My dear late cousin Terry's garden (pics and link)

Many of you held my hand through my cousin Terry's sudden illness, liver transplant, and death last September. Her friends have helped her husband maintain Terry's gorgeous flower garden, and this past Saturday it was featured on a garden tour. I drove up for the day and took these pictures.

I want to photograph it again in September and next June. Dave, Terry's husband, built the house and all the outbuildings--including a charming space . . . for the chickens! I'll get pictures of everything next time.

Wow, that's a really beautiful garden. I think someone that much about nature and about gardening is a special person. You must miss him.

Susan, That's so beautiful and lush. I looked at every picture and really hated when I came to the last one. I hope you will get more pictures the next time. I'm looking forward to seeing them.
Terry definitely had a green thumb and obviously some very dear friends to help maintain her gardens.
Dave is quite talented to do all that building. I'll bet he misses Terry so much. How did he seem to you when you saw him?

Thanks, both of you. Yes, her husband is very interested in keeping the garden up. He's an avid vegetable gardener, but since Terry did the flowers, he was afraid of getting overzealous with weeding and pulling the wrong thing. He's a hard worker by nature, but he really poured on the energy to help get the garden ready for the tour. All that perfect edging...... Except for some trees, none of what you see was there when they bought the property (which includes a pond) many years ago. All those plantings are in raised beds that they created. They did an extraordinary job. I don't know how long the friends will help to maintain the garden at that level, but they seem to be a dedicated bunch.

bump for Dougald. Thank you for introducing me to this book, Dougald. There is no email address on your GWeb profile page, so I hope you see this add-on to the thread. I'm in process of reading the book. It is not one you read quickly, so I read a chapter and think about it. The addition of rocks and mountains is something I'll have to think about for a long time. It is the way they also incorporate water into the garden. Since things are always symbolic of other things, I trust it will be in line with the Chinese style to find a suitable work-around in my garden. It won't be classical, but it will be as close a substitute as my location (and budget and capabilities) allow. I'm at that chapter about Chinese landscape art--paintings or scrolls, not actually in the garden--and that is where I'm lingering for a while. It must look natural even though contrived. What for me to do! I get the ideas of "borrowing views" and creating long views, multiple changing vantage points with openings in the shrubs and trees, always framing a lovely prospect. Some architecture....provided by my Teahouse wall, the new latticed screen going in to break up the western sunlight and block the glare of two noxious street lights uninvited to the scene. Of course there are no large expanses of land here. Mine would be no imperial site since it forms a personal and private garden on a city lot. By Friday afternoon, the tall latticed 40 foot wide screen will be installed, and I can proceed to prettying up the last section of my walled garden. I am adding no gates....that is mentioned in this book too...but instead I am locating objects or features which will be framed in the two gateways and serve to invite one into the garden. Of the two views through the openings in the latticed screen, one is of a crape myrtle (now in bloom) beside a pole with a bluebird nestbox on it. I will be able to see the comings and goings of the bluebirds building their nests and feeding their young, from the low deck off our bedroom. The other opening serves to reveal the darker territory beneath a sasanqua (camellia) where I recently located a white (plastic) tiered fountain. This fountain will not have water but will have ferns and tall spraying liriope planted, with pots of small hosta nestled in their midst. A Limelight hydrangea will provide more greenish white flower balls in that vicinity as well. This ungated opening near the door to the Teahouse is also visible from the deck off the back of our house, be it from the spot off our bedroom, or the area behind my kitchen. The entire back of our house--when the remodel is done--will be a wall of glass. It gives me an uncompromised view of the garden through the latticed screen....and privacy from all outside eyes. Except maybe for the small aircraft which pass overhead. So thank you Dougald. I hope you see this. The book is delightful.

