Plans on Tuesday?

Morning all. What are your plans for today? I am home and trying to get some things done. I cleaned out a drawer and put all of my Jello puddings and gelatin in it. I made up a batch of the jello too. I have made a double batch of my pie dough mix and have that done. I used up ten pounds of flour. I have it stored in two great big Tupperware canisters. Now I need to get busy with the dishes. Laundry is also calling. It is another warm and humid day. Right now in central Indiana it is 84 degrees. It is very comfortable in the house. Yesterday was bad heat and had a thunderstorm move through last night. It did not keep me awake though. How are things where you are today? Hope all are doing well.

It's a lovely 64Ã¯Â¿Â½ here this morning, in north central MN. My rain barrels are full, so that is good. Think I'll bake bread (I bake it in the oven when machine is done with it.) I have a list of a gazillion things to do, but about all I get done is add some more to the list!

Clean house, clean house and clean house... Does this tell you what I am going to be doing?? We have had so much company and things are a mess. More coming in over the weekend so I have only 3 days to get things caught up again.

Estelle and Annette - Happy Spring back at ya! Annette - In the boating world, they talk of a condition called two-foot disease. "If my boat was only two feet longer, it would be perfect." Greenhousers probably get it too. Thanks, MeMo, the bags are heat sinks. There are two 5 gallon buckets of water inside each one. I was going to spray paint the buckets black, but Nell suggested wrapping them in garbage bags, since I was afraid the black paint wouldn't stick to the plastic buckets. I don't know if 100 gallons of water is enough to do the job, but I am going to stick a max/min thermometer out there tonight and start monitoring temps. I'm not planning on trying to use the soil inside the greenhouse to grow anything, as there is grass growing there and when I move the greenhouse in the summer, I don't want to step out of my basement door into a garden. :-) I think that there will be a hoop house in my future, depending on how I do with flower sales this year. OK, Patti. Let's get those seeds started! Terryanne, I see that you're in zone 5 too, and I hear you about heating expense. I'm just using my greenhouse, along with lights in my basement, as a plant starting area in the spring. My grandsons do love to go out there and play with their toy tractors in the dirt on a sunny day in the winter. I probably won't do any more than use an electric heater at night if I have to. Hi mutantplantlover - I'm wondering if you might be confusing stratification with scarification (?) Morning glories are not just tropical but inhabit USDA zones 3 to the hottest portions of the world. The thick seedcoats on some of the many species helps the embryo to retain enough moisture to stay alive for extended periods of drought,withstand being eaten by certain herbivorous animals / insects , enables the seeds to float via labyrinths to facilitate wider dispersion and other reasons that may help survival that may or may not be related to the temperature zone... The practice of chipping the seedcoat allows water to gain access to the embryo which will start the germination process unlerss the seed is dead or if there are dormancy related factors involved such as particular temperatures , mineral content of the water etc... The seeds with intact seedcoats need to see a certain 'amount' of water in the wild otherwise they might sprout prematurely at a light rain, instead of when the ground has been soaked enough to sustain a full grown plant as during a rainy season... There are so many urban myths regarding various MG's that it's virtually impossible to keep up and try dispelling them all...the biggest MYTHS are related to fertilizer and transplanting... There are many different types of 'fertilizer' and because of that the word fertilizer is a fuzzy term that does per se indicate the specific NPK ration or content of other seco0ndary nutrients and trace minerals... MG's will benefit from a phosphorus containing bloom booster since it is high nitrogen which may inhibit flowering. MG's can be easily transplanted at any time in their life cycle (as from experience I've been routinely transplanting various species for most of my life on this planet) by making sure the plants are well watered for several days before transplanting , during transplanting and gradually acclimating transplants into full sun while keeping them well watered... I can only surmise that those who claim that MG's cannot be transplanted are not following the guidelines I mentioned above , which should be 'second nature' to most gardeners with experience in transplanting... Like Ruthie G, I have been through Cancer twice. And I know that just the word is scary. So just know that you have a lot of prayers coming your way and some good information,so please try and relax.I know it is easier said than done, but tomorrow you will be able to look for a doctor and know that you can be helped.

Oh, poor Susie. That's a lot of company. Aren't you worn out?

It's been sunny all morning here but expect rain later this afternoon. Temp. supposed to be 93, but I was out earlier and there was a nice breeze.

We had a guy come out this morning and fix our pantry door. It mysteriously fell off. Harry isn't able to do that stuff any more. I did look at it and try to figure out how to fix it, but it was beyond me. When the man came, he couldn't figure it out either until I got the bright idea of switching from left opening to right opening. He did that (with a lot of switching stuff) so now my pantry has a door on again. One thing you DON'T want showing is your pantry...or at least I don't. He only charged $20, but I gave him $25.

Then another guy came to give us an estimate on pressure cleaning our house and gutters. He did it for us 3 years ago and did a great job. We live in an end unit so we have more to do, but he's only charging $65, which I thought is more than reasonable.

So other than that, I've just showered, read the papers and did the puzzles, made the bed, emptied the dishwasher and did my daily round picking up and putting stuff where it belongs. Harry never seems to remember where he got stuff!

Sue, your pie dough recipe must be like my mother's. It starts out with 6 cups of flour (for 1 batch). It's enough to make 2 two-crust pies and 1 one-crust pie. :-)

Patti my recipe takes a five pound bag of flour, that is at least 16 cups. I made two batches.

How many pies will you get out of that, Sue? Did you freeze it? I have enough dough left from the last I made for one more 2-crust pie, or two quiches. Which may be dinner tomorrow night!

Mostly, I just buy the ready-made crust. :0

Patti, each recipe makes, according to the recipe, 24 single pies, double pies would be 12. I do not freeze it but put it on the shelf as there is nothing in the dry mix to go bad by the time I will use it up. I measure out what I want to use and add the liquid to it and then either bake it or freeze that. I did not make any pies today. I might make one for the weekend.
