Ontario has an 8% provincial tax and a 5% GST (Goods and Service Tax) on everything but food. Then last year the 2 taxes were blended into a 13% HST. This created taxes on things that were tax-exempt before. Previously, books and children's clothing were not taxed the 5% GST. That is no longer the case.

Food in family-size is not taxable, but single-serving is.
e.g. if you buy a package of muffins, it isn't, but 1 muffin is.

We also do not pay tax on clothing, or over the counter and prescription drugs. Most necessary toiletries are exempt too - like diapers, femine products, toothpaste, etc

Hawaii has 4% tax *any time money changes hands* -- on goods and ALL services, including doctors and hospitals.

No tax on clothes. We're not supposed to pay tax on fabric, because it can be used for clothes--but that's an argument I've had many times with various stores--they don't seem to educate their employees on that one.

We don't pay tax on most food, but there is sales tax on junk food like candy, soda, chips, etc. Also we pay tax on food bought in restaurants.

How about paper goods? We pay sales tax on plastic, styrofoam or coated paper plates, but not plain paper plates--the idea is to encourage use of the plates that are more biodegradable.

Do other states have lower tax zones? We live in an urban enterprise zone--our sales tax is 3.5% here, and that tax goes back to the city. In most parts of the state, the sales tax is 7% and goes to the state.

No tax on food (except restaurants) and clothing in Massachusetts.

In CA take out food is taxed if it is hot, but cold is not. Cold drinks (at fast food places) are taxed, hot beverages, water and juices are not. There are sneaky little exceptions though. A donut (a cold food) can be taxed if it is sold as part of a package with a hot coffee (even though coffe is not normally taxed). Could it be any more confusing?

At the grocery store, junk food is taxed, as well as foods from an instore deli.

I seem to remember that all food is taxed if you buy at a convenience store (i.e., 7-11 type store).

Oregon has no sales tax, period. In a recent newspaper it was reported that Washington residents were really supporting Oregon's State Liquor stores....crossing the Columbia for the savings for that and gas. Here in So. Oregon we have many Californians shopping at Costco all of the time...same deal.

Yes, in Alabama we pay taxes on everything. Food, drugs, clothes, all are taxed at a rate of between 8% and 10% depending on which part of town you shop at.

Washington state - no tax on grocery store food items. We did pay sales tax briefly on candy, gum, and bottled water, soda, but I think that's gone away - don't really buy those things, although I do buy bottled water for DH to carry in his field vest and truthfully I haven't looked at my receipt close enough to check that, separate it from cleaning supplies, non food items :)

The one that startled me this year when my doctor moved her office to another building and the parking arrangement changed....the Seattle (or maybe it's even all of King County) tax on parking. The underground parking for her new location on the Amazon campus was cheap, $3, but by the time the various taxes had been added the $3 became $4.90 - almost $2.00 additional.

In B.C. we also have the HST (Harmonized sales tax)- combined provincial sales tax and GST which is a federal tax. Our province is going back to a split tax next year so the provincial sales tax and GST will be added separately to items. No tax on food but just about everything else.

Yes, food products are taxed in West Virginia. That's partly why we do our *big* grocery shopping across the Potomac River in Maryland, where grocery store food products aren't taxed. Same goes for gas; state taxes add about $.15 a gallon to the price, so we try to buy gas in MD., too. We live close enough that it's not hard to do.

I was surprised when I went to a local nursery and found they did not tax vegetable plants.
I never payed attention to it when I shopped at the big box stores.

Yes in Tennessee, but we don't have a state income tax.

No tax on food in Ky. Regular tax is 6 percent on clothing etc etc.

Yes, there is NOTHING in Kansas that isn't taxed.

As Hoovergal says, we do have taxes on everything in Alabama and I'm in the area where the combined tax on goods is 10%. At various times people have lobbied to have the sales tax removed from food and drugs, but to no avail.

We also have a State income tax.

However, our property taxes are ridiculously low, but still people complain about them. Obviously those people have never lived in other states. I usually feel that you reap in services what you pay in taxes.

The regressive tax situation here certainly hits those who cannot afford it the most.

Iowa taxes most everything except prescription drugs and food. The craziest thing is that you pay taxes for services such as a plumber, hair stylist, etc. Sales tax is 7%.

So many different answers. I agree, sales tax can be confusing when it comes to restaurants. And I was surprised to see that some states don't charge tax on clothing. I guess we aren't as bad off as some states, plus we don't have a state income tax. Sometimes I wish we did. We're going broke down here--according to the powers-that-be.

Wisconsin does not tax food or presciption drugs.

Here in SD we pay taxes on just about everything including groceries to make up for no state tax. In ND there is no tax on groceries but there is state tax.
