I have been to one where they played I'll fly away, because they wanted a happy memorial not one that was going to make everyone cry and be sad.
I'd say for a slide show, whatever HE liked, be it Moon River or The Statler Brothers They did some great spirituals. At 84 years of age, anyone but Bette Midler..

This is kind of a tear jerker for me. I kind of lean toward the happy ones myself. What did he like?

AFAIC anything is appropriate for a funeral. The consideration should be what's appropriate to the decedent and his tastes and sometimes sense of humor. Slide show music is very forgiving and most anything will work just fine. I'd say don't stress over it. Pick something he liked and go for it.

I didn't get to go, but I heard my grandfather had "Blue Suede Shoes" sung by Elvis. They kept the music lively and upbeat. I'd pick some songs from one of the older decades and make it enjoyable.

I think it depends on what he liked. I would play one or two of his favourite songs. They don't have to be sad church songs. My husbands cousin had a wife who died at 29. They played a song about a car, can't remember the name of it, but it had 1/2 the funeral home dancing in their seats. It was her favourite song. Did your father not leave any instructions for his funeral?

Tears in Heaven is a very good song.

Susan be sure that it is music that won't sadden anyone if possible. Things like Amazing Grace are really beautiful but tend to make everyone very weepy. Something classic would be my suggestion.

When my mother died, I had a slide show made of pictures that started with one of her and her mother when mother was only a few months old.
Others, as she grew up, married, had us kids, and several events with friends, were all put in chronological order.

The show was set up in the entry of the church...and there was no music. Didn't need it. Her cousins, friends, and their children all enjoyed seeing pictures of themselves much younger and having fun. Music would have drowned out their remarks that celebrated mom's life.

I put mine in chronological order with the first pic being the old house he was born in, followed by some pics of him when he was young. I love those pics.

If you want a good religious song, we used In the Palm of Your Hand by Alison Krauss. I have it on my computer so that it plays when I open it and it has been a comfort to me. The voice of an angel...
Garth Brooks "The Dance" is another one we played, but that gets me bawling at the first few words.
