We are flooding here in Texas

One of my neighbors called me hysterically, and within 10 minutes two more came over. They all know I am home, and all live across the street. We have so much rain between last night and almost all day today, it is awful. All the homes across the street have at least 3 inches of standing water in them.

I have sent every single towel and blanket I own across the street to help out. Sadly I don't own a dry vac.

I told them to call the fire department for sand bags.

Another large storm is on it's way tonite.

Oh, and yes, I brought Buffy in this morning, she was soaked to the bone and scared to death of the thunder and lightning.

Hope the rain somehow doesn't come. How awful to have a flooded home! Is yours in danger? Glad Buff was safe and dry.

I am really lucky to be on the other side of the street.
We have a large drain in front of our house, and we live on the down side towards the lake in the back.
In 20 years here, not once a flood in the house.
Most of the insurance for the other houses do not cover them.
It really has been an awful day in the neighborhood.
With Nita and her DH headed this way, I hope they are safe. I have emailed her, but have not heard back.

Texas is just not well set up for this kind of water.

We made a list last night - what we can't do without - books, pictures, computer, clothes, the wonderful little hand washing machine and spin dryer. And then a list of the stuff we really want but are afraid we can't fit in that we will leave with the sons until we can rescue it. Bruce is such a planner. Already thinking about grass that needs to go for new beds for flowers - he loves native wildflowers (he used to have a nursery and seed catelogue that sold only Colorado natives) and he is researching Texas natives. We have come to the realization that in the beginning that the house and yard must be put in immediate shape which means we hire someone or he does it. It's kind of hard on his male thang "I must be the bread winner" but the logical side of us knows that since for years he was a contractor and a nurseryman that it makes no sense for us to hire someone - that is his job. I was there at Christmas and it looks to me like it will take at least a month just to get that house clean enough for us to feel comfortable in it not to mention the yard. He has a HUDGE job in front of him and I thank God every day that I found someone who has the same ideas and dreams that I do - comfortable home, wonderful garden, food from our own place - Some people never realize that the basic comforts in life are what count - warm in winter, cool in the summer, good home grown food to eat and enough to eat and a GARDEN to sooth your soul. WHAT MORE IN LIFE COULD ANYONE ASK FOR.

Scott, I check it often, too, while longing for some real rainfall that will put some significant moisture back into the ground. This morning, the QPF is looking better than ever. I cannot get Tim to buy into the idea that we will get as much rain as the QPF shows. Too many times we have gotten our hopes up based on the QPF and then gotten little to no rain. It is disappointing when it predicts several inches and then all we get is a few hundredths of an inch. I have a good feeling about the rainfall for the next 7 days. I really feel like the rain will fall heavily like they are saying it will. It must fall. We need it so desperately. As much as we need rain, I would willingly go without rain the next 7 days if it would mean that the rain forecasted for our county would fall on Woodward and Logan counties and put a firm end to those wildfires. There was an old saying where I grew up in Texas that said "It takes a flood to end a drought ". Well, in that sense , I am hoping for a flood. No one is likely to get enough rain from one rainy week to end the current drought (like Love County did on April 29, 2009), but that won't stop me from hoping and believing we just might get enough rain during the next week to at least keep the drought conditions from worsening. I'm going to drag my rain boots out of the closet and put them by the back door just in case. I cannot even remember the last time I wore rain boots in the garden. Dawn

I added some pictures to the link above. Tomme, I hear ya! I'm so glad we finally got some sunshine today. I hope it holds for a while! Wooderlander, WHOA! How terrifying (and infuriating in the case of the driver of your car, LOL). I'm so glad you escaped unscathed - every week we read about someone in the area who ended up in an irrigation canal or something and died. I have even gotten a little paranoid about it and have been trying to figure out how I would get the kids out of my van if we ever ended up in water. I really don't know and it is such a horrid thought. And wow, that tree!! It's a miracle no one was hurt and no houses or cars were crushed. pauline, thanks for the well wishes! bunglogirl, I *hate* power outages. How did you get through 3 days of it? Thankfully, we never lost power. I can understand how your dh feels - I get annoyed with anything that disrupts my routine, but then you get some perspective when you think about hurricane victims or the miners' families. pecanpie, what a sweet thing to say! It really cheered me up to read how you found this area beautiful. You can come visit whenever you want :) Bill, thanks for the prayers. We get this kind of thing periodically and hey, it's California. If you don't have a flood year there are plenty of other disastrous possibilities :) I do hope the prediction is wrong, but from what I've read of the scientific experts' comments, I'm afraid Sylvia Brown is probably right. proudmama, thank you for your thoughts! We're all just fine and quite lucky to actually be able to enjoy the spectacle in comfort. jerzeegirl, those waves are amazing, and even more amazing is that the surfers have been flocking to them. That's nuts!!! Well, it is to me, anyway. I appreciate everyone's comments very much and hope you are all safe and dry. I feel overly dramatic posting pictures of our little flood when so many others have experienced events of a magnitude I can't even imagine.

Generally with flooding of the type you experienced there is more than just H2O in the water. Many times there is sewage mixed in. It really doesn't mater if the motors and wire appear to be dry now. They were never intended/designed to be under water. As mentioned above corrosion will, and already has, started happening. It might be a year or so before the appliance come to full failure though. You could get lucky and nothing will happen. If the insurance company is refusing replacement of the appliances ask them for a Whole House Warranty for 5 years that covers all the appliances against failure.

In my part of Texas it is extremely dry. We could sure use some of the rain, but definitely don't want the flooding. I'm glad that you have good drainage so your home isn't in danger.

Trinity, where do you live? We live in the Bandera area and are in a stage 1 drought. I am glad you are safe, and wish you could send some rain our way.

I'm in Kerrville and we could use some rain too. A friend over in the Bastrop area said there is a big storm headed his way.

I am in a small city just inside of Fort Worth. We got hit hard last night, and I rained for about 6 hours today.
Not rained, but buckets of water.
I just feel awful for the families here.
Haltom City is a low area, and when it gets this bad, many are flooded and homeless for many days.
I remember a family lost a small child last year to swollen waters and flooding. Water in these conditions is nothing to mess with.

We had over 4 inches of rain today. The storm started about 3 a.m. and we had rain, lightening & loud thunder most of the day. We're happy to have water in the lake.

Sorry people had to suffer flooding! I hope it subsides tonight for everyone affected.

I'm so sorry y'all are dealing with that. Stay safe. I know that when we flood here in the Houston area, it's awful, and often people die. I wish that rain could have been distributed a bit better -- we're in a bad drought here and would have welcomed a few inches of it coming further south!

Oh boy, Trin, that kinda rain is just scarey. And there you go again, lending a helping hand.

Y'all are lucky to not get the flooding as your neighbors do. And little Buffy is lucky to have you and your home as a soft and dry place to fall. :)

Send some rain to Amarillo..we could use more these days.
