I love it creamed, as a sweet-sour side, in soup, or any old way. I just brought in some freezer slaw that hit the spot for me at lunch.

Boiled, drain and cover with lots of butter and salt.
Boiled and drained and cheese sauce drizzled over.

I usually make my own white sauce for creamed cabbage, but I found this recipe. I haven't made it yet, but have the recipe out to try soon. Sounds pretty good.

CABBAGE AND SAUSAGE

1 link smoked saussage, cut into pieces
1 med. head cabbage
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 c. milk
1 c. grated Cheddar cheese
2 Tbsp. cracker crumbs (I know I'll use more)

Coarsely shred cabbage. Boil 5 minutes. Mix together soup, 1/2 c. Cheddar cheese and milk. Butter casserole. Put in cabbage and sausage and pour soup mixture on top. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 c. cheese and then cracker crumbs. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Probably not everyone would like it but the three of us eat it well. I just slice it off the head real thin , put it in a Corning Ware pan and stick it in the microwave. Run water over it and pour it off before the microwave. I usually cook about half of a large head at a time and cook it for about 6 or 7 minutes. I don't put anything on it, not even salt or pepper. We might get tired of it but went for years without ever serving cabbage at all other than slaw so we are enjoying it now.

Slice and cut into about 1 inch squares. Cook in salted water till tender. Drain. Melt butter and whole milk in with the cabbage, add salt and pepper and serve.

In a large skillet,cook about 4 slices of bacon until crisp. Remove bacon, and add some thinly sliced onion to the bacon grease. Cook onion until tender and then add tons of thinly sliced cabbage and fry away. (and a bit of butter or olive oil if needed). Serve with the crispy crumbled bacon on top. I can eat an entire head of cabbage this way!

I want to use some of the leftovers to make little Runza's for one. Think I could flatten out canned biscuits and use that instead of bread dough? Can I freeze them after cooking?

With cheese sauce is very good! Or scalloped, or fried with noodles and lots of butter! Yummy!

Sliced thin, raw, with lemon juice, salt and pepper.

A dash of curry in your steamed cabbage is really REALLY good!

Clean and shred your cabbage and cook on low heat in butter with a finely chopped onion. You want to cook it thoroughly but don't let it brown. It can take about 45 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture cool and add 2 to 3 chopped hard boiled eggs. Fill your favorite unsweetened pie crust or puff pastry and bake as you would a meat pie.

Love Sausage and Kraut.

I eat it raw- after removing the outer leaves and washing the head - slice off a piece and maybe a light dash of salt. It makes a good 'munchy'.

In my opinion, the stalk is the best part. After the leafy part has been removed, most people throw away the stalk, but its so good! However, be aware that the the 'rind' over the stalk, the part the leaves were attached to, is quite bitter and hides the good stuff underneath. Upend the stalk and you can see an outer covering that is different to the smooth internal part. This rind is bitter. Slice it off the stalk, add a dash of salt to the stalk and munch away. The inner part is on the sweet side of taste.

The bacon, onion and cabbage sounds great. How long do you fry the cabbage? And before someone says "till it's done" ;) How do I know when it's done? I've been meaning to take a shot at Tina Nordstrom's Brown Cabbage recipe but haven't gotten to it. Cabbage is tough to do in small amounts. Not sure what to do with a whole head.

I think cabbage might be the most overlooked vegetable there is! Any of the above ways are good, and my favorite is the fried. Cynic, fry it till it is "tender", but not mushy.

I like it any which way. Dh and DD don't eat it, but there is a store here that sells them in wedges for people like us that can't use a whole cabbage up. Green, purple, and savoy.

If I had a choice right now, it would be cabbage rolls.

Lots of good ideas here, and I'll definitely try some of them. I just want to add that after growing cabbage for many years I have a strong preference for the early varieties, which are tender and juicy and somewhat shiny, rather than the big, hard, late cabbages. In my area, Walmart is the only store that routinely carries tender, juicy cabbages.

Oh, and it's very good sliced and stir-fried with onions, garlic, and tofu, seasoned with soy sauce.

I use cabbage to make that Ramen oriental slaw. Yummy.

I also love to make cabbage soup. Here's a recipe similar to mine...I usually add sausage and lots of sugar and just use chicken broth instead of the bouillon and water.

Oh, Wildchild, that pie sounds YUMMMY!

I make a casserole with chopped cabbage, browned ground beef, sliced mushrooms and a can of mushroom soup. Mix it all together, bake at 350 until bubbly hot and sprinkled french fried onions on top. It is one of our family favorites! I love cabbage.

Oh Carla, I love ham, cabbage and potatoes soup, it's a staple at our house come cold weather.

I like it simmered -cut in wedges, then serve with Balsamic vinegar drizzled all over it & a pat of butter.
Also make stuffed cabbage rolls but my absolute fav is to cut a small head, sliced somewhat thin. In large frying pan-melt butter & saute onions until translucent, then add the cabbage, cover & simmer until tender. Meanwhile I low boil a ring of kielbasie for about 20 min., as well as a 1/2 bag of wide egg noodles in another pot. Drain the kielbasie, slice in thick coins & add that & the drained noodles to the cabbage mix. Salt & pepper to taste and more butter if necessary. YUMMO!

Halushki (cabbage and noodles) has always been a favorite of mine but I mostly ate it at church picnics in the NE area of the state but now I make it at home all of the time. I just thinly slice the cabbage and fry it up in oil and butter (as little as possible) with some onion and I add a tiny bit of brown sugar, lots of black pepper and celery salt, onion salt and/or garlic salt (or plain salt). I add a tad more butter for flavor at the end and then I mix it with cooked whole wheat egg noodles. When I make it myself I can get a higher ratio of cabbage to noodles.

I love stuffed cabbage but I've never made it. I just eat my mom's and DH's grandmother's when they make it.

re: the bacon/onion/cabbage recipe. "till it's done" to me is, as someone suggested, slowly cooking on low-to-medium heat until very wilted. You need to be patient, as it does indeed take up to 45 minutes. Try to let it carmelize like the onions but not burn. It is soooo incredibly good.

My MIL makes fried cabbage with noodles. She is Hungarian, but she tends to cook with so much butter in the cabbage (and sour cream in other recipes) that I have a hard time with her food while dieting. I try my own spin on it with good results.

Only made it a couple of times. Eric doesn't like it and I haven't figure out how to make just one or two servings (all I want for a few weeks at a time). When I do make it, I just boil it until soft and add pepper.

I HATE corned beef! My mom used to make me eat them together. I told her that now that I am an adult, she can no long force that stuff one me, LOL.

Like Jemdandy--raw. So crunchy and delicious. I also like rat turnips and rutabegas.

The only way I ever make it is in stuffed cabbage, which I *love*!

Cabbage rolls are so very good, too. My sister gave me her recipe years ago and it was to die for. Now I just chop the cabbage and make it into a hot dish with some of the same ingredients.

I only eat cabbage raw. I detest the Smell of cooked cabbage it hangs in the house for days.

Two things I told DH I would never cook in our house:
Tuna fish and cabbage. And I never have. The smell of both "make" me want to barf.

I love stuffed cabbage leaves. There are all kinds of recipes for fillings out there. It is great served with potato pancakes and applesauce.

I like to shred mine coarsley,,,add onions, ground beef, cheese and some kind of tomato something,,,sort of like stuffed only bake in layers in a casserole dish,,,add rice if ya want.
