Lookbooks back at CVS for $50

Ravencajun had posted about these a while ago, but I couldn't find Lookbooks in any CVS stores. Last Sunday the CVS ad featured them, but again...none to be found. Weird. This isn't exactly the back of beyond; none in all of Chicagoland? I could buy them from CVS online, but for much more money.

I called the CVS home office in RI. Two days later our local CVS manager called to say he was holding two Lookbooks for me at the $50 price. He'd evidently heard from his boss. Previously he'd just yawned and said to 'try again another time'. We picked them up yesterday afternoon.

One of the two boxes had been opened previously and had no "Quick Start Guide", but since the other one did, I got started, charging both overnight.

I have one up and running -- connected to my WiFi with the update uploaded. (BTW, it didn't want my WiFi *password*. It wanted the WEP number.)

Now I'd like to beg for some help...

How long should the battery last in use? (And, can I just leave it plugged in while I use it?) Has anyone had to replace a battery?

How do I upload books from my city library?

Where is the white-on-black setting option?

The "Dictionary" comes up and accepts a word but won't bring up the definition. ???

Thanks! I've never had an e-reader or I-Pad. I think this is amazing for $50. BTW, our lackadaisical CVS manger said he "expects to get some in stock for the back-to-school season" -- which seems to me to have already begun. If you see it *advertised* but can't find one, call the home office.

yes we are both enjoying them, it is a good additional reader for me and is my husbands first. It is so light weight compared to my PDN it is very easy to hold. I have added some books on the SD card also. For $49 for us it was a worthwhile purchase. I do not know if they will re-run that sale price or not, I told a friend about it and he found a CVS with several he bought all of them to give as Christmas gifts.

no you do not have to use wifi only if you want to get online with the unit do you need wifi. However to have wifi all you would need is to get a wireless router and plug your internet connection into it and set up your own wifi, it is not something extra you pay for, if you have internet you can have wifi. The look book can be used as an ereader with out using wifi, that is only if you wish to get books directly from the kobo book site. However I would suggest going somewhere that does have free wifi and run it because there is a major update that it has to do right off and it has to be done through wifi so you could visit someone that has a wireless router or go to a restaurant that has a wifi hotspot and do that update then thats it. The lookbook does come with a cable that you can use to move stuff from the pc to the lookbook, I am not fond of that method and much prefer the SD card that way all your books are contained on the SD card and not in the unit, should you have to do a factory reset on the unit if the books are stored on it you would lose them, I put mine on one Sd card and can use that same Sd card in any of my units. Except the sylvania it takes the micro SD card. The Sd cards are so cheap now anyway, I just picked up an 8Gig one for around $8 on sale, so many places have them on sale. And if you happen to need one of the usb plug in memory card readers those I find all the time for $6. I have 3 in packages on my desk right now price was $6 so I picked some up for friends. The kobo website has an app that you can download and install on your pc so you can use that with the lookbook also. Now on the sylvania tablet you would really want to be able to have wifi access to use all of the features on it since it is very much like a mini computer you would need to get online with it. It also comes with the cable to connect it to the usb port on your pc that is pretty standard with all of them. I had to call several CVS stores to find the ones that had these. It is hit or miss but you can talk to a manager and ask them to give you a rain check and to try to get some at that store. to keep things from getting confused we are talking about 2 different items on this thread! The lookbook which is basically just an ereader but can connect by wifi to the kobo website to download books directly from there. The sylvania 7inch touch screen android tablet which is able to connect by wifi and do much of what you can do on your pc, you can surf, email, watch videos, listen to music etc. And it has the ereader apps included along with many others, and many more you can easily install some free some you would pay for. There are numerous brands of these little android tablets out there now, most are quite similar in what they do, this one was a good deal at the sale price. I also have the Pandigital Novel which I really like too, they are very similar in what you can do with them.

I only use credit unions for my banking; I refuse to patronize commercial banks. There are never fees for using any cash machine at any credit union, not just my own. One of my credit unions has a really high interest rate (for your money being instantly available) on a balance of $12k to 15k (don't recall what it is currently - somewhere between those two amounts) but you have to make a certain number of debit transactions per month to receive the high interest. So I use my debit card at my food co-op, the small grocery store where I shop, the local coffee shop if I don't use drive through, the bird food store, etc. I have no problem reaching the threshold for transactions each month, but I never use the debit at restaurants or gas stations or larger grocery chains (which I seldom patronize anyway). I purchase all my gas at Costco (for the most part) and use their credit card. I think they rebate 5% at the end of the year. It's a nice little bonus and makes paying for membership a bargain.

I see Kobo has another e-reader with touch-screen. I suspect the Lookbook manufacturer is unloading these 'old' (2010) models via CVS.

Looking at our local library webpage, I think I can download library books, but I'll have to wait until the library opens tomorrow to get help. (Closed Sundays in summer.) I also see that the library expects to be able to download to Kindles in the near future.

Guess I'll have to learn how to get a book onto my computer, then download from the computer to the Lookbook. ???

Have to stop now. Sunday is disappearing into a 'computerized world'. lol

the lookbook is darn near the exact same thing as the sharper image Literati, same company makes them.
We LOVE ours, this was my husbands first ereader and he never puts it down now.
Yes you can read while it is plugged in.
Battery last several hours it depends on useage of course and you want to keep the wifi turned off if not using it to download because the wifi uses up the batter faster.

It does have the black with white text for night reading.
I does use epub format books so yes you can get library books with it using over drive, but I have not done that.

I generally just use the SD memory card, which I bought, and load the books that I saved to my pc right to the SD card and then put it in the lookbook and read them that way. The internal memory is a nice size but I find it much easier just to keep all my books in a folder on my pc then just move them to the SD card and that way I can use that SD card on any of my devices that use an SD card. My pandigital novel also uses SD card and epub so I move the card between the 2 and my husband and I can swap out cards too.

You can get them right to your lookbook from the kobo store, but you do have to set up your kobo account and enter that info. I have done several of their free books that way. But you will need to keep the wifi on for doing that part.

My main problem is that I am so used to using touch screen devices I keep trying to flip the pages on the screen instead of touching the button LOL

you can get good free books at www.feedbooks.com
just find one you want and select the epub format, download it to your pc (I created a new folder on my desktop for books) save it to your desired location. Then using a memory card reader (you may have one built into your pc or you may need to pick one up at walmart or somewhere they are quite cheap, stick the SD card into the reader that is plugged into the usb port of your pc and you can either just drag the book from the folder to the SD card icon or you can right click on the book and choose to copy to and then select the SD card. Once done loading up the SD card go to the bar down by your clock and find the safely remove icon and select that to safely remove your reader and card from the pc. That is it very very simple to do.

I have to go look at mine I think the night read selection is in the display section of the menu.
Also you can go to their website and find the manuals and stuff there too.

I guess that must have been last weeks flier because I just looked at the current flier on CVS and do not see them listed there. I need to call the one I picked mine up at.
I would pick up a couple more as gifts if I see that sale again.

ravencajun -- Thanks for the help. (The electronic world is a little over my head, but I keep *trying* and can usually find a way to make something work. I'm the only chance here; DH's brain doesn't work that way. He claims to have gotten the lowest possible score on a mechanical/logical abilities exam he took in college when he thought he might join ROTC. lol)

Yes, it was a week ago that the CVS ad ran here. Keep your eyes open though, as even our dullard CVS manager must be right about something, sometime! He said he expected to have some Lookbooks during back-to-school promotions. The ad did say something about "As supplies last". Have to wonder how many of these 2010 things exist. I'd buy another for our DGS (6).
