Water Buffalo at Djuma

I don't know if this is the actual migration or not, but we are seeing hundreds of Water Buffalo now.

I think I have a rational way to get close to the optimum schedule for this stuff. It depends on your having access to the recommended watering schedules for Bermuda grass in your area and making some corrections to the schedule. You want to apply about 1/2 of the monthly water needs of Bermuda, split into 2 or 3 waterings during that month. So far it's looking green and dense. Where are you located? That would help in coming up with an approach to getting the buffalo grass to take over. If I remember correctly, you should be able to keep buffalo grass green with 1/2 inch to 1 inch of water every other week. The bluegrass needs about an inch of water a week to stay green. It will stay alive if you water an inch every other week, but it will be dormant, so the buffalo grass should be able to spread. Once the buffalo grass goes dormant (completely dormant, not at all green) you can use roundup to kill any bluegrass that perks up with fall and winter precipitation.

I grow Tatanka as a front lawn, and my neighbor grows Cody. Tatanka seems to fill in better and is more chinch bug resistant than Cody, but Tatanka is no longer available commercially. I find the color pretty good, especially when fertilized, and I don't water it except like recently when we've had over a month of 100 degree temps and no rain at all (you don't have to water it for survival, it'll go dormant and then come back). It makes the softest carpet around when it gets established; my kids talk about coming home to walk barefoot in the grass. Be aware, though that a buffalograss lawn is not "no-maintainence. It's easier than bluegrass and will fill in the bare patches, but you do need to spray or burn occasionally to keep it weed free. Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Musings

I am totally hooked on Djuma. They have a live safari every morning and evening (it starts in California at 7:30am) and the guides and camera men are awesome!! Wild Earth produces it and I can't say enough what a great job they do.

By the way Rexon (the guide today) estimated that there were 2,500 HUNDRED water buffalo this morning!! Then they came across a beautiful leapord sleeping in a tree. Unbelievable!

I missed Rex saying that. Sometimes I don't catch what he or Pieter are saying. They are both awesome at spotting something in the distance. And I have to chuckle when Pieter is doing one of his imitation calls.

I saw the leopard in the tree. Made my back hurt the way he was hanging on head down.

I am totally hooked on this site. I keep a game of Bookworm going along the side if things get slow while I'm watching. Multitasking!
