I was listening to an interview with Senator Marco Rubio about his book "An American Son: A Memoir."...and I saw exactly the point that he was making. He said that when he (and other people grew up in years past, their parents gave them or instilled in the courage, inspiration, values, will, and imagination to succeed. They made sure that their kids were getting an education so that all these things were possible...something they never accomplished. They made their children aware that they could achieve their dreams and that all they needed to do was work hard for it.....

Many of today's parents have forgotten all those values and the important thing for them to give is iPads, computers, expensive computer games and the xBox things...a car when they reach 16.. They believe that the important thing is to give their kids the things (possessions) that they didn't have growing up....

I know that I grew up in a totally different time and I do not believe that all children are bad and that many work hard and do achieve their dreams. Unfortunately I also see the exact opposite of that in so many. The way they talk to adults and conduct themselves is unbelievable. The moral values that they seem to have is sorely lacking. Today's kids accept, as the norm things that would make our ancestors cringe...things like having children out of wedlock, living with or sleeping with half a dozen mates before deciding which one they will marry. Kids got into trouble in times past but not to the extent that is happening today. If even my child had talked to me the way I see other kids talking to their parents on tv programs and on the news, I can't imagine what I would have felt. What happened to respect for ones parents. I wasn't an angel by any means but I will tell you this, I walked the straight and narrow because I didn't want to hurt my parents. Has the sense of right from wrong in behavior gone away and in it's place....because I want to... I see it in my own family and the families of friends and neighbors.......lack of respect......a sense of whatever feels good at the moment, a sense of entitlement....They expect it, and they get it or they will make life hell for their parents.

His book sounds to me like a book I would like to read.

I know that the current rage is crap like 50 Shades of Gray...but more people should be reading books like Rubio's.

soapstone before/after rehoning

Farmgirlinky - I realize this is an old thread, so I hope you see this post or maybe someone else will be able to answer my question about refinishing soapstone. Does the rehoning also help to eliminate or minimize chips or gouges along the edges? I know there would be the desire to keep a clean, even edge, but it might be worth a little unevenness in the edges if it smoothed out the chips. I am trying to decide if soapstone will hold up well enough to look terrific when we will need to resell our house in 8-10 years after we retire. I wouldn't mind having to spend $500 every 4-5 years for rehoning if it really brought the soapstone back to its original, pristine state. I am quite sure that rehoning will minimize or eliminate scratches, but it is the chips on the edges that worry me the most. I know the aging can be an appealing trait for some, but for resale, we'd need to make it look virtually new. If anyone has refinished or refined their soapstone, I would appreciate knowing how well it worked to minimize or eliminate both scratches and edge chips.

If we take him at his word, that means his charitable contributions come to about 0.05 per cent of his fortune, or five cents for every $100. Of course, $5 million is more than nothing, but Trump likes to portray of himself as a great philanthropist, and the numbers simply don’t justify that image. When you also consider the fact that he has managed to convert his personal foundation into a mechanism for giving away other people’s money, rather than his own, it brings to mind something Marco Rubio said back in February: “This guy is a con artist. He’s always making things up. And no one holds him accountable for it.” Talk about a deplorable.

Really, it's just not going to happen. You seem awfully certain... for something that's years away. Did anyone seriously think T could win? We don't know what is going to happen in 4 years. At this point in B. Clinton's first term, his approval ratings were lower than T's are now. Events have a way of happening and changing what everyone thought was a political certainty. Trump recent weekly average- May 22-28- 41% approval Bill Clinton June 1993- 37% approval Aside from which, if T is really so corrupt and there's so much evidence as people here are suggesting, he could be impeached w/in the first 2 years. Then, Ryan and long-awaited and vitally necessary entitlement reform! You think people are going to vote for someone who wants to hurt them by taking away their health insurance, Medicare or social security? Yes. I do. First off, Obamacare really really really sucks. People hate it. And Medicare and Social Security have a lot of fiscal problems coming over the long-term. I'd be thrilled if both programs were fundamentally reformed or phased out over time. And people vote for lots of other reasons other than politicians promising to let them keep government programs. If people primarily voted on the basis of protecting these programs, republicans wouldn't control every single branch of government and the vast majority of states and fill just about every elected office higher than dog catcher in most of the country between the coasts. Whether Trump / Pence / Ryan can win is a major function of whomever the democrats can find to run. Could any one of those 3 R's beat Biden? Probably not, although Biden's gonna be really old. But all of those 3 could beat Hillary (and I would not be surprised if she ran again--- she just won't go ever away!) or Chelsea C (and I cannot believe the way the media is pushing her... seriously, you'd think the democrats would want this whole family to just disappear!) or E. Warren or Bernie. Right now, I'm hard pressed to see who the democrats could run, other than Biden, with a reasonable shot at winning. Dems are going to have to figure out who their base is. Do they want to be the progressive coastal party or try to get some of the woking class voters back who live between the coasts (this isn't to say R's aren't divided too... they definitely are... but I think R's tend to fall in line/ come home to whomever their candidate is more so than D's do)

take everything that politician says w a grain of salt! he lied to floridians for yrs about his own immigration story and stole $$ from his own party via charging up his party credit cards (both his own given card and state party card) then 2 yrs later when finally pressed, fessed up and paid up. he is all about selling his story for political gain right now... anybody who tries to hide their immigration status & financial mistakes is an outright liar in everything they do and say. ~ liz

