I decided to just buy a new digital camera

My previous post about how to download pictures overseas got me to thinking about battery life and my Kodak. It has a rechargable lithium battery that doesn't stay charged for very long. Lauren took it on a field trip a few weeks ago and it died long before she even got home. There's no way to recharge it unless the camera is sitting in the charging dock.

So, I sat here reading on-line about a few different cameras and went to Wal-Mart and bought a Kodak Powershot A1100IS, pink-the only color they had in this model. It's different than the one I had orginally planned to get but that one only had the display model left. This one is a 12.1 megapixel instead of 10 and has a 4x zoom, which is the same as the other one.

I also got a battery charger, extra batteries, an 8 GB memory card and the smallest carrying case I could find that it would fit into.

I can't wait to try it out, but first I have to eat dinner. Picked up Taco Bell because I didn't feel like making dinner. I just hope I don't have to read the manual all the way through just to start taking pictures.

Does anyone have this model and do you like it? Most of the Powershot cameras on Amazon.com had good reviews so I'm hoping this was a good choice.

I just bought a Sony Cyber-Shot for my upcoming trip. Came with battery charger. Had to purchase a larger memory stick.

I had an older Sony Cyber-Shot,that needed a new battery, but the cost of the new battery vs buying a newer model, decided on the newer version.

Most digitals are pretty decent now days. I am sure you will love it!

Did you mean - Canon Powershot or Kodak Powershot? If it is a Canon - you WILL love it!

24 photos? W/ flash? Plus using the LCD? Sounds like enough to eat the battery to me. My uncle had (has?) a Sony from a few years ago that uses AAs, and his had about the same performance. He's much happier with the rechargables. My Olympus E-20 can use 4 AA batteries or a Lithium Ion battery. The LiIon is much more powerful (you can tell with how fast the flash 're-sets'), but they're expensive. I have a couple of sets of AA rechargables for the camera and the external flash, and I can get off about 50 shots before I notice the flash start getting weaker. At max resolution, my memory cards only hold 52 shots, so I just take the oportunity to swap the batteries and memory card all at the same time. I think those rehargables are 1600 mAh, but as I've said, I've seen much higher capacities these days... Actually, I don't know how many digital cameras these days take AAs anymore (though I haven't looked, to be honest). Most that I've glanced at seem to come with some type of rechargable battery pack with a seperate charger or a cord/cradle to recharge a non-removable rechargable battery. Hi Nora! I saw your post on the kt, sorry I didn't get back with you. I am on my third digital. My first was an olympus, then the fugiS5000 with a 10x zoom. I had my fugi for 5 years and I love it. I just bought a Sony Alpha100 dslr a few weeks ago. I really like it so far, but I am still learning with it. It had very good reviews. The reason I choose it over the canon or nikon, was because I had minolta lenses that were compatible with it and would keep my cost down. Why don't you check out the site listed below, steves digicam. They give very good reviews on all cameras. I studied reviews for over a month until I made the decision on this latest camera. Sharon, Since I just got my Nikon D50 last month, I can assure you I was in the same boat! I had been using a Fuji point and shoot, but wanted more. The good news is that the automatic mode on my camera is easier to use than the old point and shoot camera. I was able to take great pictures the first day, even though I didn't know much about my camera. And, those first day pictures were of better quality than anything I had taken before. The colors were much more accurate. The camera did a much better job of keeping light colored objects from being overexposed. I was able to enlarge pictures without them becoming grainy. Knowing that you can take great pictures on auto mode, takes the pressure off. I will slowly work on the other modes, beginning with aperature priority. So, get out there and start shooting! We are waiting.

I'll echo some of the advice above by saying you should see the cameras in person before choosing one. But I'll add that it's probably best not to ask the advice of sales clerks at these places. DPreview.com and Steve's Digicams websites have excellent sections with camera recommendations for every level. I would never be without a viewfinderÂthe kind that shows exactly what the LCD screen shows (not just a blank hole to look through. Not only do they make it far easier to see the subject outside in the sun, but bracing the camera against your face greatly reduces shake. Also, determine what you want the camera to do. If you want to take closeups, make sure the camera has a macro setting, focusing down to an inch or two. Conversely, if you want to catch nature shots (or sports, or anything else) far away, look for a long optical zoom. Digital zoom isn't very useful. One of the websites I mentioned above has Super Zoom recommendations. I have two super zoom cameras and use them all the time.

I have a cannon but opted for one that used reg double AA's and have never been sorry. I have never changed batteries but one time on any trip and some of that power was used at home. Love those digital cameras.

If I were younger I would take a course if making picture frames. I hang some of mine and with digital cameras you can make very large photos.

The Canon PowerShot A1100IS does take movies. :-)

I just went outside and made a little video, for some reason I was surprised that it had sound. LOL! You can hear the birds chirping! Cool.

The pictures are ok, some were blurry. I haven't figured out how to use the zoom function yet.

I can see more detail in the up close pictures with this camera than my Kodak...oh, and yes, I meant Canon not Kodak, which is my old camera. It took videos too but I never used it for that. I gave that camera to Alex today.

Thanks Iowagirl, I'll go back and print a copy of it to take with me...otherwise I will be lost when I actually go to do it.
