Alaska going people - question for you

We going to Alaska for 1.5 weeks and I want some input from you all.

We'll be in a car and driving along the road between Seward - Anchorage - Denali NP - Fairbanks.

Given the opportunity: what would you see and where will you go?

Do not miss Denali - The national park is fantastic but you can only enter on their buses but worth it. The state park is where the the mountain is and it is a sight not to be missed, esp. if you are lucky enough to see it emerge from the clouds. We spent two days there, primarily waiting for the mountain and it was marvelous. It's prime tourist season there now, so be aware of that.

Get ahold of the current edition of 'Milepost'.. Lots of good information! Don't know if if's online - it's been 15 years since we needed to use it!

I found this thread by accident and am very happy that I'm not the only person in the world who doesn't like dog - or any droppings for that matter - in my yard. We live on a corner and it amazes me how people will allow their dogs to run 20 feet up into my yard on one of those 'wonderful' retractable leashes. To me that's trespassing, plain and simple. On more than one occasion I have flung open a window and shouted quite loudly 'CAN YOU KEEP YOUR DOG OFF MY GRASS PLEASE', and then slammed the window shut so they got the hint that not only didn't I appreciate it but let them know they could be seen. I mean, what is it about windows, they think you can't see out?? And I don't care if they pick it up, it's STILL there. If you doubt me, go step on the grass where someone has just 'picked it up' and then sniff your shoes. Nice, eh? It's still on the top of the grass and you're gonna track the smell everywhere you walk. My favorite is what happened recently - I walk a treadmill in the evenings after dinner when many people walk their dogs, and I can see out two windows, one on the side of the house and one in the front. One evening I see a couple come walking two big dogs, a couple I've seen before, not every day but off and on. Never really paid much attention to them, I just see them through the window when they go by. On this particular night I'm walking, and I see them coming back from the end of the street, and I saw a bag in her left hand and thought, Oh, well that's good, at least they're one of those walkers who picks up. And as I'm looking at them - and this all happened in a matter of seconds - she suddnely turns towards her husband (which meant she was turned away from my house so I'm just seeing her back), she kind of leans in towards her husband, like she's saying something to him, then straightens back up and continues walking. As they continued walking, I notice a bag at the edge of the neighbors grass across the street and immediately looked at her hand. No bag. So here you have someone who probably picks it up but then will simply drop the bag somewhere so they don't have to take it home. As hubby said, not only is that a really low thing to do, it's littering. So I got in my car and followed them to see where they lived - which was in a completely different neighborhood than ours so obviosuly they come to OURS to do this - and then after dark I retrieved the bag and 'returned' it to them by tossing it up onto their driveway. I was really hoping it would still be dark when they left for work in the morning and they would drive right through it. At any rate, no one has seen them since, which I would hope is because they're too embarrassed to be seen on our street knowing they were caught doing something so unkind, and also because they now know WE know where they live. And like my husband says, we're pretty sure this probably isn't the first time they've done this, they just never got caught before.

I've yet to find a tumbled stone that ISN'T suitable for a backsplash. AS for the difference, tumbling implies a finish that can be found on many different types of natural stone. One would be marble. Another would be some of the many limestones, including travertine. I've also used tumbled slate before. I guess both have to be sealed before installation. That depends. If you're going to do the installation yourself, then yes, it's a real good idea. If you have a pro installing it, I'd leave it to his discretion. Many pros (including myself) would rather grout the stone "raw", and then it would get sealed afterward. So long as the installer realizes that whichever way he goes, that stone better be nice and clean when it's done.

Wood island/counter people...questions for you!

I keep seeing these super sealed shiny looking wood island tops in photos and think they have to be more indestructible than a typical butcher block would be. In case you don't want super shiny, Waterlox can be done in a Satin finish which looks more like a hand-rubbed oil finish with the waterproof protection of something shinier. You'd use the original/sealer for the first 2 coats, then follow with cloth-applied coats of the Satin. Waterlox also has a marine finish, which is recommended for exterior uses, but isn't necessary on countertops. In the following photo, you can see the Waterlox Satin, hand-rubbed type of sheen on the cabinet door vs the lacquer finish DH sprayed on the trim around the bookshelf...He forgot about the Waterlox we were doing in our house, and was doing another project with the lacquer and finished both together.

dandgbb or other island hood people -- question for you!

