Moni..you have situations these days that make you so vulnerable right now.People texting while driving,and cell phone users. We will all be holding a collective breath while you are on your bike trip, and pray for your safe return.

One thing, never toot your car horn at a bicyclist. I was once riding my bike, someone tooted their horn behind me and I fell.

I agree....it IS a scary world out there. Be careful...ok..?

I've been riding my bike a lot more lately and it IS scary.
Many of my regular routes have bike lanes, but that can be a false assurance when all it takes is a moment of distraction for a driver to drift into the bike lane.

Moni, my son is an avid biker and he has had some scary incidents! However, in our city, it is impossible to "give the bikers three feet of roadway" on some of these roads. Sometimes, they ride two abreast and it just scares the bejeebers out of me! One recently fell over in the roadway a couple of car lengths ahead of me because he wasn't watching the street and apparently hit a "pothole". I try to give them as much room as I can, but some of the bike "paths" are horrible.

In my thinking the real problem is that people are mostly inconsiderate of others and only concerned with what they want at the moment. People don't even know how to "wait" for anything they WANT!

Yes, it is. Alex wants a bike to get around UK's campus. I'm petrified. It's bad enough he has to walk around with all the idiots who drive around that area and don't pay attention or stop for pedestrians. At least 2 people I know have died since I started working at the VA almost 7 years ago, 2 others were hit in crosswalks (that I remember), one guy was hit on his bike. The traffic was stopped, I was a couple cars back and watching this woman on her cell phone turn right just when the guy on the bike thought he was safe to cross the street. He limped away from it, but I thought he was hurt worse because it took him a few minutes to get back off the pavement.

I take the Amarillo, Texas newspaper and on the front page of yesterday's paper was the story of a biker getting run over and killed near Canyon, Tx. A 21 year old bent down to get his cell phone and hit her.

How very sad!

I wish they'd make it illegal to talk/text/drive in every state. If a call is really important people should pull off the road first.

Trixie, I heard about that. There is quite a biking community out there, and good things as well as bad news make the rounds pretty fast.
It always puts knots in my stomach when I hear of such incidences. Wish there weren't any.

Patti, my ride starts the 27th, that's next Tuesday. We will update our journals on crazyguy as often as we can find internet access.

Kentucky just passed a no texting while driving, also means when sitting at stop lights. No one under 18 can use a cell phone period. Too bad they didn't extend it to everyone.

It is scarey out there.. Over the 4th holiday we had 2 local couples that were hit by a 20 year old boy that ran a stop sign. They all are still in the hospital. They all have numerous breaks and such. The one man may loose his eyesight.

One time I was going down the interstate getting ready to get off. I was in the far left hand lane about ready to turn on my turning signal when a guy on a cycle passed me on the left side. We went on down the road and did it again. That guy was asking for an accident to happen to him.

I nearly hit a bike rider after dark the other night. He had no light, reflector, or anything. Luckily I just caught a quick glimpse of him which caused me to take a second look.

Moni...I wrote a while ago about how scared for you I was on the Oregon Coast...still am, however we were further south this past weekend and a Winnebago driving friend said how scared he was of driving on the hiway because of all the bikers traveling that stretch. So, it does go both ways....(and yes, you are more vulnerable)I just wish that the bicycle lanes were a bit wider and safer for you. My best thoughts and prayers will be with you. BTW We saw the Stout Grove of Redwoods at Jedediah State Park... breathtaking and so much better than the "new" (as in when seen 30 years ago)Avenue of the Giants. Nanny
