Magic Erasers saved us from painting

I have been using Magic Erasers for years but I had forgotten how wonderful they are for cleaning scuff marks off of walls. I bought a package of 2 erasers to see if I could clean some of the walls of the parsonage and save us from having to do so much painting. The other members of the cleaning and painting team were amazed at how nice the walls looked after I finished.

I think I first heard after Magic Erasers here at the KT about 10 years ago.

Yeah, I should have posted the Snopes article link also in my first post. The site has posted the generated response that P&G sends out to the consumers who inquire about the saftey of the product. It does not address the issue of outgassing. They sort of walk around the whole issue. That makes me very suspicious. They keep emphasizing that the product does not *contain* formaldehyde but do not say anything to assure the consumer that the products does not *degrade* into it's componants or into something entirely different. I'm sure everyone can remember from chemistry class how the addition of something simple like *water* to a simple compound can create something, or maybe two or three things, that are entirely different. Formaldehyde itself is produced by a catalytic oxidation. Even the addition of *heat* to a compound can change it - even heat from friction. So can sunlight...... If I leave my Magic Sponge on the window sill above the sink, is the sunlight going to cause it to release gases. There is not a lot of info out there on formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer so I absolutly do not know anything _for sure_ about it. BUT, I do not trust the Big Corporations "announcments" about the saftey of their products. We have all been fooled in the past. Being an 'oldster' I remember how back in the 50's - 60's we were being told that cigarette smoking was COMPLETELY HARMLESS. Cigarette companies even got medical doctors to appear in their commercials to endose their product and dispell the "myth" about the damgers of cigarette smoking. One company even developed 'harmless' *asbestos* cigarette filters. I just am not going to take P&G's "word for it" about a product that is making them tens of MILLIONS of dollars per year. I want to see Snopes publish something from another source other than that of the maufacturer of the product.

Tina, what company do you use? We have Terminix for both termite and pest control. They generally do the outside spraying and inside only when asked. I ask. lol. It was on our news last week that Oklahoma has a massive amount of BW's and fiddlebacks due to the heat, it's worse than usual. They can craw in the tiniest crack under a door, it's awful. Found a new use for the magic eraser! Yesterday I hand washed the porcelain tile in the utility room where the pets are fed (today is the kitchen), and of course they make huge messes with water mixing with dust. On the cream colored tile there were a few spots that wouldn't come up very good, along with dirt in the grout. The eraser did wonders, especially for the grout! I only had to do a few tiles with the eraser, and since there is no shine on the tile, I didn't worry about removing anything.

My dining room set is an old one,like from the 70's,and when i first got it i used to polish it everyweek with furniture polish.So over time the arms and backs of the chairs became very sticky from the polish residue.One day i was cleaning something else and i thought i'd try to clean one of the chairs.It took that sticky residue right off.I think it also may have taken of a little of the finish,but no biggie.One of these days i'm going to do all the chairs and then just give them a fresh coat of stain if need be and a finish. By the way,i also learned my lesson along the way to not use furniture polish.I just use lemon oil now,or the pledge furniture oil. Kathi

Shelly, I believe "conversion varnish finish" means that a special process that may include a catalyst is used to make the finish. I believe this is not something that can be done at home. I think it must involve some serious solvents, and this is why it is not available in California, with their stricter air quality laws. How does this affect you? Not sure, but at least I gave you something else to read while you are waiting for an answer. If you want to learn more, try a wikipedia search on "conversion varnish." Generally, not all finishes adhere to all other finishes. Be sure to research before you try any repair.

I don't know how we ever managed without them. If they had been around when my son was little, I wouldn't have had to repaint our home every 2 years!

When combined with "Awesome" cleaner, I can get just about anything clean.

I'm so glad they invented these before I had children! I don't even panic when I see Dan running around the house with a crayon. I know I'll be able to 'erase' just about anything he does. Heck, I've erased Sharpie marks off of several surfaces with those things.

They are great for scrubbing leather shoes, leather upholstry in the car/boat, my white doors, appliances - impossible to do without. Question is, what IS it?

The microfine structure of melamine foam, creating very hard, tiny fibres which scour some surfaces clean.Melamine foam is a foam-like material consisting of a formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer.

The foam is manufactured in Germany by BASF under the name "Basotect". It has been used for over 20 years as insulation for pipes and ductwork, and has a long history as a soundproofing material for studios, sounds stages, auditoriums, and the like. In the early 21st century it was discovered that melamine foam was an effective abrasive cleaner. The open cell foam is microporous and its polymeric substance is extremely hard, so that when used for cleaning it works like extremely fine sandpaper, getting into tiny grooves and pits in the object being cleaned. On a larger scale the material feels soft. Because the bubbles interconnect, its structure is more like a maze of fibreglass strands than like the array of separate bubbles in, for example, styrofoam.

Rubbing with slightly moistened foam may remove otherwise "uncleanable" external markings from surfaces. For example, it can remove crayon, magic marker, and grease from painted walls, wood finishings, plastic-adhering paints from treated wooden tables, adhesive residue, and grime from hub caps[citation needed]. The surface being cleaned may be finely scratched if not hard. The foam wears away, rather like a pencil eraser, and leaves a slight residue behind which can be rinsed away.

We did a facelift in our kitchen, saving us thousands of dollard, due to Magic Erasers! I love my kitchen cupboards but they were looking every bit of their 24 years old. We had to do something so I figured there was nothing to lose. I scrubbed them down with Magic Erasers, rinsed them with whited vinegar water and then used paste wax on them. Even my cleaning lady thought we had bought new cupboards.

What other things does it clean? I've had a package here for years and only used it a couple of times. The kids are grown so no need to do the walls. lol

I had some old plastric Barbie toy furniture pieces from childood that had a yellow dirty film on them. Cleaned them with my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, sold on Ebay for a nice amount.

Malexia, the walls we cleaned were all flat paint. Since they worked so well, we used them in an apartment we thought had to be painted. They saved us 2 paint jobs.

My experience has been that a magic eraser burnishes wall paint, so that when you look from the side, the cleaned area has a different appearance.

Even without the ministrations of "Magic Eraser" ...

... when you look at people from the side ...

... they look different, too.

(Dogs, too, though they'd probably have a "hairy" if you tried using "Magic Eraser" on them!).

Would they work as a cheap, home-made exfoliation procedure, do you figure? Much less costly than a spa!
