From our county which is a major producer of tomatoes, there used to be no problems with white flies. Winter got 'em. Then farmers started extending their tomato season (and getting more $$$ for the out of season vine ripened tomatoes) by growing their earliest tomatoes in poly houses, and along with the $$$ came some major white fly problems. Fortunately the tomato growin' is about twenty to thirty miles down wind of my roses.

Carol, Kudos to MikeâÂÂs reply relative to virus surviving in the soil. Canna viruses (virons) reside within the confined cell wall of living cells. As he suggested there are other pathogens that may survive in the soil or within the rhizome that can carry over from one year to the next. I might point out that rust is a fungus that often creates debilitating effects on canna particularly in the warmer semi tropical areas and easily carries over in the cooler months. It is not a serious problem in the more northern latitudes. Prolonged freezing conditions will kill the rust fungi. Bacterial bud rot can be a serious and often life threating issue with some of our susceptible cultivars. You can usually cut one of the older stalks near the ground line and see the center of the stalk is dark brown or black. A rhizome with bacteria bud rot will usually show the same signs and contain a thick jelly like sap. Is the canna in the photograph one of the ones that died? It appears to be quite healthy at that time? Do you happen to know the name of this cultivar? I donâÂÂt think we can determine the cause of the cannas demise but assuming there is not a soil issue (donâÂÂt rule this out) I would not hesitate to try to grow other cannas in that location. Just donâÂÂt be careless, do a trial year to see what happens with only a very few. Kent

Anyhow, HOSTA Virus X is fairly easy to spot in my experience, there are tale tell signs. Ink bleeding across leaf veins seems to be the best indicator (see pictures in my first post). Yes, environmental (cold/hot/physical damage) issues and even sporting (mutations) could throw one off thinking their plant might be infected - do your research - quarantine and watch the plant, considering testing if a prized plant, otherwise... don't take a chance, get rid of it. Nwnatural, to answer your question.... An infected hosta with HVX will languish and not perform well and some will most certainly die a very slow death. Not to mention how ugly and sickly the plant will look in comparison to a non-sick plant. Thanks for your interest! Azngrnthumbs, yes! please do speak up, whether it be The Home De-POT or Lowes, whatever nursery you happen to be browsing. Talk to the department supervisor if possible, they tend to be much more responsive. It takes a little bit of courage, but you're helping out the garden world. I've heard that Lowes has responded much better to customer complaints about HVX, they're supposed to be investigating their suppliers, much better than Home Depot response. Although, I still see many sickies at Lowes, sigh. Anyhow, awareness is the key, let the world know about this.
