Question for current eBayers

The library asked me to teach another eBay class, and I just realized it's this Saturday. (Oops!)

The thing is, I haven't sold anything on eBay in some time, and during my hiatus eBay seems to have made some changes. I bought something the other day, and the listing read that eBay no longer permits paper payment (or something like that). In other words, no more checks or money orders.

I have to get myself educated before I teach this class. Can you tell me about the new rules? Or point me in the direction where I can read up on them on eBay?

Paypal and some credit cards are accepted. No money, money orders, checks.

Paypal will protect the buyers and refund money if item gets lost in the mail when the seller gets delivery confirmation.

Your best bet is to go onto the ebay site and go to the site map to read the rules.

Sellers can't leave neg or neutral feedback as well.

Thanks, Heather. Yes, I'll do that. These rules sound like no fun......except for the Paypal protection.

Hi Josh, it has little to do w/ using the pic. I thought it would provide a little insight as to who this seller is. I thought the extra info might be of interest to readers. If they really wanted to boycott the seller, wouldn't it help to know as much as possible about who the seller is??? He/she has managed to remain quite elusive, despite selling all over the place. But, FWIT, while I'm sympathetic to Mariava's frustration about others using pic w/o asking first, I have never understood how one can control who can or cannot use the pic once it's on the WWW. Yes, one wants to share the beauty of the flower but not w/ everybody? How could one determine that a lil ole lady, who oohs and ahhs about the pic, isn't going to print the pic for her garage sale and sell for personal gain??? How could one identify motives once the pic is "out there"? It seems a little unrealistic to me and a source of endless frustration as one could NEVER control who uses the pic and for what motive. Whether it is this ebay seller or the hypothetical lil ole lady, neither one is selling Mariava's bulbs, they are both just trying to promote sales of their own bulbs. Only way to control is not post at all or have the most restrictive network w/ whom to share. Where's the fun in that? All a corporation would have to say is that the pic owner, in this case, Mariava, is not a professional photographer and therefore not harmed by their using the pic. Annoying, frustrating, infuriating, YES, but w/ legal standing, I doubt it. I guess you could spend money hiring a lawyer, getting copywright, etc. etc. etc. but, correct me if I'm wrong, this totally takes the fun of the innocent act of sharing a pretty pic w/ the world. M, you take fantastic pics and for years I've admired your love of hippies and your outstanding collection. we are lucky you share. That is way more important, than some jacka$$ abusing your generosity. Not worth another thought. ta ta

You're absolutely right on with many of your comments, Nancy. We too figured it was $200K to get it to what we really want. On the plus, being built with SIP (structurally insulated panels), the entire structure is super insulated from the start. Windows are I believe dbl pane, not triple. But not having a garage, is a huge minus, also the house would have to be added on to. The architect who designed it drew up plans for a good addition which we like. But this most likely won't be the house we'd purchase. It was enough to get us seriously putting pencil to paper as to what we do need, and whether we can find it. On our key list of area wants/needs: - NOT lakefront. Lake Michigan is too windy at times, Other lakefront still is a huge premium. We can't afford it. We'd rather have more land. - 2-5 acres. Something more than a city lot but less than a gentleman farm. - within 1/2 mile or so of large body of water (choice #1 Lake Michigan, choice #2 Lake Leelanau, Lake Charlevoix, Glen Lake, etc., especially if it has passage to Lake Michigan). We're 3 blocks from the Pacific Ocean now. We see it daily from our windows. I don't "have to have" a view, but I have to be able to get there by walking. That's our life. This also drives up the cost of the property considerably, I've found. So a 5-acre farm with a great house 20 miles inland from Lake Michigan is a huge difference from one that's 1/4 mile away. We're willing to give up a great kitchen for that! - within very short drive/long walk to a village... something like Leland or Sutton's Bay, quaint but with a decent school, real necessities like grocery, bank, gas station, library, community center, at least one decent restaurant, a breakfast or coffee house type morning hangout, but not as big as TC or Charlevoix. - within 20 miles or so of a city center... T.C., Charlevoix - reasonable property taxes. Grand Traverse county is double of Leelanau... that's something to really consider for our retirement years. On our key list of specific property wants/needs: - buy existing house (DH's requirement, not mine, but I understand and respect his reasoning) - some fixing/changing/adding on is ok. - NOT a summer cottage. We want a home that was built as a year-round home. - My dream home would be an older farm house that someone else has already put the money to insulate, upgrade windows, etc. without totally ruining the integrity of the cool old features. I wouldn't mind having to gut a kitchen, or do extensive cosmetic work. - bonus points for separate hobby building(s), such as workshop, barn, greenhouse - has to have high-speed internet access - has to have good well (assuming it won't be on any city water based on our area criteria) - septic is ok, sewer is better - private road is ok as long as it's not too far off the main, is paved and the plowing costs are manageable - would love to have natural gas, but propane is ok (am I boring you yet with details?) I've got access to taar.com (the mls site for NW MI), so I'm getting a fair idea of what costs what. And because we started the search in Leland, I've got comps for everything that has sold in Leelanau county since January 2007, so I've got a good understanding of the state of things there, but not in other counties. In past years, I ruled out Harbor Springs. Too expensive, too pretentious... I don't know any of the villages/towns around Elk Lake, Torch Lake (east of the bay, south of Charlevoix). If you have any other areas you'd think would fit the bill, I'll start doing the research. And yes, we'll definitely be back up there soon (probably March/April) to really pound the pavement. Accessibility is good news. A gas dryer should be easy and will save you a lot in the long run if you don't use a solar-powered clothes dryer. A simple HWH heater will require a chimney which might be difficult. If you can invest in a high efficiency water heater, it might save you in the long run and you don't have to go above the roof. You'll have to run the numbers to decide if the lifetime costs merit it. You have forced air heat? I would like to move to induction. I have a plug-in hob that I use a lot. It saves me considerably in cooling costs in my hot-humid climate near the Gulf of Mexico. When I have time to do a kitchen remodel, I'd like to put in 2-3 induction hobs and one gas hob for the few things that induction will not work well for.

