Squirrel Problems

Hello forum:

I'm very happy to join this forum after lurking in the background for a while. I've become an official "Hostaholic" the last year or so. So far I have several varieties including Paradigm, On Stage, Sum & Substance, Climax, Aphrodite, Eskimo Pie, Northern Exposure, A Many Splendored Thing, Francis Williams, Francee, Patriot, Paul's Glory et al. I have some questions to ask the members: 1)What do you do to avoid squirrels from digging around the hosta roots? I have to go everyday & replace the earth & the mulch around almost all the hostas. What are they looking for around the roots? I've tried dried blood, pepper powder, but that just worked temporarily. Also, and this is moving away from this subject: anybody has any experience using Benzylaminopurine on their hostas and/or Gibberlins? I anxiously await your responses.

Regards,

Luis