If you don't follow the manufacturer's recommendations and, instead, mount it higher, then you need to have a more powerful hood (higher cfms) and/or a larger hood. Because of the greater air movement, for island hoods it's highly recommended they be at least 24" deep and at least 6" wider than the cooking surface (so, 36" cooktop/42" hood)....and that's if it's mounted no higher than the manufacturer's installation instructions state. BTW...if it's 30" off the cooking surface, it's not as low as it seems. Our hood is mounted 30" above the cooking surface and it hasn't been a problem with head bumping...and we're all over 5'10" in our family (up to 6'6", so far). [Yes, we have a wall hood, but it's 24" deep and will be the same for you.] If you do want it higher, and I understand b/c at 30" it will be blocking your view (one of the pitfalls of having an island cooktop/range), so just get one more powerful and bigger and mount it at 36" or maybe even 42".

The most memorable of our 47 days in Alaska was the visit to Jeff King's Husky Homestead in Denali Park. We took a bus, provided by the family business to his training facility/home. There were numerous fires in the area, so our visit to the park was disappointing. Every museum and tourist attraction that we did see was SO very well done. Lucky You!
And don't forget the fish dinners....SOO wonderful!

I currently live in Fairbanks. As someone mentioned above, you must see Denali and the best way to see it is on the bus, because personal vehicles are only allowed up to the 9mile mark and you can't go any further unless you're on a bus. The trip itself is about 5-6 hours long through the park, so you should get there early.

As for Fairbanks, Pioneer Park is a little park full of museums and such to see. One of the places is the -40*F room to experience how cold it is in the winter. Yes, that sounds crazy, and it is. lol However, my fiance had me go in that room as my 'thing I had to do' before he would propose (he had to learn to drive a standard, who had the better end of the deal? lol).

If you have the time, go to the El Dorado Gold Mine. You'll be taken on a train ride tour of the gold mine and at the end you'll pan for gold.

Also, if you have the time - go to Chena Hot Springs. It's a beautiful place to go and see. Water feels amazing and helps you relax. There's an Ice Museum to see (open year-round).

And one other thing about Pioneer Park - Friday nights they have what they call the "Salmon Bake" outdoor cooking night where they have Salmon, Cod, Halibut, Prime Rib, and usually Crab legs along with salad bar, rolls, drinks, etc. All you can eat, and it's a wonderful experience - outdoors and as I said, it's just a fun experience. It's about $30? per person, but worth it.

Oh, thought of something else. lol Up the road in North Pole (yes, we have a North Pole, Alaska) there is Santa's House that's always open and reindeer behind the house in a fenced in area.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it too. lol

I agree, take the longest bus tour into Denali...and be prepared for a wonderful day! Take a lunch and a camera. WE saw grizzlies right next to the bus! Saw so many animals and fabulous scenery.

I'd second the ElDorado gold mine. Sounded corny to me, but the information and experience is fun.

The Fairbanks University Muesum was excellent. It is small, but very diversified and the displays are first rate. The local history displays were wonderful.

There is also a museum in Ketichkan that I did not have time for, but looked wonderful as well.

Speak to as many locals during your trip and be fluid on your plans. That way you can see the real alaska and not just the touristy stuff. We took a river raft trip from Talkeetna, in Denali. Our guide, Spencer, was local born and a wealth of knowledge.

Also look into the water ferries that run up the coast. I understand that it is a good way to get around.

Just a PS...That Pioneer Park and Salmon bake is great, also the theater show. I would also add Palmer.. find out the history of that beautiful little town. (Lunch there was great too) Friendly people that really love who they are and how they got there. Nanny
