If that makes you feel better you should do it. Just make sure you use something that won't bleed through the new carpet.

Not saying you shouldn't do it--but just wondering how you would feel, if--some years from now--you were in your new place, and ripped something out, and found evidence that someone had died there, on that spot?

That bothers some people, some are okay with it. My point is, that if there's any chance the people living in your house could be hurt or scared by that--then maybe it's not a good idea?

I'm pretty sure our seller's mom may have died in our 'new' living room. Haven't asked the question, and I won't--it's really none of my business. Doesn't bother me one way or the other--even if I knew that were the case, it wouldn't keep me from buying or enjoying my new home. But I'm sure you know people (we all do) who are totally creeped out by death. I just wouldn't want your nice gesture of remembrance to turn into someone else's nightmare.

Again--I understand your point, and think it would be a lovely remembrance. I'm just trying to look at the other side of this, as well.

Absolutely w/o question, do it! I personally think it's a wonderful sentiment and not at all morbid. I still remember the spot my mother died. I asked my sister (who now lives in that house) if she ever thinks about it and she said no. I think it's a beautiful thing to do.

My DFIL passed away in the house we live in now...It was a sitting room, turned into bedroom right off the kitchen...Now I use it for my dining room and really don't even think about it....

I think it's a good idea, too. If someone finds it, they wouldn't know he died there. Only you would know what it means.

Do it if you want to but I'd rather have some kind of memorial that indicated that he LIVED here.

If I bought a home that had been previously owned and removed the carpet in the living area and discovered a heart with a name I might think that someone had proposed on that spot or that a girl had written the name of her sweetheart.

I don't think it would occur to me that that it marked the spot of a really sad event or if it did I would quickly dismiss the thought. I think it depends on an individual's outlook - I tend to be very optimistic.

No one will know what it meant. Do it for sure!!! Or maybe you should do both your initials in a heart with the plus sign--you know what I mean. I think it's a meaningful gesture for you, and if I took up my carpets and found something like that, I would think it charming.

I would do it. I know for a fact that at least one person died in my home and it does not bother me in the least. A heart with a name could mean any number of things! If it comforts you, then go for it.

I think that's one terrific idea!

Very, very few people have ever hesitated to buy a really old house for reasons such at that. Most of the beautiful old homes, restored and treasured, would have been lost to demolition long ago- people died at home surrounded by loved ones- it was the most natural thing in the world back when. And I hope to do the same.

Well, Monica, if it's silly/morbid, I must be those two things, too!! I say do it. I agree - I'm an optimistic person. If I found a heart painted on a floor I'd just think that somebody was loved very much. (And that's true in this case.)

When we put down new carpet in the LR/DR, we had the kids write their name on the wood. We also had written when the house was built. We did the same thing when we added on the family room. It isn't going to show, but there is a record there. People can add to it, or just ignore it.

Socks...I love your idea. Both initials, it will be.

Azzalea...the house is finally going up for sale next month. I'm certainly not mentioning my little memorial.

I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but when we moved from our little mountain house to our current house I wrote my kids names in a secret place in their bedroom. I was a bit heartbroken to be moving from the home I brought my babies home to. So In a hidden place in their room I left their names and the dates we lived there. I felt better knowing a piece of them would be there as long as the house was. They felt better about it too. It's our little secret.

Also, along the same lines as Danihoney, whenever my hubby does work around the house, he always puts our names somewhere in the work. He has a big heart with "Joe loves Rita" in it behind the new shower wall, he's engraved our initials in the rafters of the attic....lots of stuff like that. Can't wait to see what he does to the concrete floors when we rip up the carpet to get new wood floors!!

When my Dad passed away DH took the name plate from under the doorbell and had it engraved with the dates Dad lived in the house. We put it in the basement attached to the floor joist. I wonder if the new owners have found it yet?
