Bulldinkie, did the soup only have flour in it? No meat or veggies? Yuck! I guess sometimes you just come up with a concoction based on what's available. When I went to overnight camp we would be starving before dinner. When we sat down at the table waiting for the food to arrive (we took turns being "biddie") there would be salt, pepper, bread, butter and sugar on the table. We always had an appetizer of bread spread with butter and sugar. Makes my teeth ache to think of it, although I still like toast with cinnamon sugar, which isn't much different. I also associate the phrase "going to university" with Canadians or British. I never hear it here. I suppose it's not different from saying "going to college". On the other hand, every university has colleges but not all colleges are universities. My pet peeve is "went missing" but I think I have lost that battle as I see and hear it everywhere now, including the local news which is about as low brow as you can get. I used to have a cookbook that was put together by the people in the little town in upstate PA where my mother grew up. It seemed like every recipe called for two cans of mushroom soup and a container of Cool Whip. It was from the 1970's. I just tried to find that cookbook as well as some other really old ones and realize I tossed them on one of my occasional cleaning tears. Too bad.

I haven't made this particular recipe but it sounds just like what I can't resist...also, here's a Potato Candy recipe. Never heard of it either, so I don't know if this is what the gals are speaking of... POTATO CANDY 1/2 cup mashed potatoes powered sugar peanut butter Combine 1/2 cup mashed potatoes and power sugar till is firm enough to roll. The mixture will become very wet; just keep adding powdered sugar. roll out on powdered sugar like noodles. Cover with peanut butter. Roll into jelly roll cut into small pieces. Very rich! Enjoy! In the spirit of the All-Star game, my family has requested hot dogs. I also got Nathan's fries (frozen) since we usually only get these when we attend a game. Now if I can only manage to have soft-serve Carvel in the house it would be just like being there!

Well, I suppose working up a decent sweat if it's hot outside, and washing it down with a cold beer - yeah, that's do-able. Spam is just pork. Instead of making sausage out of the weird parts, it gets thrown in with trimmings and canned. There's a high proportion of pig's ears in it; hence the gelatin. The problem I have with it is that like most traditional canned foods, it is way too high in salt. We eat out a lot, and most cooks are much younger. Many of them salt food like there's no tomorrow. I always think, "Just wait till you turn 40 and your doctor sticks you on HCTZ." LOL! I always chuckle when I think of an old Spam radio commercial. Must have been in the early 1970's when I was still in Chicago. An interviewer did a "man on the street" series where he'd ask people what Spam was made of, and then he'd hand them a can to read the label contents. One guy when asked what Spam was made of, was really flummoxed as he'd never eaten the stuff. He said, "Ummm....I dunno, never thought about it." After he read the label (aloud), he said, "Wow, I had no idea it was just pork. I guess I thought it came from something weird - a Spaminal, or something!" Made me laugh every time I heard that one play. Bring on the Spaminals!
