The verdict is in.....

I had my ultrasound today instead of tomorrow. I'm still in limbo, sorta. I have to go back Monday.

There were 2 very visible gestational sacks.

One of them had a baby measuring right on track with a perfect little heartbeat that we saw and heard.

The other sack was pushed right above the other sac, appeared slightly smaller and they weren't able to make out if it was growing a baby or not. Basically, a few scenarios are possible: It could be positioned in a place that isn't completely accessible to the ultrasound probe and until it grows more, we wont be able to get a clear view; or the embryo stopped growing and the sac is deflating; or there is a baby growing but it's just not big enough to see on the ultrasound.

So I'm going back Monday afternoon for another ultrasound. We should really be able to see what's going on by then.

But for now, I have one healthy little bean!! Good thing because I'm dead tired and I'd hate that it was for nothing!! :-)

I am so glad you have atleast one healthy bean! Interesting about the other. Kinda a mix emotion isn't it? Can't wait to hear next week. Thanks for the update.

Oh, what wonderful news, Steph! One bean is great...and two would be wonderful. I'm thrilled you were able to see the heartbeat (and hear it!). How many weeks are you now?

I lived in a minor mansion once. Back in the early '60s large piles in the Kenwood neighborhood were pretty affordable and we bought what was known as the Loeb house. It had been owned by the uncle of Loeb of Leopold and Loeb, but the kid actually lived there after his parents' divorce. On the first floor there was a small cozy room called the music room where you could stash the musicians who could play for your guests at parties without having to rub up against them. In the basement was a walk-in safe. The (rather fishy) story was that during prohibition speedboats from Canada would offload cases of hooch nearby and folks would store them down there. I don't think the Loebs would have to go to that much trouble. Adjacent to the safe was a room that had a narrow counter running all the way around it at desk height. My mom was concerned that we might not be able to have telephone extensions in a place built around 1900, so she asked a man from the phone company to explore. He ended up in the room with the counter, rather shaken. "Lady, you can have anything you want. You've got a trunk line in here." After the Loebs, the house became the dwelling of one of the South Side "Policy Kings," and the room had apparently been the heart of his numbers operation. There were drawbacks. There was no central air conditioning, for example. The first summer we were there, my father has in the hospital getting a hernia fixed and my mom found it was much more comfortable sleeping on the sofa in the living room because it got better ventilation. One night she was awakened by a crack-of-doom crash because the plaster-coated-canvas ceiling in the adjacent dining room fell, pretty much demolishing the dining room table and coating everything including my mom with white dust.. After fixing that, it was clear that other rooms might need pre-emptive renewal, and then we discovered some leaks in the roof and were told that it needed new flashing and that there was only one guy left who did that sort of work in copper, and he charged... So we ended up selling the joint to a wealthy doctor who collected modern art and who could afford the repairs and building a nice, small, modern house a few blocks away. Today, I live just a block and a half away, but in a small townhouse that was just being built when we had our brief experiment in mansiondom. coir vs peat

Coir is too light for a mulch and too expensive, but what I added to the compost pile from the pets did increase the yield. I bought jumbo sized bags of coir in a pet store, but I still buy cheaper sheared wood for my browns. Coir is not really a brown, but it does really increase the bulk/yield and the plants seem to like it a lot. I can't say I would buy it, if I did not have the pets, but it does beat peat moss. And peat is looking like 40 dollars for a large bag. I use compost or the sheared wood for a mulch if I feel I need to mulch. And for potted plants, but I was not using peat in my compost bin anyway at those prices. It's more of a potted thing, but then when you transplant or dump the plants, then all more coir for your bin. I think coir would blow away here as a mulch, I have western facing garden, and strong winds always blow away stuff. I do wish I could get it cheaper in nursery sized bags instead of pet sized bags.

