electric pressure cooker?

I saw an ad on t.v. the other night (couldn't sleep...sigh) and they look pretty neat! They appear very safe and will keep the kitchen cool in the summer. Also, I like the idea of cooking food so fast. Does anyone have one? Do you like it? Any recommendations?

Love, love, love mine. Hope you didn't see it on a high-priced infomerical....I got mine about 4 or 5 years ago from Amazon around $70.

I have a small (4 qt) electric PC--it was a gift. I never use it. I GREATLY prefer the stovetop models. I have a 6 qt Kuhn Rikon and a Fagor 'Splendid' set with an 8 and a 4 qt pot with a lid that fits them both (about $99 on Amazon, $90 this week on Overstock). They work fine on induction (I have an induction hot plate and I've tested them) as well as gas. You can get a Fagor 10 qt 'Splendid' PC for $80 at Amazon or their 'Elite' for about $90...yes, that's not cheap but IMHO it's a quality item and worth the $$$. I doubt that you'll find an electric PC with that capacity for that price. I do a lot of pressure cooking, and I think Fagor is a very good value--and the models I've used work fine on either gas, electric or induction. Here is a link that might be useful: Fagor PC

I've thought a few times about a pressure cooker and came close to making the plunge a couple times. But then I started seeing how the speed is not quite what it's hyped up by the manufacturers. Cook in 20 min... OK, but they fail to mention it also takes 20 min or so to bring it up to pressure, then another what, 10-20 min to depressurize so the time savings isn't as significant. I didn't grow up with one and haven't been with anyone who uses a pressure cooker to know what the food is like so I don't know how I'd like it. The other concern I have is whether I'd clean it well enough. Seems to me you have to be pretty careful to disassemble and clean all the seals, valve and other parts of it thoroughly or it wouldn't seal properly. I've also read that the electric units don't build up the same pressure as a manual one so it would be longer to cook than an old fashioned one, although I would think I'd much prefer an electric unit. Lastly, can't quite justify the cost although I've seen that Aldi occasionally has a unit at a pretty reasonable price. I need to get more of an education on them to make a decision. I enjoy reading about peoples' experiences and thoughts on them. Have watched a lot of videos on them already!

dcarch, I've never had a problem using quick release on my Fagor multi-cooker when pressure cooking. It has a fill line in it, I've never over filled it. They cool down so quickly though compared to my heavy stove top types that I can in. I think I sat in my office maybe 15 minutes at very most after the 'finished' beep sounded on mine tonight (it resets to hold warm automatically), then went in to add the spinach to my dish and get dinner on the table...no prolonged hiss when I turned the valve. I used it tonight on a dinner I'd planned to oven or slow cook and never did get into the kitchen...one of those kind of days. Chicken + chicken broth, sausage, butter beans, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, onion, white wine, into the pressure cooker while I folded last load of laundry. (I short cutted the beans and used canned, added those at the end just to heat at the same time I put in a pile of fresh spinach leaves). If my vent were to ever plug and it has not in the years I've had the electric pressure cooker (kind of forgotten, something like 7+?), it would be easy enough to clean. I run water through it when I'm washing up each time anyway, make sure it is free and open.

No. It's a Cajun family tradition around my area. We are having sweet-potato casserole with praline topping, and Cajun dirty rice (rice dressing), gravy which is put on the rice and turkey. Green been casserole and Broccoli salad which a guest is bringing. And desserts, and rolls. Another guest is bringing her special Cranberry sauce.

Thanks for the information. The one I saw was Wolfgang Pucks. I think it was around $100. What size do you all have? We have one son left at home but sometimes do cook for a bunch. Was thinking of a 6-7 quart.

I have several pressure cookers and they are so nice when you need to cook something quickly or to tenderize. Mine are not electric but if I needed a pressure cooker, I'd certainly like to have an electric. You can probably buy one just as good and cheaper without his name attached.

Ranch girl, that is the one I have and tho I am quite sure Ruthie is right, I would buy it again. I love it! Mine is an older generation than the one he has out now, or at least the one I saw him promoting this past weekend. I love all the settings, I use it to steam nearly as often as I use it as a pressure cooker. I really do love having it to depend on. I thought that I would only use it in the winter but I often use in in summer to avoid heating the house, and I even take it to camp with us!

6 or 7 quart size sounds good to me. Not 5 quart....too small. They really only hold about HALF that amount because you have to leave some "air space" for the pressure.

Thanks joyful for bringing this around again! I ended up buying the electric one and I really like it. Can't believe how fast it cooks a whole chicken for chicken salad or soup. Also, tried some less tender steaks with a sauce and 15 min. later, supper was ready. Also, it doesn't heat up the house :)

I love my pressure cooker I use on the stove. Makes the best mashed potatoes. I wouldn't give it up for anything. I lost the pressure top once, ordered another from the company (Mirro or Presto?) , found the original, now have two.
