Those look like eggs to me, and I'd squish them! That is terrible advice wihout knowing what they are. Although Katydid eat leaves don't they also eat insects like aphids?

disease on my maples branches

Really need to see photos to correctly diagnose disease issues. Rapid branch dieback is often attributed to verticillium wilt but leaves decaying "from the inside out" doesn't really fit nor does the branches blackening.....at least that rapidly. Post photos of the tree with as much of a close up of the affected area/plant tissue as you can manage and we'll do our best. If it IS VW, there is nothing you can do.

Cool pics! I put out an Oriole sugar feeder and orange slices every year and this year saw a male Baltimore Oriole drinking at the feeder once very early in the morning. Would be SO wonderful to see them around Thanks for filling out some of your info, but it would be great if you could also put your camera and lens info on your MyPage so people can refer to it when they admire your photos

Replace the zip ties as stated above. If there is any pliability in the trunk just above where your top tie is now, you may have a chance. Put one stake on the side where it is leaning and tie it off where your top tie is now. Put a second stake on the opposite side with a tie above the branch below the car door. GENTLY see how high you can lift that bend before you feel too much resistance and tie it high on that second stake. Come back in a month and see if you can lift it any higher. The key is how pliable that bend is. tj

Joan,
Have you thought of publishing a book of your photos with the captions you write? I'm sure it would be of great interest to many people. You have a true gift for photography, and humor!
