She's my age. She looks good, but I hope she child-proofs her house to the max. I suspect she won't have the energy to keep running after him when he hits toddlerhood.....

The trick is to get them something to plant that isn't boring. For boys, hot peppers are a good way to go. Even the manliest of men (or boys that think they are manly men) will stop to dig in the dirt if it means they end up with the world's hottest pepper they can use to dare their friends with. For girls, try odd colored fruits. Pink blueberries, white watermelons, or purple cauliflower. For both, highly unusual fruits and veggies can do the trick as well. Kiwano melons are absolutely BIZARRE looking, and that makes them fun to grow. The trick is to not try and get them interested in the gardening at first, but in the end product. Just make sure its something you can't buy in the grocery store that still looks fascinating so you can pull the "Well, the only way you will ever get to try one of these is if you grow your own." deal. By the time they actually get fruit, the bait and switch will be done and they'll (hopefully) enjoy the gardening for it's own sake.

WOW!!! I know that was a hard thing to do. I kept waiting for the Polydamas butterflies to find my calico vine but they didn't touch it this year. It took me a while to finally give in and cut back one of the vines that had latched onto a light pole on the other side of my fence. That one worked it's way up to the top of the pole and it was covering the transformer - figured I better cut it down before it caused a power outage!!! Have yet to cut back my yellow morning glory vine though...that one has covered two 16 foot long fence panels, covered a 10 foot tall pony palm and worked its way up into my neighbor's oak tree :o) That's what he gets for allowing the branches hang over into my yard :o) ~ Cat

'67-Year-Old Spanish Woman Gives Birth to Twins Following In Vitr
Q

I won't comment much on this woman's situation as I don't know the details. What I will comment on is how it really disturbs me to see the occasional misuse of the system get prime coverage. It casts a negative pall over what is a godsend to a great many people--the ability to have children when reproductive failures occur. This woman is well past the age of acceptance for most (all?) American clinics, but managed to sneak through the system by being dishonest. Unfortunately, in many people's minds it then becomes wrong for clinics to offer such services at all. It leads to attempts to limit or eliminate certain fertility treatments (current push for this in Virginia, among other states). I do feel it was wrong of this woman to lie, and I think 67 is too old. However, I don't claim to know how to determine what age clinics should use as the cutoff for such IVF procedures, nor am I really qualified to judge this woman's actions. We all age so differently, both internally and externally. I am way outside the norm, having had a completely natural (and surprise) pg and birth at age 44. Wishing to give our dd a sibling, we tried again and were successful--until a m/c ended our hopes. And again. And again. And so on. So we turned to a fertility clinic and got our beautiful twins, born when I was 47. Was it morally wrong? I don't think so, but others would disagree. I don't think any of us can really judge such a thing for another. In all honesty, I think the woman in question did not act in the best interests of her children-to-be. My own opinion is that one must be honest and act in the best interests of ALL parties involved. If she feels she did that, then I won't nay-say her, though I admit to doubts :)

Yet Another Rash...I can't believe it...
Q
Comments (18)
Oh you poor thing. I can relate to the red itchy rash. I developed one over two years ago on my elbows and forearms. It then spread to my knees. This itch was so intense that I wanted to keep scratching even though my skin was raw. First I was diagnosed with psoriasis (wrong) - then after waiting 6 months to see a dermatologist I was diagnosed with Dermatitis Herpetiformis. This rash is associated with Celiac Disease. I do not have Celiac Disease. Went through blood tests, endoscopies, colonoscopies, biopsies. All which showed no Celiac and the biopsy came back as folliculitis. Inflammation of the hair follicles. This Dermatologist put me on a pill called Dapsone. This pill was prescirbed years ago to people with Leprosy. Well, I thought I died and went to heaven when I first started taking this med. The rash disappeared - no more itching. However, two years later my bones ache, my joints ache not to mention I am so badly anemic. I feel like I'm 100! I'm told this is all because of the Dapsone. I have asked to see another Dermatologist. Remember I live in Canada. I received the referral in January/08 and my appt. is scheduled for October 28/08. Nothing like waiting 10 months. Don't feel too bad - 1 week is nothing, although it seems like forever when there is discomfort!!

That is just wrong! What are the chances that she will even see the child to age 20? God makes a natural cut off for childbearing...menopause!

I have just one question. Why? What would possess someone to do this at that age? I am in my 40's and can not even conceive (pardon the pun) of having a baby right now. I just don't get it. I wish her nothing but the best, but wow. Just wow.

I must agree with all of the above. I love being a gramndmother at 52 but
no thank you not a full time parent. I love my life just the way I have it now.
More power to her and yes I feel sorry for the baby.

Omigosh, Jane, that's funny but it's also in the realm of possibility! One of a slew of reasons why she really shouldn't be doing this.

There will probably be a huge generation gap between mom and son. Gosh, also she will be in her 90's!! when he graduates from college and suffering from... (i want to put it mildly) demise. (sorry)

In my opinion, it is just another example of the, I want...I want it NOW...me, me, me, mind set we see so often. Obviously this woman had not thought of little, beyond having the baby. Not,, that she will probably not being around to see it grow up, graduate, or that she is cheating the child's children of having a grandmother. There is a time and a season for everything, and childbearing should be done by those who can, in all probability, see the job to completion. (Raising the child to adulthood) JMO, Dottie

I think that was very irresponible of the Dr who performed the IVF,also very unfair to the child.I just dont understand it.I would also worry about her mental status.

Gotta ditto all of the above replies...geeze!

I think it's sad enough and tough when grandparents end up raising their own grandkids...my heart goes out to those folks.

However, I have no sympathy or understanding for this 66 yr. old woman!

Oh, I don't know. Think about this. She raises it to age, let's say, 10 or 12 and then has a built-in caretaker in her dotage. This is wrong on soooo many levels.

My thinking is on target with Dots... this is completely selfish!
chisue

OK, how old is TOO old? I'm pleased to see that so many posting here are looking at this as unfair to the child.

Recently a single forum member of 40+ posted, wondering if it was feelings of 'last chance' or if she really wanted to have a baby with her 50-ish male friend. I got flamed for looking at this as less than fair to a child.

Things happen. Sometimes children are born to less-than-optimum-age parents (young and old). It feels different when someone *deliberately* creates a human life (s)he will almost certainly be unable to parent long or well. In addition, the child in the OP has no father to parent him -- and will never know who his father was.

At a reputable adoption agency -- one where a child's best interest IS put first -- a 66-year-old parent wanting to adopt an infant would have to have a 14-year-old partner to meet the "Combined Age of 80 or Less" rule!

Hey, after bottlefeeding five kittens for a week I wouldn't get in the "impregnate me now" line, I can tell ya that! LOL
jannie

If she wanted something to love, a kiten or puppy would have been more appropriate. I had my kids at 35 and 36, I considered it just the outside boundary of being a new mother. Two kids within 14 months took a tremendous amount of energy.

I grew up with older parents who tried hard but couldn't keep up with us twins. We were the 6th & 7th children. I definitely think this 66 year old has been selfish, and the child will pay the price.
