I don't know my neighbors well enough to have a chit chat with them, just wave when we see them outside. And I am on the HOA Board.....

On one side I met the neighbors once while I was out cleaning up after a huge wind storm. We chatted briefly, I learned they were renting the house from the previous guy, and were hoping to buy it, but needed to convince the owner to lower his price to a more reasonable point. Since then the for sale sign is gone, and someone is living there, but I don't know who. On the other side we've met the lady that rents there a couple of times, and invited her over for coffee once, but rarely see her.

We are blessed to have nextdoor neighbors in their 40's who check on us. We are in our late 70's. Our daughter lives 14 hours away and if she can't reach us, she calls the police to come do a wellness check on us, which she did when we were without power for 4 days. And if good friends didn't see me online, they would be checking too.

Regardless of age, we really should keep watch on our neighbors.

I know many neighbors, but across the street, I haven't seen those people in over a year. Not even seen them coming and going in the car, but I see lights at night. Odd.

I have one friendly neighbor couple who look out for me, let me know if an outside light has burned out or if they see or hear anything odd. We also have a handyman that works often in the neighborhood and knows most of us. I think he would check on us if the mail weren't picked up or if the trash containers weren't out on trash day. My other neighbors are the wave at you type, but I don't know any of them very well.

Recent news reported that a woman had been found dead in the rear seat of her car, parked in her garage. It was estimated that she'd died six years earlier. She was only discovered after her savings ran out and the bank where she had her mortgage began foreclosure proceedings, sending someone to value the home.

Evidently all her bills were paid by automatic withdrawal. A neighbor mowed the lawn; people thought she wintered in Florida. I still think she must have gotten some mail!

No wonder she committed suicide. (Certainly sounds like that.) She evidently had no friends or family.

We have limited contact with the couple across the street -- water for them as requested and watch the house when they are away. (They have a two other homes.)

Our only other close neighbors are next door -- perhaps three chats on the front lawn in nine years. He travels a lot, and they've had two active teens -- now in college.

This is very unlike where we raised our DS and kids were in and out of every house every day. My childhood neighborhood was much like that too. If DH didn't walk our dog, we wouldn't know anybody here!

We are all pretty good about watching out for our neighbors in this subdivision. We have the garden club so all of us know each other and keep check on each other and see each other regularly. Several of our members are quite elderly, our former president is 91. We call or go by their homes. I have taken her to the doctor and for groceries. She had a bad cold which I was sure had turned to pneumonia and she was refusing to go to the doctor so I called her son and told him to get over there and take her to the doctor. He went immediately and she went straight into the hospital with pneumonia and was in there for over a week because her heart was acting up too.
He called me several times to thank me.

Next door on the right we are very good friends in fact they were over here for gumbo dinner Sunday night and we are going to lunch tomorrow. They are close to our age and we have a lot in common.
Next door on the left sold about a year ago and the new people are a young couple who are very nice. He is away a lot working in the oil business so we watch the place for him. He has called me and asked me to go check if he remembered to shut his garage door lol.
Several others on our street I know well they are members of the garden club and also members of the civic club which we are all involved in.

I don't think that kind of thing would happen here but you just never know. That is so very sad but it was a good thing she was able to get around and feed herself and keep herself alive.
I can't imagine the amount of noise those dogs must have made though that she did not go see what was in there and open the door.

We have no one on our left. Just pine trees One neighbor is on the hill above us. He's 85 or 86. He still drives but has some trouble walking because of his feet. My hubby is 68 and he cuts his grass for him. Plus he places our daily newspaper in his mailbox when we're done reading it. I call at times to make sure he's still around. Our only other neighbor is to our right and we don't know them at all. They are renters and we rarely see them.

There's no one behind us.

An older guy that dresses like a teenager, drives a new mercedes sports car, teaches grade school on one side. We watched his house for years, it was his Summer home, we were on call for his alarm system.

A 25 year old girl that paid cash with her trust fund for the house across the street. It looks deserted except when she's on vacation & her dad stops by.

The single guy on the other side of us, we watch each others houses.

All people I've met, had conversations with, but if I didn't see them for 2 months....no problem...

