Summer time and sitting on the porch at nite time is so relaxing.

Am I the only one?

I went out this evening to watch the hummers..but ended up washing the patio floor and by then it was late so I came back in..I'll try tomorrow evening. They are so busy filling up before dark..so tiny and cute..you can hear their little wing buzzing..

The worst winter that I experienced was 1978-79. It snowed heavily the night before Thanksgiving and the ground was not clear until sometime in late March. We had several major storms that dumped heavy accumulations of snow and dealing with the snow became the major issue of the winter. I was a brand-new homeowner that year; the proud owner of a three story townhome in a development named "Bright Oaks". We bought an existing unit that had been built when the developer still had a conscience, so the buildings had been carefully positioned to preserve many of the large old oaks. As a result, our building had been slanted in relation to the street. Our neighbor in the far north end of the building could barely fit his enormous Cadillac in his driveway, but at the other end of the building we could park three full size cars end to end in our driveway. The south side of our driveway was a small hill with a lovely ancient oak atop it. The other side of the driveway was a narrow strip of lawn that we shared with our immediate neighbor. By the end of January, shoveling the driveway meant scooping up a shovel full of snow, walking the length of the driveway and then going down the street about 30 feet to a clear spot on the hillside, clear meaning that the snow wasn't already piled higher than your head. Then walk back to get the next scoop of snow. It was just a bit time-consuming! In mid-January I had to take the train to downtown Chicago on a Saturday morning for work. When I left home it had started snowing again, and the train station lot had not been plowed. I park legally on the street and headed downtown. By shortly after noon, it became obvious that the storm was so bad I should head home, so I left for the train station. A combination of heavy snow and bitter cold had disrupted even the commuter trains. The schedule was out the window and they were running on a "load and go" basis. Maybe that should read "load and stall"? What should have been a 90 minute trip took about four hours. Switches were freezing, the diesel engine would not run at full speed, and crossing gates acted up everywhere. As the trip took longer and longer and the snow got deeper and deeper, I began to wonder how I would ever get my car off the street, or more simply how I would get home at all. When the train finally pulled into my station, I was surprised to see my husband and our neighbor, the owner of the enormous Cadillac, come walking out of the trackside tavern. My husband had decided to come help me get the car out, but the neighbor saw him leaving and offered to drive instead, since the big old boat handled better in the heavy snow. (Note to younger readers: this occurred in a time before the existence of cell phones and SUV's. We did have electricity, though.) The two waited out the storm in the tavern until they heard the train come in. They had heard enough about the travel problems that day to know that I would be on THE train. I don't think I was ever so happy to see two people in my life! It took several hours the next day to excavate the car from its white tomb on Main Street, but we got the job done. Finally we came to the long-awaited day in early March when it was warm enough to melt a significant amount of snow. I came home to find the ceiling of my first floor entryway on the floor. An awful lot of homeowners learned all about ice dams that spring, as the damage became all too apparent in the thaw. We ended up with a new ceiling and a full paint job on two floors to repair the damage. Fortunately, our homeowners' insurance covered the damage. We've had colder weather, strong winds, heavy rains, you name it, but I still rate that winter as my worst weather experience ever. V.

Auntie live in assisted living,,,, absolutely not she would kill us all first. She has enough faculties and money to keep up with everyday living, a housekeeper,lawn boy and handyman do the hard stuff and hubby and I fill in getting groceries etc.We do NOT let her drive and we had to take away her checkbook as people were taking advantage plus she has a terrible case of the GIMMES Then one day she called my DH up and said a check had been returned and she had NO idea why when she did EVERYTHING right. Well we looked it over and said," Auntie why did you send them a check for 0 dollars and 0 cents? She said,"LOOK,,, right here it says amount you owe 0 dollars and 0 cents and I always pay EXACTLY what they tell me!" After that and a BRAND new security alarm being installed that she cannot use we took the checkbook away.She can be perfectly normal then switch to talk about her deceased husband and son and how they mow God and Jesus' lawn in heaven and she gave the heaven contractor 60,000 to build them a home up there and they had to use a helicopter to get the appliances in,heaven has two helicopters you know Then she will start on a casket being delivered to her front door with some guy named Girard and a naked woman having sex in it and on and on and then she snaps right back to reality and her normal nasty self. Honestly I like her better delusional! My dad loves his little place and people are so good to him. He has a great attitude.I live only minutes away and clean,do laundry shower,order meds and depends from the VA. I do not think we can afford assisted living for him. He Loves people and this p[lace has a lot of parties and functions put on by the catholic church. He would NOT be able to live there if I did not do for him and remind him to change depends etc. Any way the Social workers and VA and others have told us that they can live alone as long as they are NO threat to themselves or others. So we are sticking it out as long as possiible

Loretta sez:"I have a small flatscreen tv on the porch. So, one of my favorite things on sunday after church, is to sit on the porch and watch bad movies on the SyFy network!" Oh (groan) those old sci-fi movies were the worst. But at least you did not see too much gore like the newer monster movies have. I sure cannot watch those. Last night I found THE HOLIDAY, where the two young women swap houses for Christmas. It was full of eye candy for house lovers. I think it was my third time to see it. Now that we changed our phone system to cable, I got a lot more channels than before, and the cost is less than if I stayed with ATT phone service. I have yet to see the caller ID on the screen, but I'm sure it will show up when I figure out the settings. We're also getting some of the music channels, no spoken commercials (some text on screen but who watches music play?) I like the jazz, blues, classical, and less violent stuff. Nice. Sorry if I seem to stray off topic here. But sitting on a porch relaxing brings up such images. I think you are getting your money's worth from that porch, Loretta. I bet you have room for a glass of wine and a plate of snacks too.

