If it's what a suspect, a European starling, you can toss it in the garbage and help save the lives of many native birds.

If it isn't a starling, or you can't toss it, you'll have to leave the door or a window open. Eggs will not hatch without incubation and chicks have to feed constantly.

Could you email a photo of the nest to me?

Here's some info from the PMCA...where they reference Purple Martins you can add all other native cavity nesters such as blue birds, woodpeckers, flickers, tree swallows, chickadees, nuthatches, and many more native birds that are endangered by the EUST.

Starlings and House Sparrows will take over compartments, destroy eggs, kill nestlings, and prevent martins (and all other native cavity nesters) from nesting. Starlings and House Sparrows are not protected (since they are not native birds) and may be controlled by trapping, shooting, and nest tear-outs. While the eggs are a similar color, wren eggs and nests are very small. The nests are made of twigs and sticks with only a small lining of feathers, soft fuzz, and white spider coccoons. This nest is a starling nest.

If I could get my little gal to cooperate, I'd get a picture of the wren nest I have in the front yard. She claimed the bluebird box set up 35 feet from the martin pole.

I don't usually post here, but another GW member sent me this way to take a look. It appears you have a Carolina Wren nest. (Not a House Wren who makes a nest of sticks in a birdhouse, and not a starling nest.) Carolinas are famous for building in garages, workshops, sheds, shoes, flower pots, and even clothespin baskets hanging on a line. They can sneak UNDER your garage door if there is a crack of about an inch or a little less. She must be coming and going without you knowing. The babies will hatch about 2 weeks from whenever the last of these eggs were laid, and then they will leave the nest about two weeks and a few days from their hatch time. Technically, it is illegal to remove the nest or eggs of a native bird. Here is a link that explains a little more:

Well I don't want to run off my Martins, Blue Birds, Hummers, Cardinals and what few Woodpeckers I have. The Starling isn't welcome here from what I have read on them.

Starling eggs are BLUE and the same size as a robin's egg. The Carolina Wrens are no threat whatsoever to either of the birds you mentioned -- starlings are, however. Hope that helps!

And Carolina Wrens are protected, native birds and need to be encouraged. However, don't they make smaller nests? Do you live in their nesting range?

I have seen pale and spotted starling eggs.

You could call a local birding club or orinthlogist. It's hard to make a decision from just a photo. An expert, on site, could tell you in a flash.
