Frightening happening this afternoon....

I was outside weeding and watering and decided to come in and make lunch. Suddenly I could not see out of one of my eyes....not blurry just no sight. I used an eye wash, and after a few seconds, could see but with "edges". It didn't feel as though it had anything in it, but was very frightening. Anyone ever have this happen? I am doing a fervent thank you prayer right now, and hope that is the worse that it gets. Have never had this happen before.

Never had it happen, but I would run it by my doctor. Is your sight completely back to normal?

You need to call the doctor ASAP. Not sure, but I think that could be the sign of a stroke.

pm2 - yes, even a 'failed' dog from Dog Guides is pretty amazing. The socialization they get during their puppyhood time in a foster home is invaluable - and something you can't replicate with your own dog. The Dog Guide puppies go EVERYWHERE with the foster 'parents' e.g. in stores, restaurants, offices; at all sorts of public events and public places, etc. etc. The foster process is designed to expose them as many new things as possible, as well as give them basic obedience training, so nothing bothers them and they are calm in unfamiliar places. One of Cole's issues is that he is still a bit too excitable and overly friendly (wants to jump up on people!) so he still needs training in that regard. He's still basically a puppy - he'll be 2 years old on the 27th of this month. When he first came he wasn't walking nicely on leash so we used the training collar combination that Dog Guides uses when the dogs are in training - a Halti combined with a martingale (the one with a loop of chain under the throat - not a full chain collar.) The leash gets attached to both collars - instant easy walking with none of the snaky, evasive manoeuvres you often see with dogs on a Halti collar alone. I'd never seen collars used like that until we started volunteering at Dog Guides. Cole now walks nicely (most of the time!) with just the martingale collar. This is what the arrangement looks like: If you're ever having trouble getting a dog to walk nicely on leash, try this arrangement! Dog Guides breeds their own dogs - although some are donated by breeders too. Cole is a miniature poodle although I think they may crossbreed the different sizes of poodles as there are some standards that are smaller than normal and some minatures that are larger than usual. They use a smaller one than Cole for a lot of HED but I think they're a bit bigger than 'toy' size so may be a cross with a miniature (?) If you love dogs, it's a fabulous place to volunteer! As for accomodating the dogs in the garden.... The main thing is to accomodate their need to patrol territory and explore and play so they aren't bored when outside! The path network in the backyard has paths along the side fences and near the back fence. Because of the 'wet corner' the back path does not follow the back fence and there is a short (6") iron fence (just a cheapie ornamental thing) along the edge of the 'wet corner' bed to keep them out of the mud in the spring - they recognize it as a barrier and stay out. On the NW side of the back fence there is a small bank against the fence so the path runs at the base of the bank and the plantings are tough enough there so they aren't damanged when the dogs visit with the neighbours' two through the fence... :-) traffic patterns considered in layout: neater version of layout: Callie doesn't dig - but Cole has started to excavate one place just off the patio recently! So we need to train him not to do that! Callie's breed does indeed include Cairn terriers in the mix - see link.... Noodle sounds sweet - pictures...? Do you still make her cookies? Cole eats commercial dog food - and we make the dog cookies in small training-treat size pieces to use when working on training (which is constant at his age....) thyme - we were posting at the same time.... thank you - and back at you re the gardens - I always enjoy seeing yours (especially the fall color pictures which have inspired me to pay more attention to that here....) getting frightened away from bosch DW now

I have a lower cost Bosch DW (white, tall tub, external controls) about a year old. It replaced a terrible Amana that sounded like a jet engine when it ran. I got really tired of not being able to hear the TV in the next room! The pros: pretty quiet, seems to clean well. Dries okay. Love how simple the controls are. Really like the stainless interior. Doesn't seem to need a food disposal after all (I was skeptical). Cons: SMELLS BAD. I rinse my dishes really well anyway before loading but there's something about the interior (maybe the stainless steel?) that traps odors big time. It smells like something is dead in there and I'll have to run a load that's not even full just to eliminate the stink (the "rinse" cycle doesn't help all that much). I've never had that happen in any dishwasher before. It happens fairly consistently in this Bosch. Now I rinse everything about 4 times before putting it in b/c I'm paranoid! I have check the food grate thing at the bottom of the DW all the time, but that's never been the source of the smell... FWIW, I went to a neighbor's house yesterday to see her kitchen and she has the stainless version of my Bosch DW. She doesn't like hers because she says it smells AFTER the clean cycle has run (never happened to me) and that the dishes don't dry at all so they have to crack the door for awhile before unloading. That hasn't happened to me either. One more con - a design flaw. Bosch made the grate openings on the bottom rack so large that you can't put smaller items (like cups or small bowls) on the bottom. Too bad - because you can put plastic anywhere since there's no heating element. Poor design, IMO. I deal with a lot of small cups and sippy cups with three small kids so that has been annoying for me. Overall, it works as it should and even though I have gripes, I'm not replacing it in the new kitchen since it's so new...