I think that ruthieg was talking about how the values of many children and young people have changed. I do believe some parents have forgotten the values of the previous generation and are raising rude,spoiled children and that is what she was saying in refering to a book. But then some people seem to want to change the subject to something political which was not the point of her post in my opinion.

Maybe the other folks are lucky enough to not have to deal with this kind of behavior.
Maybe they missed the clip on the news of the lady bus monitor being harrassed by middle schoolers, and even the bus driver did nothing to stop it. Amazing! I believe those children's parents are the ones she was describing.

If I did some of the stuff that many do today - I'd have to grow a beard:

couldn't look at my face in the mirror in the morning.

Dad taught me to live so that I could rspect myself ... and to respect people. I followed his various teachings, many of them related to what he heard in church, where he took me every Sunday and similar to what the senator outlined ... and I saw Dad living them, himself.

That was mainly not just because Dad said so, and I didn't want to disappoint him, but because I felt that it was a matter of my own integrity.

I heard a teen talking so snottily to her mom in the dressing room that i wanted to punch mom in the throat for tolerating it....i cant imagine what makes parents need to please their chil dren so at the cost of social propriety and healthy boundaries.

sleeper, i've tried to finish "grey" but guess i'm just too old to put up with some guy telling me what to do and when, or with a gal that can find being doninated that attractive...granted i havn't read the other 2 (and have them) it all seems so pointless...

while i'm sure the senator meant well, and do agree many children are aweful, i do have hope there are other parents who are raising good kids...wish you could have spent time with my grands this past weekend...

I don't want to have to defend the good kids around because I know they are many and I am as someone said, not talking about the man himself, I am talking about what he said about instilling hope and dreams in kids and giving them the desire to achieve something besides winning the next video game.

The older generation has ranted about the young forever. It's in the Bible. It's in ancient Roman writings. It's an easy target and a distraction from the fact that nothing useful is being said.

I don't want to hear this old saw any more than I want to hear people in *government* debate other *moral choices* that can't be legislated.

No one has higher standards and can be more judgemental of behavior than I LOL. My standards are higher than most and I expect the same from everyone. I was raised to respect people, not just my elders, I was raised in a politcal family of 3 generations. Even thou I was never the elcted person I was held to the standards voters expect from someone they entrust who is paid w their tax $$. I grew up under the watchful eye of EVERYONE in the public and extremely strict parents & grandparents who believed appearances, intelligence and money were everything. Peoples opinions' were everything to us. I very much recognize the extreme shortfalls of almost everyone basically under the GenX age and honestly I truely believe it helps everyone above age 35. I grew up w abusive, strict parents and not a day goes by that I don't benefit from it in every aspect of my life. Since the age of 13 I have been called professional (seriously yes...we had to answer the phones for our father professionally) and I am shocked daily by people I have to interact with. Does it bother me, sure but I know I am better than they are and just go on with my much accomplished life. The younger generations will never achieve what older gens. have in such short periods of time because they lack simple human skills. They are no threat to me and they might eventually learn thru the hard way...

What particularly bothers me about rubio is that he lied at first about his immigration status because of the party his is in. the he comes clean and basically admits to being as his party labels them an "Anchor Baby". All the while it's ok for his party to dis immigrants while he himself is one LOL. That behavior does not go over well in FL, a state w several billion $$ in agriculture dependent on immigrant workers who keep the US in tomatoes during the winter and keep prices from being $10 a piece. Also being a product of politics I expect perfect bahavior from politicians especially when you do not come from old $$ and need $$ just to exist in politics, aka those w the $$ own you. His using the party credit card to pay for his home kitchen renovation, first saying it was approved then fighting about it for 2 yrs w the party then finally saying he made a mistake (after being talked about for VP)and paying up 2 yrs later is flat out pathetic.... ~ liz

I don't care of Rubio for the reasons Liz cited, but I have no dog in the fight about children's behavior.

thanks patti! spring 2012 was an all time record setter for us in the landscape growing/shipping biz and continued well past the usual mid May into the end of June! still waiting for a slow down...guess we should be happy for the excess business LOL! Thanks! ~ liz