We know all our neighbors. The backyard neighbors we talk to when we are in the yard. On the right the lady that lives in that house is a widow along with the 2 ladies that live across the street. Next door on the left is a never married 80+ year old who is very odd. She has no long distance service so if she needs to talk to her brother in Wisconsin she asks to use our phone. Or if she needs anything on the computer she comes a knocking. We always watch her driveway to make sure she picks up her newspaper. She told us some years ago to not move her if we think she might be hurt or ill. She also gave us her families phone numbers just in case No family in Georgia. I wonder if anyone watches us. lol

I know my neighbours very well except for the 2 new families across the street. I keep an eye out for Cheryl next door and often take dinner to her because I know she can't really cook anymore because of medical issues. She does have daily care coming in so at least I know that she is always being checked on. I think if my neighbours across the street didn't see my dog out they would become concerned.

I was very sick with H1N1 over the Christmas holidays and I was unwell until the middle of January. My sister was here for a few weeks but then she had to go home. I was snowed in and thought at least one of my neighbours might have been concerned that there were no coming and going from my house, the driveway hadn't been used and the porch and sidewalk were not cleared off. Two of my nieghbours who would have been concerned, one has moved and the other was away.

Good thing for FB, My Sister-in-Law is now one of my FB friends. I had posted that I had a funny feeling in the back of my neck and after she noticed my status hadn't changed for a few days she called to make sure I was okay.

When you live alone anything can happen so you have to make sure you check on people you know who are alone and make sure you also check in with them so they know you are okay. I could fall down the basement stairs and I don't know if anyone would find me or notice I was missing for a few days.

cherry, that's exactly what I am talking about. We should know when someone is missing! and that can't happen if we don't know each other. I think I will try to find my neighbors more often. And listen to them. People have so many amazing stories, but ya gotta stop and listen (you, being ME, this time).

This is so sad. Unfortunately I don't know my neighbors well. The lady living not straight across, but one house over is about the only one, that will notice something at my house.

She is a dear. Her mom lives with her. there is a home health care helper there daily.

There are 34 homes on our block and we have a block Facebook group with 32 member homes.
We have 2 block parties per year and it's well attended.
We have 3 families with Girl Scouts and cookies are sold door to door. When people go out of town, no one ever has the PO hold mail....one of the neighbors takes it in.
Groups dine together in each others homes and get together for restaurant meals.
Our kitchen window is about 12' from the kitchen window of the house next door. We wave pretty much daily and do our own funky sign language window to window with those neighbors.
We attend birthday parties at our neighbor's homes.

We know and Like our neighbors. We struck it very lucky on this block!

I have lived in my house for 19 years. The people on the left of me are the original owners, having lived in their home for 55 years. The house next door........... The original owners bought the house 55 years ago too. They raised a set of twins, whom were the neighbourhood bullies. Eventually one of the twins, Doug, took over the house. Not sure if it was left to him when their parents died, or if he bought it from them. Doug drank and drank and drank. Rather than have a coffee in his travel mug at 7 in the morning, he had beer in his. He was riding a bicycle more often than his pickup truck because he was always getting caught with a DUI. When we didn't see him for a few days at a time, I would ask my kids or my husband if they had seen him. I even asked the neighbours now and then if they had seen him. My fear was that he would get drunk and fall down and hit his head and die and nobody would know.

Two and a half years ago, my husband called me at work. The police had knocked on our door asking if we had seen Doug in the past week or so. We hadn't, but that wasn't unusual. After all, we lived next door to him and couldn't tell if his lights were on. He also rarely used his garage out back any more. I asked why they were looking for him. Apparently the coroner was removing his body. They figured he died on Halloween day because a dish of candy was sitting by the living room door. He was found on the couch. It was November 9th. So for over 9 days, a dead man lay on the couch just 12 feet or so from my bedroom. And it took 9 days for his friends to notice they couldn't get a hold of him. The police had to break down the back door to get inside.

