I have five kids (eldest is almost 12, youngest is almost 2) -- they are fantastic, incredible, wonderful creatures :-) We have four sons and a daughter, and our home is filled with the sounds of giggling and arguing and jumping and running and chitter-chatter. My husband and I go to bed every night thanking one another for the family we have. The first two boys (26 months apart) each arrived 11 weeks preterm (29 weeks' gestation) and required months of hospitalization in the NICU, including multiple surgeries, ambulance rides and long nights of wondering if they'd survive until morning. They finally became healthy little toddlers and I had my tubes tied, thinking there was no way I could bear to bring another baby into a terrifying scenario like that again. Time passed, and the yearning got only stronger for more children...I discovered the source of my obstetric problems (a congential gynecological defect) and underwent a grueling seven-hour surgery to repair my tubes and correct my dysfunctional anatomy. Went on to have three more scrumptious kids and now I have five healthy, gorgeous children. It's exhausting, yes. It sometimes causes a bit of financial juggling (I'm a SAHM). The volume in my house is often very high with clamors for my attention or frustrations among the siblings, but it's nothing compared to the joy of hearing them laugh uncontrollably during an afternoon of goofing off as a family. I don't worry about the teenage years -- we've done our best to lay the groundwork to raise our kids with enormous self-respect and self-esteem. They'll make mistakes, I'm sure of it, but hopefully they'll return to their core values and continue to grow into fine adults. Until then, we have years of baking cookies, chasing the dog around the backyard, monitoring homework and tidying up mountains of Hot Wheels and multi-colored wooden blocks with these sweet, funny little kids we're so lucky to call our own. It's all good. Create the family you want, and then pour your heart and soul into enjoying your blessings. If you already feel sad about *no more babies, ever* and the vasectomy hasn't even happened yet, you're clearly not ready to move on -- you'll know in your heart which path is right for you and your family. I have lived in my house for 19 years. The people on the left of me are the original owners, having lived in their home for 55 years. The house next door........... The original owners bought the house 55 years ago too. They raised a set of twins, whom were the neighbourhood bullies. Eventually one of the twins, Doug, took over the house. Not sure if it was left to him when their parents died, or if he bought it from them. Doug drank and drank and drank. Rather than have a coffee in his travel mug at 7 in the morning, he had beer in his. He was riding a bicycle more often than his pickup truck because he was always getting caught with a DUI. When we didn't see him for a few days at a time, I would ask my kids or my husband if they had seen him. I even asked the neighbours now and then if they had seen him. My fear was that he would get drunk and fall down and hit his head and die and nobody would know. Two and a half years ago, my husband called me at work. The police had knocked on our door asking if we had seen Doug in the past week or so. We hadn't, but that wasn't unusual. After all, we lived next door to him and couldn't tell if his lights were on. He also rarely used his garage out back any more. I asked why they were looking for him. Apparently the coroner was removing his body. They figured he died on Halloween day because a dish of candy was sitting by the living room door. He was found on the couch. It was November 9th. So for over 9 days, a dead man lay on the couch just 12 feet or so from my bedroom. And it took 9 days for his friends to notice they couldn't get a hold of him. The police had to break down the back door to get inside. There have been two sets of tennants living in the house since he died. One was so awful, we called the police and the city several times because of his barking dogs. He let them bark 24/7. The second set of tennants moved out in December. We didn't mind them as much. They liked to party and if we yelled out the back window for them to keep it down because it was late, they would turn down the noise. But it wasn't good enough for the neighbours on the other side. They got a hold of the new owner (Dougs son), and had them evicted. A new person moved in about a week ago. So far.........so good...... I know the people across the street just by face. We don't talk. But we do wave occasionally. It's not like it was in the 60's and 70's when everyone knew everyone. Nowadays, everyone keeps to themselves. It's sad, really.

You haven't been in the middle of this project very long for all of that work to be completed. And I'm not sure why you want to paint your deck. That does nothing but create a lifetime of maintenance issues for you. Decks should be stained, not painted. And that should wait about 6 months for the pressure treated lumber to dry out enough for the stain to stick. Stain it too soon, and it will all come off. Combine paint, and doing that too soon, and you'll be painting it every year rather than staining it every couple of years. Did you have the structural engineer's report about redoing all of those window openings and wall openings? That should have told you what wall depth was possible and wasn't. If the wall needs to be reinforced for support, that will add depth to it. If it didn't need to be reinforced, then that should have been spelled out as well. Did the contractor talk with the engineer directly about the requirements? Lots of contractors have poor communication skills. That's not unusual. It would be unusual to have poor construction skills and poor communication skills and still be a licensed and insured contractor who gets decent references from people who've used him before. What does your written contract say about parting of the ways? The written word rules. Did he pull the permits? Or did you? If he pulled the permits, you need to talk to your local codes office and see if it's possible to transfer them to a new contractor or if you will have to apply for entirely new ones. If you aren't careful, you can have a lien placed on your home by the contractor. Getting someone new may be difficult. Most contractors do not like to come in in the middle of another's job, so you may find it difficult to find someone to pick up the pieces here. They don't know if the homeowner or the contractor was a problem, and they'd rather not take the chance that it was you. Checking out a contractor's license, insurance and references and past work does help to prevent getting the duds. Not always though. I'd recommend trying to communicate with him about your expectations as the first solution. However, some of those expectations are a tad unrealistic, so I'd also recommend that you talk to some other neighbors who've had renovation work done to be able to get some perspective on exactly how long things take and how expensive it is. You are in one of the most expensive locations in the country, with some of the most difficult to access property which makes it hard for contractors to get work done. It takes twice as long, and twice as much money to do the same project in NYC as it would in a suburb with plenty of parking and plenty of room for materials to be delivered, etc. And if it does come down to a parting of the ways, you will want to be sure you do it correctly so that you don't create more problems for yourself. It might be worth it to consult a construction attorney before you go down that path...

I'm with Marilyn_C, but I also do not like salty candy. If you replaced the peanuts with almonds or hazelnuts and covered it with chocolate, I might like it, but I seem to remember that it had an odd texture. I've never eaten more than one bite of one. I like Snickers, but I buy the ones with almonds. My favorite candy is English Toffee, and I make that with no salt.
