If my granddaughter who lives in the Unites States was to travel to Canada, will she need a passport? vique.

Vique...if she is flying in I believe she needs one....if shes traveling by land or sea I don't think she needs one. She may be wise to have one anyway...for simple I.D. needs and verification of citizenship....

Keen, since you're already using Photobucket, just use the HTML code instead, and it will work. If you right click on the HTML code that pops up when you scroll across the photo, it should copy it, and then you can paste into your GW text box. Steve, it's been my very limited experience that melons are fickle. The same variety that does great one year, is a dud the next. Last year, we planted some Orangeglo very late, and still got two or three small to medium sized, very sweet watermelons. This year, it was planted right on time, and hasn't set fruit yet, and now the vines are dying back. Most of the melons I do get, are much smaller than the size advertised. This picture is deceiving. This Early Moonbeam Watermelon is only the size of a grapefruit. Steve, it's a yellow melon, from Seeds of Change. I'll get back to you on its flavor. Here is one of my Blacktail Mountain Watermelons. They are about the size of a grocery store Honeydew melon. It is my best producer this year, so maybe you should give it another try? This is Amish Melon, and it has maybe four, small canteloupe sized melons on it. Another first for me this year, Canoe Creek. It only has 3 fruit on it, but they are canteloupe sized, and may get a bit bigger yet. Those are all at the community garden. "Why would you need a passport to go to Hawaii? That just does not make sense." Granted, I've only been on one cruise, but it was a 7-day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. This was in 1995, when American Hawaii Cruises was still in business. They folded after 9/11 because tourism dropped off so much. The parent company, American Cruise Lines, is still in business. They do river cruises in the USA. But, I digress... There is a law that only USA-registered ships can cruise around the Hawaiian Islands unless they make at least one stop at a non-American port. So, if ships sailing under the flag of any country other than the USA want to cruise around Hawaii, they either (1) start in Vancouver, Canada, (2) do a round-trip from the US mainland, stopping in Ensenada, Mexico, going to or from the Islands, or (3) stop at the Hawaiian ports on trans-Pacific cruises. So, in those instances, you'd need a passport to go to the foreign country. Norwegian has one American-flagged ship -- the Pride of America with an American crew, which allows it to cruise the Hawaiian Islands without having to go to any foreign port.

It is very easy for thieves to scan your credit card if it is not in a protective sleeve. When Kevin and I went to Brazil, we had to change planes in Miami (never again!), and when we go to Rio, Kevin discovered that his CC info had been stolen, and someone was using it in south Florida. We don't know exactly how this happened, but we believe that it happened in the Miami airport. Kevin was unable to replace his credit card in Brazil while we were there, but mine was okay, and we were with a friend who was picking up $40,000 in cash for back rent for some property that he owns in Rio. Here's a photo of him carrying the rice bag in Ipanema that would later have the cash in it: I have no explanation for the white socks.

Has anyone ever had to go in person to get their passport?

I went to the Federal Building in person in San Francisco (next to The Civic Center) to get my first passport, but that was in 1975. I don't remember any more details than that, but I think I went back to the Federal Building when I had to have it renewed. It used to be more difficult to get a passport than it is now. I also went to the Federal Building in Los Angeles when I first had my passport renewed here. Before I went to Brazil, I had to get a visa, which cost $60 or $80 (good for 10 years), at the Brazilian Consulate in Los Angeles, and that took two months, during which time they held my passport. A couple of years later they dropped the requirement of paying for a visa, but the reason they had it was that the U.S. required payment for visas for Brazilians coming here. My current passport expires Jan 2023, and I plan to apply for a renewal two months before that, even though I do not have travel plans until next summer. I do not have a California "real" ID, and so I need my passport for any domestic travel. I never expect the government to be efficient, and that starts with the post office.

I think it's still drivers license and birth certificate..

Wa State, has added and Enhanced License, that acts sort of like a Passport for crossing NA borders.

You can basically come in to Cananda with not much documentation..it's the coming back to the US that requires more proof that you are a Citizen. :o)

Vique, call AAA, the auto club. They can tell you, or any travel agent. At this point, my understanding is that if you drive, you can re-enter the US with only your drivers license and a certified copy of your birth certificate. If you fly, you MUST have a passport. I don't know about going by boat. Last I knew, it would take ten weeks at least, to get a passport.

Land or sea crossings require just the DL and birth certificate, until June 2009.

We were just in Canada, and I can tell you, we definately needed a passport! All were held at the desk of the cruise ship we were on, and returned when we arrived back in the US.
Our travel agent told us that passports are necessary for travel to Canada.

Caryn (DD) returned last week from a week in Canada. They went in through northern Minnesota. They were asked to show their passport OR their drivers license AND their birth certificate. Both going into Canada and coming back into the US. They were driving, 2 vehicles and 8 people...all asked to show passports.

I wonder if it depends where you go into Canada at?? Sure shouldn't.

When I entered the U.S. at Port Huron, en route west, the immigration guy told me that photocopies of passports didn't cut it ... but he'd let me in this time, but don't try it again.

So - would they let me return to Canada via the U.S., from north of Minot, on the return journey?

They did - with no quibble.

So - on my return home, I looked up the original birth certificate.

Should have tried the photocopy at Detroit (just for hellery - you know me) ... but didn't.

Behaved myself.