There have been two sets of tennants living in the house since he died. One was so awful, we called the police and the city several times because of his barking dogs. He let them bark 24/7. The second set of tennants moved out in December. We didn't mind them as much. They liked to party and if we yelled out the back window for them to keep it down because it was late, they would turn down the noise. But it wasn't good enough for the neighbours on the other side. They got a hold of the new owner (Dougs son), and had them evicted. A new person moved in about a week ago. So far.........so good...... I know the people across the street just by face. We don't talk. But we do wave occasionally. It's not like it was in the 60's and 70's when everyone knew everyone. Nowadays, everyone keeps to themselves. It's sad, really.

When I lived in CA, I always knew my neighbors. It just happens that the block I live on now, people just keep to themselves. The cemetery is across the street so we all live on one side. The elderly couple next door to me are very nice and we have always been friends. The couple on the other side are very strange and they don't speak to anyone. The police are at their house at least once a year for a family dispute. I walk my dog and have met people on other streets near me who are friendly.

We're close to the neighbors on our right, left, and across the street. We all keep a watch out on each other and if we notice something amiss we'll call.

Like the time the family on the right left their garage door opened. When I was going to bed, I noticed it and call them. A few months later they called to let George know his left back up light was out.

The neighbors on the right own a dog and he's a chef. They own a sheltie who loves walking with Lily and playing the back yard. Even though they are a good deal younger than us, they keep an eye on things.

We also have a key to the neighbors house on the right and they have one to our house as well. Gives me a nice comfy feeling.

One of the best things I've done recently is host my Thanksgiving with my neighbors.....across the street, on either side, and behind us. The age span was minus one to over eighty! Just lovely.

It kick started some good (and important) neighborly bonding and I feel really good about it. Just the swapping of phone numbers has been helpful and comforting.

My area is fairly rural and we're in a smaller subdivision. We live on the "busy" street and there are 6 houses in a quarter mile stretch that I will call "my block". I have no neighbors on my right or rear property lines. The closest house is on my left and it's about 100 feet away. These neighbors have been here a little over a year. We know them well enough to help out (when their pipes froze and their ceiling collapsed) and take in mail but we don't really socialize. We don't have keys to each other's homes. Their 8 year old son knows my house is a safe place and he's been instructed to come here if anything ever happens. So far, just the one instance *crossing fingers*.

The house across the street is set back very far and is about a quarter of a mile away. They don't always stay here as they move between two houses. They are friendly but again, no key swapping or socializing. We stop and chat every now and then but it's very infrequent.

The folks who live across the street and one house over are 15 years older than we are but we are very close with them. I talk to her every day and we take care of each other's animals.

Everyone else in the subdivision are friendly but I really don't know any of them. I wave if I'm in their area (walking, running, bike riding etc) but that's about it. We all hibernate in the winter any way!

A couple of years ago, the neighbor to my left (different folks) passed away (stroke). The school had called her to let her know their son hadn't been picked up; there was no answer from any of his phones. Even though we lived next door, we never exchanged numbers and she didn't even know our last name to look me up. His wife came home from work and found him. So sad. She moved into another home nearby and I still help her out from time to time.

We made sure the new neighbors had our contact info.

We live in a cul-de-sac, 10 houses total. Our closet neighbor grew up living close to SO, so they have known each other since they were kids and I have known her for about 20 yrs, so we are friends and always watch out for each other. The neighbor on the other side has only lived there for a few months--cold winter months-we do not know them, yet. One of our other neighbors is SO's cousin, and SO's daughter and her family and one of his sons and his family live less than 1/8 of a mile away. We use to know all of our neighbors really well back when all of our kids were growing up here, now, 20 yrs later, several of the couples that use to live here are divorced, one couple have both passed away and the rest have just moved. This cul-de-sac was all developed in the space of 2 years and we all got to know each other and our kids grew up together, now SO and I are the only 2 left out of the original 10 families that started out here. Sad now that I think about it.

We live on a dead end street and have the most wonderful neighbors anyone could want...I recently went away and the neighbors made sure my hubby was well taken care of, even if it was just a "stop by" or by making and delivering a full dinner....We all pretty much know everyone's routine and if something is out of kilter, we look into it......I feel very, very fortunate living where we do and having such great neighbors.....
