Great News - Great Retreval........

Our sweet daughter-in-law has had a difficult time getting pregnant. She went throught the invitro process 4 years ago and had a beautiful baby girl. They have been trying for a couple years again with no luck. Well, she went through retreval last Monday and it was a good one. She has 10 good prospects. They will keep an eye on them until Saturday and they will implant 2. Within two weeks we will know if she is pregnant or not. We are all keeping the prayers going.

Until they had to go through all of this I had no idea what was involved. There is tons. So many shots, office visits, tests, and tons of money. The insurance does not cover any of it. By the time they are through it is between $15,000 and $20,000. Monday's visit was $8,000. Her daily shots are $700.00 a piece. This gal goes through so much just to have a baby. I admire her so much. If this does not work it will be the end for them.

We help with the 4 year old all we can. She is such a doll.

Loves to come to grandmas and grandpas. She will love having a brother or sister. They are wonderful parents, too. We are all so grateful that they were able to have her.

I certainly know first hand what she's going through. A retrieval of 10 eggs is good. And the fact that they're going for a day 5 transfer is good too; means her embryos are looking good otherwise they'd transfer them tomorrow (day 3).

Unfortunately, most insurances don't cover IVF (mine certainly didn't) and the cycles, as you mentioned, aren't cheap.

I wish her the best of luck and hope she's done okay with all the meds, some of them can be pretty hard on the body physically and mentally. Keep us posted, I'll be wondering how she did.

"Grandma might have been thinking this way." (Digit) Digit, I think that you may have hit on something here. We grow vegetables primarily for leisure. The vegetables we produce are not essential to our survival, so we place undue emphasis on aesthetic qualities such as appearance... and we grow fewer of them. Our ancestors, on the other hand, had a much closer relationship with the vegetables that they grew... no vegetables = no food. With survival at stake, they would have learned many techniques to grow and preserve their vegetables... and to save seed successfully. Their plantings were large scale, with greater emphasis on productivity - the precursor to modern agriculture. However, they may not have segregated their varieties to the extent that we do today. After all, they were less concerned about the shape & color (and even flavor) of what they grew, than they were of the other traits - earliness, drought hardiness, yield, resistance to disease, and storage life / ease of preservation. They might have only grown one "tried and true" variety of many vegetables, or they might have grown a mixture (with or without segregation). A great deal of amateur breeding took place, gradually incorporating desired traits into family lines... hence, heirlooms. As experienced farmers, they would have selected for seed the plants that possessed the traits they desired; so they were keen observers, who knew what to watch for. That knowledge would have been passed down, along with other survival lore such as hunting & trapping, animal husbandry, tanning, drying meat, etc. Sadly, with the dawning of the industrial age, that unbroken line of knowledge was severed. We may have a world of information at our collective fingertips... but for the population at large, much of the knowledge of self-sufficiency is now beyond reach, forgotten. We are the weaker for it, were our technology to ever fail us.

Not sure of the value of posting to an 8 year old thread. But before doing any online plant ordering, it is wise to check out the vendor. Gurney's gets terrible ratings from the Garden Watchdog, a mail order/online nursery customer review clearinghouse.....more negative reviews than positives (poor plant quality, dead plants, mislabeling, bad/nonexistant customer service). With fruit trees in particular, it is important to know which types of fruits and which varieties of those fruits will do well in your climate. And typically that information is best obtained from local suppliers or growers. Or your county extension service.

Get good color on A. Hubrictii here. Mine tends to flop so I have to stake it a bit. If it didn't get color in fall, I would shovel prune it. It's one of the main reasons I planted it and does look rather weedy. Tried RBIAT again from seed this year. Actually did get one to live and planted it. It is about 2 little stems and it's totally lost in the garden. Blooming and very pretty if I crawl on the ground to find it! My blue chip BB always blooms much later and for a long time. Eclectic, do you see any buds? It actually seems even later this year.

Congratulations. He's precious and his big brother looks so proud. Wyatt is going to be a great big brother to "little" Wade. Grandson was over 10 and 1/2 pounds at birth. He was popping out of the 6 month old gowns within 3 weeks and only wore 3 month sized clothes for the first two weeks. LOL It was kind of sad that we missed him in the layette type items and then all the My First holiday clothes end at nine months size so we only got one holiday.

It is exciting, and I always really love hearing peoples stories...especially the success ones, obviously.

And IVF is so fresh in my mind right now since I just did it a couple months ago, I really know how she's feeling right now. She's nervous and excited all at the same time!

Doctor's office called today and we still have 8 good strong eggs. The last time we just had two. They are stll scheduled for Saturday implant.. YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!! So far she has done well with the meds. She doesn't like taking them but she knows she has to. She is a real trooper with all of it.

Eight out of 15 is good. Typically you lose about half so hopefully she'll have some to freeze too! Good Luck!!

Congratulations all around. I'm so sorry insurance won't cover many of the costs of IVF. That sucks! I'll be praying for her.

Things went great this morning. They used 3 eggs and froze 4. We have never had enough to freeze before. She has to stay down for 48 houres and then still take it easy after that.. They will do a pregnancy test in 2 weeks. she is such a sweetheart and a wonderful mom to our 4 year old grandaughter. Our son takes extra good care of mom and Rachael, too. He is so helpful in all ways. Such a loving man... Susie

There must be a lot of this going on in the KT forum:) My sis had a retreval of 33 eggs and the fertilized 22 of them. 6 are frozen and 2 will be implanted tomorrow and 15 of them are still growing and will be frozen and saved for the next time around. So they will be waiting the same 2 weeks to find out if everything took.
