The Kitchen Table

Here I am at the Bronx Zoo (1 pic), and.......

.....I'm going back in August! My DD and her family and I just reserved six seats for a bus trip to the Bronx Zoo. She and my granddaughter and I did this trip quite a few years ago, and had a great time. I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm a little concerned about my back pain possibly limiting my ability to walk around for hours on end, but we shall see.

Here I am at the Bronx Zoo's Children's Zoo a very long time ago. This is the Guinea Pig Castle, which no longer exists, I'm afraid. Fortunately, I still do. I'm thinking I may be holding onto a fence this time too. :-)

Glad you explained the setting, I thought perhaps that little girl was the spawn of Gulliver. (as in Gulliver's Travels) :-)

LOL I like the small font! One of my DH's favorite books, but it never did a thing for me. Not only am I not Gulliver's spawn, I don't think he's even a distant relative. :-)

I don't have any advice for you as aphid problems are rare in my garden and knock on wood, never anywhere near as severe as you have experienced. If pesticides have not worked for you then I recomend not using them anymore as they are very effective at killing aphid predators. That's the cruel irony of pesticides (broad spectrum ones anyway). One uses them to kill something and it may or may not kill that something, but it also kills the predators and then some bug not affected by the pesticide sets up shop and explodes it's population. If you are using soap sprays are you using an actual insecticidal soap or a dish 'soap' that may not really be soap? If you are using anything not labeled as an insecticidal soap please stop. Too much potential for plant problems. It's probably too late this year, but battling them with very short lived, on contact only pesticides like insecticidal soaps or even sharp water sprays *may* be of benefit down the road. Predators populate slower than pests so there is some truth in saying the pest population has to be present for awhile to give the predators a chance to move in and set up shop. Anyway, good luck and happy growing. It can be frustrating at times, but gardening is definitely one of those things where it's more about the journey than the destination.

Nice tour of the neighborhood! I've never been to Iowa, but it does remind me a lot of Upstate NY and PA. What time of day did you take these pics? Looks very nice and quiet. Usually mornings and evenings are the worst here because of the people commuting and there's always road work being done which adds to the traffic! That mansion is beautiful! Whoever lives there is very rich, thats for sure! I always like to see some dawn redwoods, they look really nice, but I rarely see them at big sizes around here since most people have to cut them down because they plant it close their homes or run out of room, or something like that. Thanks for sharing! -Alex

I will try to ID some of your question plants: #104 is a Ficus dammeropsis (as is #82); First large philodendron is Evansii, the second is bipinatifidium; #99 palm is Parajubaea torralyi; Dioon in first cycad photo is meijae, and others are actually ferns I think (Blechnum gibbums); first 'cactus' is indeed a Euphorbia ammak, I think; and second 'cactus' is Alluaudia procera; #11 is a bottle tree or Brachychiton rupestris; the palms you called European Fan palms (can't recall number, if any) are Nannorhops (not European, but Iranian); #57 is Dioon merolae; photo #50 is a Caryota, but not sure what species... something a bit unusual as it does not appear to be a gigas or a urens; never heard of the name Macraw palm... those are Rhopalostylis (Nikau palms I have heard them called) from New Zealand; Hawaiian native succulents are Brighamia insignis; ficus close up #30 is Ficus lyriata; #35 and 33 etc. are Brachychiton discolor; #23 I think is Trithrinax campestris; #14 is Chamaedorea tepejilote; all the Staghorns in all your photos are Platycerim bifurcatum, though they do have nice examples of superbum at that zoo (just no photos of them above); Palm in last palm photo is a Pritchardia, but no clue what species.

I can vouch that Kate's kitchen (along with the entire house!) is even more gorgeous in person than it is in the pictures! Her kitchen is my favorite by far (including my own, which I love dearly). And that bathroom....there are no words for how stunning it is. The tile she chose is absolutely perfect for her countertops and the feel of the room and it's going to be a design home run. It is, as bee said, an excellent backup singer. I had never seen that sparkly grout before and it is fascinating. I shouldn't say sparkly because it sounds too My Little Pony and it's not like that at all; it's a hint of sparkle, just enough to intrigue the eye. Anyway, we had a great time; Kate's just as much fun IRL as she is here online. I am looking forward to a return trip to see it all finished!

You were a cutie! Can you imagine any child at the zoo wearing a pretty dress today? Bet they are a lot more comfy than we were back in the day, but those sundresses were adorable. Mom had to iron it, too.

My mom probably made it! But judging from the look of my shoes, I gave my clothes a workout. :-)

hey don't be shy and get a w.chair and enjoy yourself! that back pain can be a "bummer" (replace with stronger word, lol) love the dress and hair...

too bad it's not the san diego zoo...they have a bus ride around the park that allows you to see about 80-90% of the park and then shorter walk to the primates, children's petting and snakes(yuck)....i always encourage people to take it...

LOL Maire......I'm having trouble envisioning my very tall, athletic son-in-law in a pinafore. Maybe if I eliminated the ruffles......
