You betcha!!!

Mine doesn't bother me in bed.....in fact I often go to bed to relieve the tingles. My legs start bothering me anytime from dinnertime on. I rub my feet against the carpet steadily. DH swears there's holes in the carpet.

I've tried vitamin E, doesn't work, and the doctor prescribed some medication used for Parkinson's. It worked immediately the first time, but the second renewal, it made no difference at all.

I've also tried soaking my feet in Tonic Water. I've heard that's a remedy. It seems to work for a bit, then I've heard that we shouldn't have that absorbed through our skin.

It's a shortness of potassium in our system, so I should eat more bananas and drink orange juice to see if it helps.

DH has it and takes Requip for it (prescription medicine). He says it helps (and he is one who hates medicine, and usually claims that nothing works), so your DH might want to ask his doctor about it.

I do and I know what your hubby is going through, it's terrible....I remember years ago, before my mother passed, she would always want someone to rub her legs and now I know why.....
I have found, taking a very hot bath before bedtime, seems to help but not always....I even found myself, using a heat massager on my legs during the night...My doctor did give me a RX but it made me so sick, dizzy etc., I couldn't take it....I'd love to get something to just let me get a good night's sleep......

More magnesium. Girl friend had it while pregnant. That's what her dr. told her to do.

You might want to do a search on magnesium for this problem. It has helped me.

For many years, Evening Primrose Oil (in capsules)was a wonderful form of relief for the tingling and itching and restlessness of my legs.

It's awful. Fortunately, though, mine normally only bothers me when I'm very tired. If I can keep a good sleep schedule I'm ok.

I'll urge DH to call his MD and get these blood tests: CBC panel, Serum ferritin, RBC, Magnesium and Vitamin B-12.

The medical website I found by googling RLS also mentioned that some people are missing a vital enzyme called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Symptoms are RLS, high homocystine levels, heart disease and depression. (DH has two of these.) Medication for these people is Folinic acid.

Thanks to jasdip's contribution, plus what I've read onine, I think DH's RLS is genetic. He's always shuffled his feet while sitting and watching TV and has wanted an aisle seat at the theater or ball park -- so he could 'stretch his legs'. He's had an idiopathic tremor since he was 50. Now, as a Senior, his legs kick of their own volition when he goes to bed: RLS or PLMD (Periodic Leg Movement Disorder).

MAYBE...his conditions are all related to a deficiency. And maybe...there's a 'fix'!

oh yes I have it and it really drives me crazy. I buy some little pills at CVS that do work on them, the ones I buy say for leg cramps but they do help my restless leg

drinking tonic water does help some since it contains a little quinine and quinine does help, that is what they used to prescribe for it.

Of course you can try putting the bar of soap between the fitted sheet and the mattress tons of people swear by it. I keep one in my bed it can't hurt and it makes the bed smell nice, put it in a stocking sock. Try googling it you will be amazed at the number of positive responses.

I have to admit after having one there for several months now I have not had nearly as many attacks at night as I was having, no idea if it is the soap though.

I've had it for years, don't take meds for it. I just rub my feet together, kick them around, kick off the blankets, rub my feet some more, and eventually it stops.

My restless leg syndrome started when I was on complete bed rest during the last 6 weeks of my twin pregnancy. I was fine all day until I got sleepy :( It is miserable.

I do not take prescription meds, but have been quite successful recently by being more pro-active in regards to taking calcium and magnesium right after dinner. It seems as if I prevent myself from having the symptoms start up, I'm much better off! I use Restless Legs by Hyland's when needed, and they do work.

I had it when I was anemic. Once my hemoglobin/ferritin levels were back to normal, no more restless legs.

I get uncontrollable twitching in my legs during dialysis. not sure if it's the actual dialysis treatment or lying on my back in the chair unable to move my legs/walk around for three hours. My doctor prescribed Clonopin, which has "bonus" of making me sleepy so I doze off. Clonopin is similar to Valium, and is highly addictive. I've heard of sleeping with a bar of soap under your mattress.

Chisue, I encourage you to make sure he follows up with his doctor. My mom suffered with it and because she thought the mesd were too expensive she did not take them as rx'd and she ordered them online. She ran out and did not take them for 2 weeks prior to her death, I blame this (in part) for her death. Please, make sure he follows thru.

I can eat bananas till they are coming out my ears but it doesn't help my legs when they are restless. Nothing helps but to go to bed.

I get it at dialysis and you cant get up if it kept up it would drive you nuts.

As I've written before, there are three Parkinson's drugs that are prescribed for rls: sinemet, mirapex and requip. The first two have worked for my mom over the many, many years she has suffered from this, but now she must combine them with oxycodone to get any relief. But at 90, we're not too worried about addiction. If she doesn't take the meds as soon as her legs start bugging her, it takes a long time to get the movement under control. It seems people with rls are thought to not metabolize iron correctly, but they haven't yet figured out how to do that. There is a newsletter a few times a year called "NightWalkers" that you might want to access. This is a well-known condition that still has researchers stumped and affects many people, especially as they age. I noticed recently that when I used a heating pad on my back after working in the garden the last few times, my legs were bothering me; I've never had the problem before. I must remember to ask my mom to try a cold pack on her lower back when the meds aren't working well! I hope your dh doesn't feel reluctant to try the meds if rls is keeping him awake.

My dialysis doctor prescribed Clonopin for me, but there's also something called "Neurontin".

Can you buy the Hylands Restful Legs at a pharmacy or only on line?

Jannie I was taking that too did you read side effects you can have uncontrolable seizures that may not stop Ill have restless legs..

Sunny, I usually use an online place to buy my Hyland's products, but when I did a google search, it showed they're available at some Walgreens. The site I visited had a place where I could put in my zip code to find a store near me that sells them. You might want to try that.

I actually purchase my Hylands Restful Legs at Walmart. They are on the bottom shelf...look for the red box! I don't use the leg cramp ones as they do not seem effective for my restless leg syndrome symptoms!

I have used the Hylands restful leg and their one for leg cramps that I linked to above I get all of them at my local CVS store, now I have much better luck using their leg cramps pills than I do with the restful leg pills for my restless leg. I got very little relief from their restful leg pills so since they are pretty cheap you might want to get both and try to see which works best. Just click on the link in my above post to see what they look like.
I think the reason is that the cramps one actually contains a small amount of quinine which is very helpful for these conditions.

ravencajun...that is quite interesting! I bought a box of their leg cramp pills by mistake once. The next time I'm having a difficult time getting my legs to settle down, I'll try those!

DH's MD has agreed to do the additional blood tests at DH's next physical. The leg-kicking symptoms have abated as DH went back on a minimal dose of Abilify. This is the third time he's developed the leg movement at night three weeks after stopping Abilify. His MD would like to get him off the Abilify, mostly because it is a drug with a short track record, but so far...stopping it only causes problems.

Eighteen months ago DH had what we came to find out was a serious panic attack. After some experimentation with other drugs, he was put on Cymbalta. That helped with the mood disorder, but not as much as Cymbalta (40 mg) plus Abilify (1 mg). Either the Abilify also helps with the leg problem or stopping it *creates* the leg problem! Who knows?

DH had the leg problem several years ago when he was taking statins for cholesterol. Since he was only borderline-high cholesterol, his MD agreed to stop the statins. The leg problem ceased...until returning last year after the panic attack and drugs for that.

I'd LOVE to find that all or some of this could be traced back to a simple vitamin or mineral deficiency. It's been a roller-coaster ride!

The only thing that helps me is a good swig of Nyquil. Puts me to sleep and i don't notice my leg when it wants to "run the 440" at night.
