Portland Oregon question

How long do you feel we can stay entertained in Portland???

Looking for two more day trips to take from there~~~already have Tillamook picked out, Trinitytx mentioned Mt Hood.

We have two weeks to be out and about~~I am thinking 3-4 nights up and back, but 6 days maybe to long in Portland??? DH will not do the coast up or back~~he is a been there done that kinda guy.

Last year we went to Flagstaff for a week that was easy to plan this is getting complicated for me:( What to do??

Haven't been there for a few years, but I recommend a drive out rt 26 to Seaside,OR.
When I used to go to Beaverton, I always left a day open to drive out there...beautiful beach town, fantastic Pacific ocean beach.

Only a little over an hour's drive from Portland...through timber country. The ride itself is enjoyable.

One of my top 5 beaches in the US.

I live close to Portland. We have a great Zoo, shopping, beautiful rose gardens, and a ton of other stuff. Not sure what type of things you are interested in.

"Sweet" and "Eversweet" supposedly produce fruit that is sweet even when underripe (...). They do not, however, look like traditional poms, with "Eversweet" having colorless or nearly colorless (but non-staining!) juice. Also not bright red on the outside. I haven't tasted them but some who like poms consider these insipid. Raintree suggests both of these for "cool-summer" climates. Planting them against a south-facing wall might help ("Sweet" is supposed to be a compact plant good for containers or espalier). Seems to me you might call Raintree and see what they recommend. You might also check around and see if anyone in your general area actually grows poms. It might be a stretch.

Fall is the best time to fertilize, not winter. Grass farmers like to apply 3/4 of their nitrogen in the fall and 1/4 in the spring. Have you watered or has it rained an inch in the past month? If not you could go ahead and water. Monthly watering in the cooler months is a good idea to keep the soil healthy. If your grass is just dry and it comes back, and assuming you want to fertilize this spring, you don't need to fertilize until after you have mowed the grass two times. This ensures you are fertilizing the grass and not just the winter weeds. If you want to use an organic fertilizer, you can fertilize three weeks prior to your local "last frost" date.

You might check out Huggy Bear Cupboards. They're in Portland. We almost used them (we're in the SF Bay Area and they have a couple of dealers here) since we wanted painted Shaker-style inset cabinets, and they were the most competitive price we found except for the custom guy we finally went with. I've only seen their frameless cabinets---none of the showrooms here had the inset---but they seemed well made, and they use good hardware (Blum full-extension standard on the inset). They're technically semi-custom, not custom---mainly this matters b/c if you don't like the paint colors they offer, I don't know if they will do a custom paint job. But as far as sizes, they were willing to build everything in our totally crazy kitchen plan.

Yesterday I saw a British gardening program where the well know author and TV presenter Monty Don was visiting a large perennial garden where this plant was being cultivated in the border. He had never seen it before. I fear the garden owner is in for an unpleasant surprise down the road!

The Portland Zoo is one of the best in the country IMO.

A day trip up the coast to Astoria is a must. You'll also call through Seaside. Astoria a beautiful little town where the Columbia River meets the sea.Awesome. Nice little maritime Museum there. Come back by way of the Columbia river or continue East to Hood River.

Take drive east of Portland on the south side of the Columbia river. That's where the waterfalls are. They come tumbling down Mt. Hood and eventually fall over the edge of the Columbia river gorge. A few of these sites have hiking trails where you can trace a stream up the cliftside. There are many photo-ops. You will recognize having seen many of these scenes on post cards and calendars. These falls are at their best during the wet season.

West of Portland, there are many nice views on the seacoast and quaint little towns.

The Cascade mountains are scenic. Go for a picnic atop of Mt. Larch.

There is a new visitor's center on Mt. St. Helens. That is within a day trip from Portland and educational. If you go, be sure to take in the slide show in the auditorium. The end of the show is spectacular.

I was going to suggest Mt St. Helens. I was most surprised at the different visitor centers going up to the Mountain. All wonderful. And the Weyerhouser (OMG how do you spell it?) center, which we almost passed up, is a must see...think it is first one. The highway and bridges and the millions of trees that they have planted is astonishing, as well as the massive amounts of "mother earth" that was moved. It is a one day trip that is well worth it.

Just to add....if you are there around the 15 of July, Mt Hood college has the Quaintest Highland Games...with the gathering of the clans in the evening that is so much like the games we went to in the little villages in Scotland. It always brings back sweet memories. And don't fail to purchase raspberries from the local berry stands....you will never taste better berries.

Yamhill Wine Country, Multnomah Falls, The Columbia Gorge, Portland Farmers Market, Fort Vancouver, OMSI, love the new gondola too! Ther Pearl District, and Voodoo Donuts. IKEA! Want me to keep going? How about Camp 18 logging museum restaurant on HWY 26? Spirit Mountain Casino is about 1 hour away and HUGE. There is LOTS to do in the Portland area.

yep, Powells is the best book store I've ever been to. I always end up spending hours there and coming out with tons of books. Definitely go to a coastal town, Astoria or one of the many others. You could always drive a few hours up here to Seattle too if you have 6 days.
