Anyone have an Amazon Rewards credit card?

The Amazon Rewards card is one of those that awards points for every dollar spent--more points if you spent your money at Amazon.com, for instance. It used to then issue Amazon gift certificates when you'd earned enough points. I used to get them in the mail fairly regularly.

I realized recently that it's been quite a while since I've received a gift cert. So I called Chase (the card issuer) last night and asked why. Turned out they'd changed their policy and now let the points accumulate until the credit card holder decides to redeem them.

Turned out I had quite a few points, and I could redeem them for $200 in Amazon gift certificates or $200 in cash. I took the latter option.

I mention it here because I was unaware of the change in policy, and maybe someone else would like to know about it, too.

$200.! That's great! Glad you noticed things had changed.

DH saw that that we had 14000 points on the credit card we are planning to cancel (not a Chase card). I didn't think we'd be able to get anything decent, but when I took a look at the redemption site I was surprised that we were able to get $100. worth of gift cards.

i have been hearing alot of credit card companies have changed their points policy. i don't use credit cards so i haven't paid much attention to this. i did read about Chase or BOA loosing their NFL agreement and the card holders who have accumulated points to use for NFL tix, merchandise or training camp vacations suddenly had 1 month to use all their points and it's not even football season yet! this caught my eye because we have several bears season tix that are sold off online to people who use their points. ~ liz

I had a Sears card many years ago, didn't use it. A year ago last Fall, I bought a freezer and to get an additional discount + sale price, signed up for and put the freezer on a new card that day (they said the old card no longer valid). I was surprised to find myself with another MasterCard, not a Sears card. Paid the bill in full when it arrived, and just before the holidays a few weeks ago I called and asked them to cancel the card, I kept getting mailings, offers, and there was very little chance I would ever use the card. I have one for business, one household, and one I keep in my desk for online orders, booking reservations, more than enough. They argued slightly, then agreed to cancel the card for me.

Thank you all for your suggestions. However, it unfortunately seems that here in Europe these cards are limited. I only found two cash back cards that pay money, one I'm not eligible for as you need a very large monthly spend for it to pay out (no point spending more to save), and the other is from a company I simply don't like. Other cards were linked to expensive or non-local shops I don't shop at. However, I discovered that the supermarket I almost always shop at offers a card that allows you to collect club card points anywhere you use it, which relate to 1% off everything, and double points in the store that issues it. I already spend around Â£1200 a year in this shop for many food and household items, so I will be able to indirectly turn all the points I collect in to real money savings. You can also turn the points in to vouchers of higher value, but they're for various products I wouldn't normally buy, so I'll just use them to save on things I do buy. If anyone is considering one of these cards, I'd suggest checking out your usual shops to see if any of them offer credit cards with rewards. Being able to use the rewards in shops you can easily get to and consider good value for money is worth far more than collecting seemingly huge rewards for shops you don't like, can't easily get to, and potentially are more expensive, thus reducing the value of the rewards.

I have not sold back any BOOKS, but I DID sell back an XBOX 360.. It was in PRISTINE condition amd had been purchased FROM them (which is why they solicited me to ask if I wanted to sell it back) and I had all parts, instructions, etc.. They quoted me a price, but when the system arrived at their facility, they sent me a revised price MUCH MUCH MUCH lower.. I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Amazon...am a Prime member and have been buying from them since the early years when they often included a little gift in the box (lile a pack of Post-It notes or similar) but I was extremely disappointed in this transaction.

dedtired, with that 8K purchase, that you paid off after a few days, and accumulated a lot of points ... would there have been fewer points given if you'd let the amount owing run till after the billing date? If not, as Elmer suggested to several, why bother? Granted ... all the interest that 8K will accrue in 15 - 45 days or so won't buy many ice cream cones! But, as I've often suggested to young folks, general public, financial workers, etc., "Learning how money works is an interesting hobby ... and IT PAYS WELL!" Taxes, too! _________________________ Don't know whether this is current, or how many may follow it, but I've heard that it's part of the contract many credit card issuers require of the dealers is that they can't offer discounts for cash purchases. Which annoys me, paying for many of my purchases with cash. Maybe I should ask a store with the credit card sticker on the door whether there's a discount for cash, and if none, walk out, leaving the goods behind. But ... then ... there's my time ... and letting the annoyance get to me. Plus, with my "credit" (read "debt") card ... being old, and forgetful, don't help, when they want you to have a mess of capital and small letters, numbers, symbols, etc. for your PIN ... and change it frequently ... ... how was that, again, please? ole joyful

forgot to mention...i wonder how exactly they will be handling that cash payout situation.... get enough $$ back and amazon has to file w IRS and receiver pays tax on it. if amazon considers it a "bonus" then you will get an IRS form to pay tax on it too. ~ liz

Lydia, I just wanted to mention that canceling a credit card can adversely affect your credit score. Makes no sense to me, but that's apparently the way it is. (This is why I have a couple of unused credit cards.) I think there may be a way to handle the cancellation that avoids this, but I'm not sure. Perhaps you should check it out before canceling.

Alisande, I know. I don't care, but DH does. This is the credit card company that allowed an old canceled card to be used and the purchases were put on our new card! They are the ones who canceled the old card in the first place because of "suspicious activity".

So it's cancel the card or keep it and maybe get more fraudulent charges? I don't know. I think I'd rather have a lowered credit score instead of having to deal with getting charges removed off my account.

When I cancelled my Chase card, (they had taken over other bank) a couple of years ago, I asked for confirmation to be sent by mail, which they did. They then sent another cc, unasked. I was so mad and will have nothing to do with Chase.

Yep, I remember getting that from Amazon a few months ago. It takes me a long time to get a reward because I use it so infrequently.

Thanks Alisande, I ordered four $50 certificates. That was easy! I knew I could go look but this thread encouraged me to do it now. Wish I had done it sooner, we will be in an over priced rental car this week, that cert would have come in handy!

I just cashed in my $50 cash back bonus award with Discover. They did a direct deposit into my bank account. :0) That's what I used as an excuse to go shopping....and buy this ceramic garden stool...:0)

Years ago I had $13,000 owed on a Discover card. Their "rewards" plan gave me two $100 gift certificates for Macys, which I gave as Christmas gifts to my two ultra-picky sisters in law. Since then, I've received no offers from discover. I wonder if they've ended their "rewards' program? Well at least I no longer owe them $13,000!!!

jannie.....Discover still gives 1% cash back and I signed up for the 5% cash back on certain items.....check your online account or last statement...it keeps track of your bonus points.
