New Zealand Judge Nixes Baby's Name

Actually, the girl is nine years old, but when she was born her parents named her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

I don't think I'm in danger of offending any KT members who have beloved grandmothers with this name. :-)

A family court judge in New Zealand ordered that the girl be renamed. In his ruling, the judge cited other objectionable names. Registration officials blocked some of them, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

If only they had stopped at Talula it would be cute.

When oldest DS was born the ex was stationed at Tule Air Base (sp? its been 25+ years) in Greenland, considered this as a middle name for a girl.

I was adopted as a month old baby and have often heard how the whole extended family gathered in celebration ahead to discuss what my name would be. One grandmother was really pushing for Opal, Dad wanted Christina, and the other grandmother wanted Maria. Thankfully, I was named Holly, a name I have always liked because it's common enough but not weird. My husband has an unusual name and he is the staid accountant type, while I am the artistic one. He has always hated his name and when he left home, abbreviated it to something common. It grieved his mother somewhat but she and the rest of the family still call him by the given name. I have always found his given name interesting but he said if we have children, they will be either William, John or Mary! Or something equally foolproof! I had a friend who named her son William and I was dumbfounded, it seemed so uncreative. (not that it's not a perfectly respectable, historically noble name).

I don't think someone has metioned this, but sound out the first name with your last name. If you have a tongue twisting last name (like mine with two "Z"s) you want to go with simple classic names or the whole name will be too much. I always loved the name Zackary, but with a Z last name that was out. I choose Thomas for my son because of that reason and he could be either Tommy, Tom or Thomas when he grew up. I use to call him Thomas up to grade school. Then he came home one day and told me his name now was Tommy. Today at 25 he goes by Tom. So he has been all three. My preference is for classic names that have stood the test of time and are not trendy. Maybe because I have such a classic name myself. Clare

Just like last year my NZL is putting out a ton of flowers while some leaves drop and grown pre-ripe fruit drops to feed flower that turn to fruits that were then sacrificed to produce more flowers. Was growing daily and stopped when tree started flowering then dropped as new fruits started. Flavorless. The new set of fruit-lets will grow and the tree will flower again and drop the growing fruits to feed the flowers. My tree is under good light. Oh my. How did a family court judge get involved in the child's name after 9 years I wonder? I can't imagine why a parent would do that to a child. Some of those names are downright abusive.

There is a child I know whose first name is Max-A-Million. Not Maximillian...nooooo....Max-A-Million. He's a special needs child and because kids can be downright cruel, I'm sure his name is fodder for some mean-spirited kids. At least he can shorten it to Max, but his parents both insist on calling him Max-A-Million. From what I understand the father is a psychologist. Gheesh.

When I was born soon to be 60 years ago they would not let my mom name me Jackie it had to be Jacqueline~~that was proper to whomever and Jackie was a nick name my parents could call me:)

Hats off to thet Judge! While in hosp. years ago I saw a Dr. refused to sign a Birth Certificate for a set of parent's chosen name for thier premmie...T-9-C of all things! He said change it to a 'proper' name or you'll get no B. C. They did. (Some people's IQ/ignorance equals their shoe size.)
