Mine is doing good,hubby does most of the work,I water every other day.we have a 5x8 wood raised beds full of beans ,we picked we got 3 big gallon bags full the first pickin.we got about 8 squash,cucumbers,I had a bid patch of like 7 different lettaces,tomatoes went nuts last 2 weeks heat I guess.peppers are doing good so is corn.Im happy.

Mine has been terrible this year. It looks about over and I haven't got much of anything this year. No rain, too hot & too much rain. I'll try again next year.

Too warm too early and far too much rain in June has made for a disappointing display in my gardens. The heat in March led to early growth of perennials, shrubs and trees which got a nasty zap of heavy frost in mid May. Then the rain started and didn't quit till mid June, when at last I was able to plant the tomatoes, squash, some annuals and perennials that I bought the last week of May. My perennial beds with all that rain have gone rampant. The weeds seem to be taking over. The heavy rains in late May/early June beat up the flowers on the early bloomers thet weren't destroyed by the late freeze. Things that normally bloom mid summer and later have been affected negativly by the higher than normal heat and humidity of the last 2 weeks. Rampant but spindly growth and sparse flowering seems to be what is happening. Sedum that normally blooms in late August/September is starting to bloom now. Growth is weak and splaying because with the fast early growth and prolonged rain they didn't get their usual pinchiong back in June.

One bright spot in all this is that the *&^*%$^%# Japanese Beetles are few and far between this year.

IMO, this is the summer from hell.Horrendous heat in the triple digits and today before noon it's 96!! And hardly any rain except a storm three days ago.

I didn't plant one this year but Amber did and it is doing really well. She gave me a lot of green beans today and I have them cooking and I also brought home cucumbers, and tomatoes. She has peppers and zucchini ready also. Everything looks good in their garden. She has a nice row of sweet potatoes growing also. She has been picking a lot of nice blueberries and my black raspberries did well. The corn fields in this area are really nice looking this year. They were about six foot tall by the Fourth of July this year. So can't complain about the growing season here.

I have a bad habit of planting too close. ("How big can that little tomato really get?") Ditto for the zucchini. Just ripped one out because it was going to kill a rose bush. I've had a few zucchini, a few tomatoes, but we're just getting started with the heat here, so there will be a couple more months of harvest. Peppers are doing ok, but I haven't harvested much of them yet. Spring ran late in So. CA.

I feel bad for all us gardeners who are not having a wonderful growing season at all..I feel your pain..Kat are those gorgeous pictures from your garden????

I'm jealous! I can always count on my Cannas when all else fails to prosper. However, the giant grasshopers worked them over and they sure look pitiful.

Everything is pretty lush in our area.....corn fields are "as high as an elephant's eye" and looking great.
My self-watering containers are doing great and are full of tomatoes, peppers and cukes.

Mine's doing pretty good. Flowers, not veggies. Here in OK. we've had an extremely uncomfortable summer. Even though the temps are in the low 90s, the humidity has been around 70% most of the time. One day the humidity was 97%! And then it rained. lol.

We've had some good and heavy rains this past month and the flowers, especially the roses just love the moisture.

My Coneflowers are starting to die off though. My main problem (so far) is yellow jackets are loving my flowers and I can't go out there to deadhead! The grasshoppers are now full grown so it will be interesting to see if they do any damage.

I have two rules, providing your plants are getting the right amount of sun.

1. In this heat, even if it's a plant that doesn't need that much water, to water it a LOT. Use the hose with no sprinkler, go over and puddle everything, then go over it again.

2. Deadhead on a daily basis. The more spent flowers you cut the more the plant will put off.

Here's a picture of the front flowerbed taken a few weeks ago. We have other beds scattered around the yard.

Spectacularly! I second oakleyok's advice about watering. We have a soaker hose system set up and we water every day, even if there's rain in the forecast. With the unbearably hot temperatures the garden needs it and I'm convinced this is why our garden is doing so well. So far we've picked lettuce, peppers, alot of yellow and green beans and peas. Our Jet Star and Roma tomatoes should be ready within the next 7-10 days and our eggplant within 3 weeks. To give you an idea of the immense growth the tomatoes have had - we planted them the last weekend of May (29 & 30), and they were all small plants, between 6-8 inches tall. They are now all between 4 and 5 feet tall. That's something for less than 7 weeks in the ground (at least I think so LOL). Woohoo!
