Magic Erasers saved us from painting

I have been using Magic Erasers for years but I had forgotten how wonderful they are for cleaning scuff marks off of walls. I bought a package of 2 erasers to see if I could clean some of the walls of the parsonage and save us from having to do so much painting. The other members of the cleaning and painting team were amazed at how nice the walls looked after I finished.

I think I first heard after Magic Erasers here at the KT about 10 years ago.

Magic Erasers would be a very expensive way to clean windows, because they tend to break apart when wet, and I would be cautious it may etch the glass or damage any protective UV coating due to the Melamine foam. " ...when melamine resin cures into foam, its microstructure becomes almost as hard as glass causing it to act like a SUPER-fine sandpaper on stains." Instead, try a bucket with a gallon of warm water and add a couple tablespoons of cornstarch and a few drops of Dawn dish detergent. Use a professional-grade sponge/squeegee. Wet the windows well with the sponge side, then remove it with the squeegee side. Use a cloth rag to catch any drips. The cornstarch/water solution actually has a slight sheeting action so it repels rain for a short period of time after it's applied. I learned this method from a professional window washer. -Grainlady

Yeah, I should have posted the Snopes article link also in my first post. The site has posted the generated response that P&G sends out to the consumers who inquire about the saftey of the product. It does not address the issue of outgassing. They sort of walk around the whole issue. That makes me very suspicious. They keep emphasizing that the product does not *contain* formaldehyde but do not say anything to assure the consumer that the products does not *degrade* into it's componants or into something entirely different. I'm sure everyone can remember from chemistry class how the addition of something simple like *water* to a simple compound can create something, or maybe two or three things, that are entirely different. Formaldehyde itself is produced by a catalytic oxidation. Even the addition of *heat* to a compound can change it - even heat from friction. So can sunlight...... If I leave my Magic Sponge on the window sill above the sink, is the sunlight going to cause it to release gases. There is not a lot of info out there on formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer so I absolutly do not know anything _for sure_ about it. BUT, I do not trust the Big Corporations "announcments" about the saftey of their products. We have all been fooled in the past. Being an 'oldster' I remember how back in the 50's - 60's we were being told that cigarette smoking was COMPLETELY HARMLESS. Cigarette companies even got medical doctors to appear in their commercials to endose their product and dispell the "myth" about the damgers of cigarette smoking. One company even developed 'harmless' *asbestos* cigarette filters. I just am not going to take P&G's "word for it" about a product that is making them tens of MILLIONS of dollars per year. I want to see Snopes publish something from another source other than that of the maufacturer of the product.

Cleaning grime and soot from porcelain tile - Magic Eraser

UPDATE In my earlier post I was disappointed that the grout seemed to be darkened by the cleaning. I was just impatient and did not wait for the grout to dry. It appears the grout cleaned right along with the tile. To clean the rest of the floor, the smoke cleaners used the Mr Clean Magic Eraser mop version. They could not find the Quick Eraser brand at any of the Dollar Trees near my house. I had to go back across town to the one I found them at to get the mop version. It is called ScrubIT Color Sweep on one side of the packaging and Quick Eraser on the other side. It took about 2 hours of very light mopping to clean 300 square feet. The sponge did not look worn out when she was finished, either.

Magic erasers on windows?

Sorry about the delay. In respose to Premier, I did use a scraper first but they leave a stain which is amazingly resilient. The Magic erasers worked great on the siding but was worried about dulling or scratching the glass. In response to Meg. Google Artillery fungus or Shotgun fungus and you'll get a host of info.. It's relatively new and is found in landscaping mulches around the house. It prefers shady moist areas and unfortunately when the temperatures are right eg. low 60's, It shoots its spores up to 20' and generally towards bright shiny objects like windows and bright siding.. Weird I know but thats what I read. Apparently its a big problem in Mi,Oh,Pa. Supposedly the problem can be reduced by adding new mulch every year so that the decomposed stuff gets buried.. I removed all of mine in that area and put in fresh Pine nuggets which are not as likely to cause it. Some Homeowners have actually had to completely re-side their homes because it is that stubborn.. It will also blast light colored cars..

I don't know how we ever managed without them. If they had been around when my son was little, I wouldn't have had to repaint our home every 2 years!

When combined with "Awesome" cleaner, I can get just about anything clean.

I'm so glad they invented these before I had children! I don't even panic when I see Dan running around the house with a crayon. I know I'll be able to 'erase' just about anything he does. Heck, I've erased Sharpie marks off of several surfaces with those things.

They are great for scrubbing leather shoes, leather upholstry in the car/boat, my white doors, appliances - impossible to do without. Question is, what IS it?

From Wikipedia:

Melamine foam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The microfine structure of melamine foam, creating very hard, tiny fibres which scour some surfaces clean.Melamine foam is a foam-like material consisting of a formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer.

The foam is manufactured in Germany by BASF under the name "Basotect". It has been used for over 20 years as insulation for pipes and ductwork, and has a long history as a soundproofing material for studios, sounds stages, auditoriums, and the like. The low smoke and flame properties of melamine foam prevent it from being a fire hazard[citation needed].

[edit] As a cleaner
In the early 21st century it was discovered that melamine foam was an effective abrasive cleaner. The open cell foam is microporous and its polymeric substance is extremely hard, so that when used for cleaning it works like extremely fine sandpaper, getting into tiny grooves and pits in the object being cleaned. On a larger scale the material feels soft. Because the bubbles interconnect, its structure is more like a maze of fibreglass strands than like the array of separate bubbles in, for example, styrofoam.

Rubbing with slightly moistened foam may remove otherwise "uncleanable" external markings from surfaces. For example, it can remove crayon, magic marker, and grease from painted walls, wood finishings, plastic-adhering paints from treated wooden tables, adhesive residue, and grime from hub caps[citation needed]. The surface being cleaned may be finely scratched if not hard. The foam wears away, rather like a pencil eraser, and leaves a slight residue behind which can be rinsed away.

Melamine foam for cleaning uses is supplied by several companies under brand names such as:

We did a facelift in our kitchen, saving us thousands of dollard, due to Magic Erasers! I love my kitchen cupboards but they were looking every bit of their 24 years old. We had to do something so I figured there was nothing to lose. I scrubbed them down with Magic Erasers, rinsed them with whited vinegar water and then used paste wax on them. Even my cleaning lady thought we had bought new cupboards.

What other things does it clean? I've had a package here for years and only used it a couple of times. The kids are grown so no need to do the walls. lol

I had some old plastric Barbie toy furniture pieces from childood that had a yellow dirty film on them. Cleaned them with my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, sold on Ebay for a nice amount.

Malexia, the walls we cleaned were all flat paint. Since they worked so well, we used them in an apartment we thought had to be painted. They saved us 2 paint jobs.

My experience has been that a magic eraser burnishes wall paint, so that when you look from the side, the cleaned area has a different appearance.

Even without the ministrations of "Magic Eraser" ...

... when you look at people from the side ...

... they look different, too.

(Dogs, too, though they'd probably have a "hairy" if you tried using "Magic Eraser" on them!).

Would they work as a cheap, home-made exfoliation procedure, do you figure? Much less costly than a spa!
