Comments (2)its hard to come to any conclusions WITHOUT A PIC ... a 10 foot transplant took huge stresses in the digging .. moving.. and planting ... winter was probably minor after all that ... [and even worse.. if it was grown to 10 foot in a pot] i hope you have PERFECTED WATERING ... see link for a discussion after reading such.. if you want to discuss/compare how you are doing it.. feel free ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreBent Japanese Maple (Emperor One). Comments (3)Hi Dsqx, big transplant I would vote against trying to tilt this tree. If you must think of it as lifting up one end and shoving more dirt in on that side. No need to torture your back and your father's back again. Man, you two planted a 13' tall tree! Reasons against: -It is a tree, and a Japanese maple at that. It just is not going to grow straight as an arrow and Japanese maples have a bit of a unique form anyway. -As you noticed with all the damage last year, Emperor I and all JM's I know are only marginal in zone 5. Transplanting and digging up before winter stresses them further. I wonder if early spring would be better if you decide to do this. Maybe the high res picture will convince me otherwise. Maybe I am just sorta a hippie with a less formal landscape lol. Either way, good luck and I am impressed with the work you must have done planting it!...See MoreDwarf Japanese Maple - Crack where branch meets trunk.
Comments (6)Good advice from brandon7 if you choose to install a bolt. This sort of crack is, unfortunately, fairly common in Japanese maples, especially the weeping types. If it were me, I think I would avoid drilling through the main trunk to install a bolt. This puts the entire tree at some risk. Leaving things as they are and hoping for the best would at least mean the survival of 2/3's of the tree. If you live in an area where snow and ice are possibilities in the winter, I'd definitely install either a shelter for the entire tree or a "crutch" for the branch. The weight of snow/ice would make things worse and possibly result in a complete break....See MorePlease help, my Japanese Maple has a split
Comments (4)The info you got before is correct an old now healed wound probably from the winter or the freeze or the move.....keep an eye on it if black areas appear in spring it may be Pseudonomous and should be treated with fungicide... it comes out in cool damp weather and as the summer progresses often just sort of disappears and the wound heals ...then in the sping it starts again. Its mostly on the root stock which is good so if it is more than just winter damage you should try to KEEP it there !!! and not let it spread up the tree. In addition as long as it stays on one side the tree will live if it encircles it it's toast above that point...but as i said that is a worst case scenareo of disease and you should know next spring for sure ...as far as I'm concerned for now do nothing and wait... if you want to loosly put a plastic tree guard around it i guess that wouldn't hurt but that would be it for now..David...See MoreKathleen May