Any time you get a shock, which is what you're getting, it's serious. What if someone with a heart condition got a shock from your hot tub by just putting their hand in the water. Does the word "lawsuit" come to mind? This has nothing to do with the GFCI breaker. You can try to find the problem with a good voltmeter. Set the meter to V AC, on a low scale, say in the 50V AC range. By touching each metal part of the tub and the ground wire, something will show a voltage significantly different than the other voltages from the metal parts. That'll be the part of the tub that's not bonded correctly. It will do this even with the breaker off because the ground wire will contain voltage. Because all parts of the tub are not at that same ground voltage, current will flow, and a shock results when current flows from a higher voltage to a lower voltage. By having everything bonded, even though there is ground voltage in the bonding system, it's all at the same voltage and therefore no current will flow and there will be no shocks.

So, what happens if a person isn't happy with the transaction? Do they not leave any feedback at all?
It wouldn't seem right if everyone only receives positive--why then even bother having feedback?
That's the first thing I always looked for before purchasing--the seller's record.

EBay seems to be trying to eliminate some problems, but it seems to me they still haven't gotten it right.

I have some reading to do on the subject. Meanwhile, I bought myself some time because very few people had signed up for this class, and the librarian and I decided to reschedule it for later in the summer.

twinkle, the buyers can still leave feedback they way they always have. Now the sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers, or leave no feedback if they're unhappy with the buyer.

Yes, there have been lots of changes on ebay many of them not good, at least for the sellers. Sellers cannot leave negative feedback for people who don't pay, get the item then decide they don't want it and claim they didn't receive it at all unless the seller can prove delivery. And if the seller gets a negative or neutral from the buyer, it reduces the seller's performance ratings that makes his items fall to the bottom of the searches. The purpose of all this is for sellers to make darn sure that the buyer is happy with their purchase. Even so, if the buyer doesn't rate the seller with 5 stars (the best you can get for that transaction), the sellers feedback will suffer. Most buyers will not rate 5 stars on postage fees even if it is actual cost because nobody likes to pay the huge rate hikes we have been getting from the post office. So the seller gets penalized because the post office charges so much. So, to all prospective buyers: Give the seller a break and rate him 5 stars on everything unless he has grossly misrepresented the item or was late shipping (within 3 days is specified by ebay) or didn't answer your emails etc.
Most of the time, the buyers are honest decent folks so when they say they didn't get all their items, give them the benefit of the doubt. I recently had an experience with a large box of old magazines I shipped by media mail. The buyer said he didn't get but 5 or 6 magazines and the box was stuffed with some printed fabric to fill the void. Something happened somewhere down the line at the post office that the box was opened and many of the magazines were removed. God knows why or where they were put. But I have been receiving 3 or 4 old magazines almost every day for the past month that were part of that shipment because they still had the original shipping labels on them. I've been sending them to the buyer as we collect them. Fortunately the buyer was nice enough not to demand a refund. Thank goodness I had a delivery confirmation receipt. Nowadays, the seller has to protect himself by making sure he has a delivery confirmation or insurance to show it was delivered or you have to give the buyer a refund.
There are a lot of new rules regarding jewelry...fine jewelry or costume jewelry...the word diamond. It has to be a real diamond to use that word. Gold has to be real gold or you can't use that term.
If you are selling electronics, Paypal will withhold your money until the buyer gets the item and is satisfied with the item and leaves feedback for you.
Best to check the rules for each item in its category before you list it or ebay will yank your listing.
