eBay - What would you do?

Recently I purchased a camera case for a small digital camera. The case is lined with a soft fabric, which is nice. On the exterior front of the case is the name of the camera manufacturer (doesn't matter which one it is -- several eBay sellers sell the exact same case with all the different manufacturers' names on them). A belt loop has been sewn onto the back of the case, and at the top of the belt loop is a D-ring for an included strap.

On the inside of the front of the case, there is an additional piece of the soft fabric over the area where the manufacturer's name is attached. This, of course, covers anything that "pokes through" and could scratch/damage the camera lens/viewing screen.

However, on the inside of the back of the case, the stitching that attaches the belt loop comes through, and there is nothing covering it. In a couple of spots the thread feels kind of "sharp" and I have a concern that it will scratch the camera/viewing screen. No, I don't want to take scissors and "trim off" the sharp thread, because that might cause all of the stitching to come undone. Not that I care that much about the belt loop because I doubt that I'll use it, but that stitching also attaches the D-ring for the strap, which I WILL use.

I sent this message to the seller -- "Nice case but it's kinda rough inside where the back stitching (for the belt loop) comes through. Are they all like that? I'm concerned it might scratch the lens or display (depending on how the camera is in the case)..."

The same day I received this reply -- "I have not had this issue in the past, but please send me a picture to help me understand better. I will replace the case if it is defective or offer a full refund if unsatisfied. Thank you for letting me know and I will be waiting for the pictures."

So, I took photos and sent them to the seller, with this message -- "The outside front of the case has "[name]" on it, and on the photo named "Smooth" you can see that there is a strip of the interior fabric glued/applied over that area, to protect the camera. The outside back of the case has the belt strap, and on the photo named "Rough" you can see where the stitching comes through to the inside, but it hasn't been covered. It's those two areas that are a problem."

The photos I sent are:

Smooth

and

Rough

Five days later I still hadn't heard anything from the seller, so I sent a message -- "I sent photos to you, but haven't heard from you."

And now, after another five days have gone by, I received an e-mail from PayPal, telling me that my payment has been refunded! The "message from merchant" says:

"I apologize that you were unsatisified with your case. I have refunded your money and please return the case to me at:

[Name]

[Street address]

[City, State ZIP]

Thank you for your patience and good luck finding the right case."

I'm kinda floored. I didn't ask for a refund. If the seller responded that all of the cases are exactly like that, I would have either kept the case and just put in a piece of protective fabric myself. Or, if the seller said he'd send a different case that didn't have the rough spot, I would have done an exchange.

But, here I sit with a refund of exactly what I had paid, with him expecting me to pay for return shipping on a (perhaps) defective item.

So, if I pay extra to return the dang case to him and then purchase a similar case from a different seller, I run the risk of ending up with a case with exactly the same rough spots; and I would have paid twice the shipping; and potentially have to pay more for a new case.

What would you do? Would you return the case to the seller and just eat it on the return shipping cost? (And then purchase another one on eBay and perhaps end up with another case with the exact same problem.) Or would you keep the case and say "screw it" because you didn't ask for a refund? Would you send part of the money back to the seller with the message that you're keeping the case but paying less for a defective product? Or would you do something else (if so, what)?
