Here I am at the Bronx Zoo (1 pic), and.......

.....I'm going back in August! My DD and her family and I just reserved six seats for a bus trip to the Bronx Zoo. She and my granddaughter and I did this trip quite a few years ago, and had a great time. I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm a little concerned about my back pain possibly limiting my ability to walk around for hours on end, but we shall see.

Here I am at the Bronx Zoo's Children's Zoo a very long time ago. This is the Guinea Pig Castle, which no longer exists, I'm afraid. Fortunately, I still do. I'm thinking I may be holding onto a fence this time too. :-)

Glad you explained the setting, I thought perhaps that little girl was the spawn of Gulliver. (as in Gulliver's Travels) :-)

LOL I like the small font! One of my DH's favorite books, but it never did a thing for me. Not only am I not Gulliver's spawn, I don't think he's even a distant relative. :-)

Sherry, my MJP is doing very well. She's still small, and I've had only one bloom from her, but it was lovely. Cream and apricot and pink all washed together. She seems quite healthy and is currently putting out new growth - I think she is just a quiet little aristocrat who doesn't take giant strides, just little dainty steps. Another small rose that I got even later last year is really leaping ahead, and has given two flushes already (only two blooms each flush, though!). But I don't hold that against MJP - they are just different from each other. I am also facing the problem of less sun this year (the trees have grown), so I have been moving them all around for maximum exposure. Also I'm repotting the ones most in need of it, one at a time (I'm not known for my stamina), and this has helped the ones that have been done. Nice tour of the neighborhood! I've never been to Iowa, but it does remind me a lot of Upstate NY and PA. What time of day did you take these pics? Looks very nice and quiet. Usually mornings and evenings are the worst here because of the people commuting and there's always road work being done which adds to the traffic! That mansion is beautiful! Whoever lives there is very rich, thats for sure! I always like to see some dawn redwoods, they look really nice, but I rarely see them at big sizes around here since most people have to cut them down because they plant it close their homes or run out of room, or something like that. I will try to ID some of your question plants: #104 is a Ficus dammeropsis (as is #82); First large philodendron is Evansii, the second is bipinatifidium; #99 palm is Parajubaea torralyi; Dioon in first cycad photo is meijae, and others are actually ferns I think (Blechnum gibbums); first 'cactus' is indeed a Euphorbia ammak, I think; and second 'cactus' is Alluaudia procera; #11 is a bottle tree or Brachychiton rupestris; the palms you called European Fan palms (can't recall number, if any) are Nannorhops (not European, but Iranian); #57 is Dioon merolae; photo #50 is a Caryota, but not sure what species... something a bit unusual as it does not appear to be a gigas or a urens; never heard of the name Macraw palm... those are Rhopalostylis (Nikau palms I have heard them called) from New Zealand; Hawaiian native succulents are Brighamia insignis; ficus close up #30 is Ficus lyriata; #35 and 33 etc. are Brachychiton discolor; #23 I think is Trithrinax campestris; #14 is Chamaedorea tepejilote; all the Staghorns in all your photos are Platycerim bifurcatum, though they do have nice examples of superbum at that zoo (just no photos of them above); Palm in last palm photo is a Pritchardia, but no clue what species.

Congradulations Dona, We are building new with an old house design, but it's not the same. It's always been a dream of mine to completely renovate an 1800's or older home incorporating new materials that you dont see,(such as electrical, plumbing,insulation,etc), and reproducing the woodwork and astethics to it's original form. In other words, bring it back to life. If you have a recycled building supply in or around your area, they often have period materials such as doors, mouldings, sinks,etc. that often times were used in the days of your home when it was new.I've also heard mention of some window mfg's that make period reproduction products that look original, but are way more energy efficient. Maybe someone out there can give you a link.Im an old hippie carpenter that has a great passion for vintage homes. We are building in an old logging town in the sierra nevada's , where working on some 1800's homes might turn into a reality. Best of luck and have great fun working on your "baby". You were a cutie! Can you imagine any child at the zoo wearing a pretty dress today? Bet they are a lot more comfy than we were back in the day, but those sundresses were adorable. Mom had to iron it, too.

hey don't be shy and get a w.chair and enjoy yourself! that back pain can be a "bummer" (replace with stronger word, lol) love the dress and hair...

too bad it's not the san diego zoo...they have a bus ride around the park that allows you to see about 80-90% of the park and then shorter walk to the primates, children's petting and snakes(yuck)....i always encourage people to take it...