Just think of where the helicopter pilots could have been instead of this wild goose chase. The danger THEY were in while dealing with this. We had a neighbor boy who smoked pot and set his mattress on fire. His parents weren't home at the time. He and his friend took the mattress out into the backyard and hosed it down and dragged it back into his bedroom and then LEFT the house. My DH and I were waked up by the windows on the house exploding from the fire. He and I ran next door and while he was trying to find a door that was not hot to get into the house I called 911. When they arrived the firefighters immediately went in wearing their special suits and wearing the cameras that spot bodies. There were cars in the driveway so we all had to assume that someone was in the house. Nope , no one home. The risk to those firefighters was terrible...not to mention DH and I as we tried to get in. I am glad the boy and his friend were safe and that we were all OK as well as the firefighters. Our neighbors got a whole new house....State Farm paid for it all. Studs out...everything. The boy was reprimanded for a "prank". Not sure what it all means...just my rant I guess. Sorry. c

Loose dogs are a big problem. We had a run-in with a couple of large ones yesterday too. We have 4 small dogs which we walk 3 times a day, always on a leash. Yesterday we met two large shepard/husky type dogs which came running over to us. And they didn't just sniff noses with our dogs. Instead they started fighting with them. Thank heaven, when I yelled at them, they stopped and ran off. I can't help thinking how easily a big dog like that could kill one of our little ones. My husband said he met them once on an early morning walk (he walks the dogs alone before going to start work at 5 a.m.) and they scared him half to death at first! He thought they were wolves at first glance! I know, we should have reported them, but a loose dog around here now and then isn't that unusual and not much (if anything) appears to be done about them. I'm glad you saved the kittens, ravencajun!

This happened to me last summer: I suddenly lost most sight in one eye. It turned out to be an attack of glaucoma--from a build up of pressure in the eye. Drops brought the pressure down immediately, and thank God the sight returned, but I have to take drops for life to prevent it from happening again. I was diagnosed with pigmentary glaucoma. It was a very scarey experience since I had no idea what was happening. Go to the doctor!

It happened to me! I was driving a 26' UHaul when I moved from Missouri to Florida. As dusk was approaching, I was about 30 miles out from my destination. I wore glasses at the time - as I was driving, it seemed that a sheer curtain had been drawn over the windshield. I squinted and found my way to the hotel and the next morning, went to Walmart's Optical Center, had my eyes checked and found I had a 4+ cataract in one eye and a 2.75 in the other. The next week is when I had my cataract surgery. OMG, it was a scary time for me! Thank the Lord my sister-in-law was following the truck (in my car)and was able to be with me until I could get my eyes checked.

That is something you need to go to a ophthalmologist for asap, call tell them the details, you should be seen immediately, in most cases they will have you come in the same day. There's some very serious conditions that can cause that to happen and all of them need a quick assessment.

I suggest that you see your doc as soon as possible ...

... and, unless s/he's sure that things are all O.K., get a referral to an eye doc, as well.

Playing games with eyesight is not where I want to participate.

Thank you, all.....I have an eye dr. appt. for 8:00 in the morning, and med. dr. a bit later. It's been fine the rest of the day, so I am hoping it's nothing. I will keep you posted. It's so strange, as I was feeling very well...none of the usual aches and pains when weeding, etc.

My glaucoma attack was accompanied by sudden, extreme illness--vomiting and dry heaving for hours before I got to the hospital. I thought it was food poisoning. I learned that a sudden spike in eye pressure can bring on this kind of sudden sickness. I will be faithful to my eye drops not only to preserve my sight but so I never have to experience that horrible sickness again. Good luck phyllis and do report back.

I'm so happy you are seeing the doctor. I would have been on my way to the ER. My ophthalmologist has said that if I ever suddenly see a curtain of dark stars or like a black shade is being drawn over my eye to call his office immediately. It could be a detached retina. Does not sound like that's what you have at all since your vision returned.

adellabedella is right, a small stroke can cause that. Did you take some aspirin? Get thee to thou doc posthaste. I hope you called someone.

That your eyesight recovered though is a good sign. Keep us posted.

My husband is now 65. About ten years ago, when he was still pretty healthy and working and driving, he suddenly noticed his vision was bad. Went to the eye doctor, who examined him and sent him straight to an eye specialist (vitreo-retinal). He had a partially torn retina which required laser surgery, which was performed on the spot. Doctor told him if a person over 40 has any sudden change in vision (lightning bolts, halos, blurriness, pain, anything) it could be serious and they should get to a doctor ASAP. Good advice.
