cole slaw ? please

Glenda and others who have made it, did you use real mayo or did you use miricle whip? If real mayo, I need to know before I go to the store tomorrow afternoon, please! Thanks.

Here is the video link. It isn't a mayo-based dressing it is vinegar-based. It is a personal, made-up recipe so there is no way to know if it is safe or not for long term shelf storage. I would note that it is a small amount of liquid for the very large heads of cabbage used (and she left out the peppers and onions so it would be even more dense if those were added) and she heavily packed the jars which isn't recommended and then processed it in a steam canner for 15 mins. which wouldn't be considered safe either (and she admits to that). I like the KFC cole slaw, too. I found a similar, and for me, better tasting slaw at the Wegman's Kosher deli. I would suggest you google Kosher (style) mayo-less cole slaw and see what you come up with. Good luck.

Sometimes when you're hungry something you normally wouldn't care fo is unusually appealing or just "hits the spot". It doesn't sound from the description that it's anything unusual and you may well be making something similar or better. Every deli coleslaw I've ever had is fair at best. It's fast food. I usually doctor it up if I go with a deli slaw. Lately, I've even been using just a bottled salad dressing (Hidden Valley Farmhouse Bacon & Onion is very good) and slaw mix, add some dried onion (fresh if I have it), Spike seasoning and bacon bits, grapes if I have them, and have a vastly superior salad to any of the deli slaws. I can also make a smaller batch than my normal coleslaw too. If I want more of a vinegary type it's easy to sub an Italian dressing or mix some different types. Catalina mixes well as does Ranch. I wouldn't be surprised if you went and bought some of the coleslaw and served it up saying what do you think of this, the opinion may well be different. I'm not suggesting they're purposely dissing your slaw, but often the one-time extraordinary fizzles the next time. Taste buds are as consistent as the weather.

Would you mind if I changed the name to Hawaiian Cole Slaw so I can serve it at the luau I am planning? And I think I will use dried cherries. And maybe add a little pineapple. Thanks for the recipe.

CHINESE CABBAGE COLE SLAW

4 c. shredded Napa or celery cabbage
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 c. olive oil
2 tbsp. tarragon Vinegar
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
Paprika

Put the cabbage, onion and celery into a serving bowl. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, vinegar, sugar and salt. Pour over the cabbage. Mix well. Sprinkle the top with paprika. Serves four

Will let you know. I am making it for Sat. at a friends picnic. I'm also taking my mom's pineapple upside down cake. Dad hasn't had it in years, Joanne was making everything I thought of, and remembered mom's p. u. cake. Mom doesn't cook or bake anymore, and due to diabetes, hadn't made it in years before she quit cooking. It will be greatly enjoyed. May have to make a double batch!

Got my Helmans today. Hopefully the big grocery will have the almonds. I would have had to buy a bag with about 3 cups in it today where I stopped at a local market. They would have gone to waste if I bought that much.
