How about just leaving the screen off until you figure out how to catch the squirrel.

Is the screen metal? I mean not that soft stuff, I don't really know what screening is now days but seems too soft.
What about putting moth balls on the windowsill?
Or covering it with some of the more meshy strong stuff, like the chicken wire only squares? Then later replace the screen?

If there are no children or pets in the area, you might try decon. It could kill the squirrel, but if an animal ate the dead squirrel, nothing would happen.

Leave it off or put a grill, chicken wire, or the rubber coated green metal garden fencing over the screen.

My husband says it's that metal meshy stuff. That's a good idea about the chicken wire...

Someone also suggested something like decon, also.

Buy some urinal pucks and place a couple on the sill. THe squirrel will not like the smell! We got rid of a skunk under our shed this way. They are generally too big for a squirrel to pick up and move.

Some what? What are they, Mush? Where do you get them?

Have you discussed this with the land lord? It must surely not be the first time this has happened. He should have some suggestions.

We are the landlord. Well, my son is, and we've been helping him out. What happened was, the squirrel made a nest between the windows and the old tenants thought that was cute, and let him stay there all winter. We found out when they were moving out. That squirrel thinks we're being unreasonable.

I think the urinal pucks Mush mentioned are those scented deodorizers for toilets.

Well, I can certainly throw a couple of those on the sill with the Critter Ridder.

moth balls are a deterent as well. lay they all over the window sill and it should keep them at bay. you can lay them loose or in mylons.

we had one that chewed through the side extensions on a window airconditioner, and this is what kept them away.

if you can manuever the trap, perhaps sideways and set back a little from the ledge, with of course, wood or something to block the sides, you might be able to trap the squirrel, but like you mentioned, who knows if it's the same one. you might have to do this for a week or so straight.

the only other suggestion would be pine sol soaked rags. or get a "pet" hawk. that's a sure way to keep these rodents away.

I would try the urinal things but please don't kill the squirrel. It's not his fault the other people let him live there. I have a pet squirrel I raised on a bottle and I love to watch him and his buddies in the yard. .

Yes urinal pucks are the things that are thrown into the urinals to keep the odour down! They look just like a white hockey puck. Come on down to St. Catharines and I'll sell you some! :) You get them at Sanitation supply companies. Moth crystals might work, but moth balls will just be carted away by the squirrel. He won't be able to pick up the crystals as easily.
Another thing you can try if nothing else works is, Hot Sauce. If he gets it on his paws, he will lick them and then hopefully move to a more inviting place!

I'd be the annoying tenant who would invite the squirrel to come in when it got really cold. lol

No advice, just agreeing with lily in that I hope you don't use poison to get rid of the little booger.

You could remove the screen, keep the window closed and let him stay. :o) I bet it would be neat to watch tiny cute baby squirrels being raised.

Oh, no way. I can't have the squirrel living in the windows of the house, it's dirty and disgusting. It just STANK when I evicted him the last time. And also, there's no a/c in the house. It would be like an oven in there with the windows closed.

'Tanglefoot' (a bird deterrent) works. Call arund to sporting goods, pet or big box stores to see if they have it.
