Jodi, I have a question about Alaska.

Jodi, In the picture thread, you said you are going to Alaska in a couple weeks. Last time you went in the Winter, so this should be very different.

Since you are going in June, that is, if I have this right, at the time of the LONGEST DAY of the year. In Alaska it will be light out for most of the day.

There is only ONE real reason why I would LOVE to visit Alaska in the summer. That is the way things grow fast during those long days. It just facinates me! I once talked to someone who lived there for several years, and she said you can almost SEE things grow! I don't know how literal she ment that, but, can you check it out for me??? Maybe you can take a picture of something at 6AM and then again at 10PM - Just to show me if it changed that day!

That is, if you have nothing else to do while you are there! LOL

Have a great time - and don't get eaten by anything! My fear of wild animals keeps me from such places(along with lack of funds!)

Hey Jude (I've always wanted to say that :-)

On Monday May 17th we'll be leaving on a 13 day cruise from Los Angeles to Seattle, five ports in AK and then to Victoria/Vancouver, Canada where we fly home on May 30th.

I suspect it will be light most most of the day. I know when I was in Antarctica during the summer, a photo I took at midnight came out exceptionally well because of the light levels. Course nothing but lichen grow in Antarctica so I didn't witness the long day/fast growing plant phenomenon.

I will try to remember to take a photo of a few plants early in the day on one or more of our stops and then before we board the ship that night to test your theory.

Coincidentally, just last weekend I was on a hike where the docent told us the Yucca plant grows equally fast during spring and summer months and were encouraged to take a photo of a Yucca at the beginning of the hike and later on the return trip. We never got close enough to a Yucca to measure the height early on, so that theory never got tested.

My biggest fear of going to AK in the spring or summer is not the wild animals, but the mosquitoes which are supposed to be thick as soup in some areas. I do not deal well with skeeters. I am allergic to many of them and scar for months from their bites.

Gosh, the first time I went to AK, I was challenged to find a boat from the TV show The Deadliest Catch, which I did. This challenge will be much easier if I can remember to bring a tape measure. :-)

Thank you for your quick answer.

I don't deal well with skeeters either, and we have plenty in MN. The best solution to that problem that I know is to stay indoors after dark - BUT - I think in Alaska those hungry "big buggers" are even a bother during the day. I supose they need to "make hay while the sun is shining to."

Thank you for trying to prove something for me, and have lots of fun. I look forward to your pictures. Your sure do have an adventurous life!

Thanks guys, I will indeed check out the links you offered. One of the farm service companies here is advertising a Bausch & Lomb 20x for something like 18.00 and from some of the few prices I have seen so far this might be a nice deal. Cathy, I just had a mental vision of myself with those over-the-head lenses on...maybe that's a cheaper cure for my astigmatism?? At least then I could pluck my own eyebrows a bit more efficiently!

No sooner did I hit submit to the KT and the Bosch reply came in about the beeping problem. It's almost like they are reading the KT too. :-) I'll have to wait until I get home to try their solution for the dishwasher. I also complained to them about the beeping on the microwave but turns out there is no way of turning it off without turning off the timer beep as well. How stupid is that!?! ... sigh Jodi-

Hi Lily - I read your profile . . . I live in a farmhouse of about the same vintage in Pennsylvania, too. Ah, sleep! I didn't get enough of it last night, that's for sure. Like many people with FM, I have a window of sleep opportunity each night. Some nights it's very small. If I don't get to sleep right then (and often it comes when I'm in the middle of doing something), I can't fall asleep later when I want to. When that happens, I've found melatonin often solves the problem. I highly recommend it! Last night, thought, I had stayed up late to finish a project that is due today, and even melatonin didn't help. Also like many people with FM, my nervous system is out of whack. I'm kept awake by the slightest disturbance, and "disturbance" could be anything. These days I have my ailing cat, Princeton, in my bedroom. This has not been good for my sleep. Sleep aside, one of the biggest things that has helped my FM is breathing. Proper breathing, that is. Abdominal breathing. I try to make a point of lying down each day and breathing deeply, even if it's only for 15 minutes. Sometimes I fall asleep. But even if I don't, I always get up feeling better.

Jodi, DH and I went to Alaska on May 9th one year for ten days and the mosquitos hadn't come out yet.....hope the same holds for you.

Carol, what was the weather like when you went? I've been looking at the weather for the ports I'll be visiting and it looks like it'll be between the 50s and 60s.

Poor DH really wanted to go somewhere warm but the cost of airfare to get to the departure ports is prohibitive in the timeframe we can travel. We were thrilled to find one way tickets from Vancouver to LA for only $105 per person. That combined with a last minute cruise offer makes for a pretty affordable vacation.

We took a cruise to Alaska back in 2004. In one of the towns, they have a park/square which has a rhubarb plant that's something like 150 years old. It was huge! Obviously because of the long summer days.

Jodi, the weather was mostly in the low to mid 50's with some rain.
We dressed in layers and it wasn't a problem.
On the ship while viewing Glacier Bay, etc, DH and I sat on our deck, wrapped in blankets drinking room service hot chocolate or coffee.