There is likely a cold front that moved in that is making you cold. I, of course, do not know where you are, but here in the MidAtlantic we have had several colder than average days this summer. This morning and yesterday morning I had to reach for my robe. One day last week or so, I had to take a warm shower because I was cold. It does happen in the summer here, but not very often that we get a chilly day in the summer.

We don't have a front porch that we can sit on but we do spend a lot of time on the deck in our backyard watching the birds come to the feeders and listening to the fountain. Very relaxing.

I sat on my front porch early evening with my cat and the two visiting neighborhood cats, It was delightful Of course I had about three sticks of yard incense going

We spend most of our time on the patio out back. DH in his favorite chair and me in my swing...very relaxing!

Hubby and I sat out in the back yard (does that count...LOL). If I ever hit the lottery I told myself I'd build a nice cottage in the country with a wrap-around porch. I love to sit on the porch. The neighbors (the neighbors on both sides) came and sat with us for almost 2 hours. We watched the hummers and the cardinals and of course we re-told all those good stories of when we were all young'uns. It was just wonderful. We have such great neighbors....couldn't have done better if I'd hand picked them.....

Just before nightfall I was out scrubbing my porch. Not fun. I gotta do some more tomorrow because I didn't get all the mold off.

have a very big porch, and I love this one. It
is quiet here in my neighborhood at night.

I love porch sitting. I have a front and back porch and sit out most mornings and every evening. Can't sit on the back porch right now, as there is a birds nest on the light out there. Momma bird is awfully 'flighty' so we keep away. It will probably be another 2 weeks till her babies are ready to leave the nest.

I don't call our front deck a porch...because it doesn't have a railing or roof.
But, we do sit out in the evening, with Foxy in her cat run. Neighbors are out walking or bike riding , everyone waves...very alive and friendly.

I don't have a porch...yet, but I sit outside under the big oaks all the time. I just got a hammock too...and I am a little disappointed in it because it isn't as comfortable as the one I used to have, but I still manage to nap or just relax in it every day...usually with Zelda, my dog, and one or two of the cats. I am outside all day long, except when I come inside to pee and check email or feed the current baby possum.

I sit on the back porch more often than the front because it is screened in; besides that's where the flowers and bird feeders are as well as the dogs.

I love going out there early in the morning with a big glass of orange juice to read the paper and work the puzzles.

We have a small courtyard as you enter our house. The fence is wrought iron with brick columns for the gate. Part of it is private because of a Hibiscus plant and part is visible from the street. The best of both worlds. DH and LOVE sitting out there to read and enjoy a drink or snack.

And the best part is because of the Hibiscus, I've had hummingbirds actually stop to rest on my book as I am reading. That is wonderfully up close and personal and an amazing sight!

No that our backyard is finished I love to sit out and enjoy my surroundings. Last night Bobby and I went swimming and then sat on the patio and visited for awhile.

I enjoy sitting on my back deck. When I was in CA last week we ate dinner outside by the pool one night and something bit me several times.

Love my porches--front and back. Mainly sit on the screened back one. I like it just as it's getting light in the morning. That's peaceful to me.

We sit out in the back yard almost every Evening. If we are late in getting out the dogs start pestering us to go outside with them. They love to play "watch me, watch me". Spoiled rotten.

When its not to hot you'll find me sitting on our side porch. I have been a porch sitter all my life. When I lived in the city I sat on the front porch and watched the cars go by and talked to friends . Now I sit with my dogs or hubby but he goes to bed at 10:00 PM.

We have a deck across the front of our house and DH and I sit out there a lot.We are right on the Interstate and it can be pretty noisy but we enjoy it anyway.I have humming bird feeders hanging 3 feet from where I sit and the hummers go to the feeders and sometimes hover a few inches from my face.They are so cool.We love watching them.One afternoon DGD was sitting there with a can of cola.One little hummer flew over to it and tried to drink out of it.
We also have a grill out there and cook on it a lot year round when the weather is nice.

A couple years ago we built a new barn. I talked my hubby into putting a porch on. I bought a nice patio set and he uses it more then anyone. It faces the east and is shadowed by trees in the morning. So sweet........

Have a front coming thru tonite. No rain! Will be nice porch sitting for the next couple nites, and windows open in the evening. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