terrene, what is your recipe for your suet log? Where did you get the log? Did you make it? I am wanting to provide some food for BBs but haven't found the best way to provide it. I am not wanting to get into mealworms since we have tons of natural insects in our area. I am in North Texas...we have BBs all year long. Last season I had one of my boxes claimed by chickadees & then the BBs took it over before the chickadees laid their eggs. I have 3 boxes up in different areas of my yard because I also have titmice that use them. I am planning to put up 2 other houses in my neighbor's yards so I can have the boxes at least 100 yards apart. I had only the one nest last year that I didn't have enough of a snake guard on it & before I realized it...4 of the five BB babies were eaten. I was so UPSET. It probably was the same rat snake that ate a nest of mockers in my front holly bush! I was SICK! This winter I am putting up 5 ft PVC slicked & tons of netting to prevent this from happening again! I am planting elderberries for them as well as some other native berry plants for the winter. They start their first nesting here usually in January or February. We usually have 4-5 broods a season. I'm hoping to get more nesters once I have more boxes up in the proper locations. I also have a lot of trees in a dry creek bed & I have lots of woodpeckers & holes that some of the BBs probably use. We have both wooded areas & open fields in the area I live so there are a ton of BBs. I have never had them come to my birdbathes because of all the tanks for livestock in our area. We are in a suburb that still has lots of farming & ranching going on. Lots of cows, goats, & horses in our area. I also have housing up for martins but haven't been successful in attracting them yet. This will be my 7th season for trying. One year, I think I had a very aggressive male BB that used my martin housing & perches to hunt from! I blamed him that year for scaring any potential martins away. I am hoping this spring will be both blue & purple!!! LOL I gave up last summer & started focusing on butterfly gardening. So now I'm not only a "BIRD" nut but also a butterfly nut! I raised a dozen monarches & 6 Black swallowtails & have at least 5 crysalises left that will hopefully wait until spring to eclose! I lost one last week that's wings didn't open & it died. :o( I have used sialis to get lots of info from! It is the best for BBs I have found! Luck to all BB'ers!!! ;o)

Karenseb: My customer contacted me through www.homeadvisor. It's free to homeowners and you can read the ratings of potential contractors. You must be a contractor customer to write a review and contractors are unable to remove a poor review and can only respond in writing. I highly recommend them. Truthfully, I got a little spanking on my review on this job. She loved the work, but the vent apparently didn't suck as much dust on the island as it did next to the stove. Even though your kitchen becomes a fab shop for a day on a job like this, I offered to reimburse her cleaning expenses. I'm going to do more protection, and charge more for it, on the next one. You can get a one pound box of MB 12, the stuff I use to make it shine, for $29.95 at DeFusco Industrial Supply as well as Tenax Proseal in a pint. Thanks, everyone. Linda, I saw Dave under ideal circumstances: surrounded by friends and family, and able to share Terry's garden (and his own vegetables and herbs) with people after working his tail off to get it ready. Dave is one hard worker, and it's good that he has many projects to keep him busy. Some of them involve a museum/library that's being created/remodeled, part of which will be dedicated to Terry. So things like that really motivate him. Plus he has many friends who encourage him to go places and do things. I think many widowers tend to withdraw and drop out. That can have bad consequences, so I'm glad to see this hasn't happened to Dave.

What a peaceful and serene garden. I would like to think that Terry's spirit enjoys that space even today. I'm sure that the helping hands of friends and family help Dave move through the days...

Susan- what a beautiful garden. I can imagine how refreshing it must be in person and I can easily picture myself sitting there with a glass of lemonade. How large of an area is it? That takes so much work to keep up. Was it just the 2 of them who did all the work to develop those areas? What a testament to your cousin that she had so many friends who volunteered to take care of it for Dave.

How nice of everyone to work on Terry's garden, it sure is a beautiful tribute. I love the old shoe used as a planter. My MIL was too disabled to garden but when she passed away I planted a lilac in her memory the following spring. It's still a tiny little thing but I enjoy nuturing it.

Oh my! What a lovely home and garden. It makes me miss our former home and garden in New Hampshire. Terry must have been a wonderful person to have created such wonderful retreat. Thanks for the tour Susan. I enjoyed it.