Good Morning Carmen We are in heaven with this perfect weather at this time of the year. My "toned down" garden is doing well, I think. The landscape company accidentally cut down my huge papaya, loaded with fruit, "cleaned"up my banana, by cutting off some of the huge clusters of banana, cleaned up the persimmon, by removing the almost ready fruit, and the same goes for the figs, which were to be our treat for the following evening. But, they show up regularly, cut the lawn, do weed control. I just wish they would stop spraying my alstromeria bed, and have fewer accidents with the spray gun. Palms do not like their roots sprayed with weed killer. All in all, we make the best of everything. The new orchid house is working out well. I have to tweak it some, but the orchids seem happy, and are re-blooming readily. It is a pleasure to see them flourishing. The vegetable/herb garden is responding to Mothers touches, and she is happy to be here. I am so happy to have her for the winters, wish my father was still with us. they would have such a good time together. Sorry it took so long to get back here, everyone - I've been so busy and even now I'm tired from planting a new violet I received in the mail! I hope I can bring it back to full health, as it appears they didn't take the best of care of the plants in their greenhouse (leaf spot and very anemic, chlorotic foliage - obviously not the work of a violet specialist!). I'm glad to be able to grow violets on what little window sill space I have, since my other plant passions take up vastly more room and would require that I hold an actual garden here, which I cannot presently afford. Still, there's something exciting about cultivating precious violets just blocks away from the shadow of the U.S. Capitol! Rob, naturally, I'm only too happy to share my ups and downs in growing violets - and even though I'm sorry to hear you have the same virus floating around your stock, I do feel better for being able to commiserate just a bit. I had also wondered about doing heat treatments and meristem culturing on violets, but then that's well beyond my means! If you do have access to a facility, then it would be a great idea to determine if there are other priority cultivars that need a "cleaning". Perhaps some of the Parmas would benefit from this, too, although surely the French have caught on to this by now. I will be sending good vibes your way for your John Raddenburys to produce viable seed (that's a single, right?). At least it seems that violet cultivars travel internationally with relative ease (perhaps because they're so small?) - otherwise it could be like other plants such as roses, where both bureaucracies and nurseries which are unwilling to deal with foreign customers keep varieties regionally locked more often than not. Poor, poor Thierry ;-) Unfortunately I understood Rob perfectly, so it's not just an Australian thing... perhaps something terribly important was lost in the translation?? How would we ever really know if it was? :-) Violetvamp, I'm so glad to hear that your new violets are prospering for you! I agree...mixed feelings. BUT Grant will be a big brother to at least one baby! The wait is going to be hard.....but at least we have good news this time around!

I'm technically 5 weeks 6 days, but was measuring at 5 weeks, 5 days, which is just fine.

It is interesting about the other sac but this happens alot. It's very possible it just didnt continue growing for some reason, but it's equally possible it's just more hidden and by next week will be big enough to see....it's hard to say.

Good luck! Sounds good so far. It's way too early to count that other sac out yet but one is such a blessing too. Although more babies would increase your probability of having a girl for Grandma Jenni to sew for.

LOL at Okwriter's "cool beans." I just came in from planting beans, so I'm in bean mode, too. Since I can't have one like yours anymore, Kentucky Wonders and French Filet beans will have to do.

When my niece went through IVF the first time, the second sac went away. She had one boy. The second time, it showed like yours and she had a boy and a girl.....just took a while for the 2nd one to show up enough. She's now the proud mama of three. I'm just very happy that you will at least have one. I'm praying that all goes well either way.

How about a "Grant Round-Robin?" LOL He could pack a cute little suitcase with all his favorite jammies and toys and we each get a week-long visit with him. (Don't worry Step; we'll send lots of photos!) LOL By the time he's made the rounds, the babies will be potty-trained!

(Don't tell her, but this would be far more fun than riding shotgun on that hussy, Nectarine!)

And you could send Dakota, too. Harry thinks she's simply H-O-T!

Just a suggestion to give you a little nap time! LOL

And seriously, again, I'm so happy about your bean crop!

I'm tired because thats what early pregnancy does to me. I was the same way with Grant from about 5-12 weeks. It was so hard to function; I had zero energy whatsoever. I'm the same way this time and it's only just begun!

Steph...when I was pregnant with my second baby, I remember being so so tired. I just could not keep my eyes open...

I remember feeling so sorry for my oldest daughter who was not quite two at the time...She would sit on the floor next to the couch and play quietly with her little toys.

She was the most patient little girl...such a sweetheart.

Things changed big time when her ornery little sister was born.

They are both in late 30s now and second one is still the ornery one...LOL

The tiredness will go away soon...hang in there.

All I remember from my two pregnancies was being tired and, once the morning sickness ended, being hungry all the time. Best of luck,Steph. Grant will be a great big brother. Now, how about a pic or two of Grant and Dakota?

Congrats, maybe twice, but at least once!!

You said you were measuring at 5 weeks, 5 days. That's how old my newborn Katie is today! 5 weeks and 5 days! Funny.

Personally, I think going from 1-2 kids (or 1-3) isn't as much a shock as 0-1. My good friend has one boy (4) and had identical twin girls last August. She seems to be handling it very well!

So put on Grant's favorite movie and take a nap Momma!! Hope you are feeling better ASAP!

I found out the tiredness goes away in about 18 years or when they leave for college, whichever comes first.
