We bought a New Car

DH and I bought a new car last night. ItÂs a 2009 Nissan Versa and it is SO cute! ItÂs a silver blue color with charcoal interior. We got $4700 in rebates and a good interest rate. Payments are $260 a month and I can pay it off early with no penalties. ItÂs about $115 less than our payments were on the Dodge. The great thing is the car gets 35 miles per gallon and it will only cost me $40 to fill it ever 2 Â½ weeks. On the down sideÂthere is no ashtrayÂaagghhhh. They want $260 to have an ashtray and lighter installedÂI donÂt think so!!!

I have a small ashtray that will fit into the cup holder that will work just as well. Nissan is not going to stop me from smoking in my carÂlol

AnywayÂwe are very excited about getting the new car which will be on Thursday!

Sam, that 'smokers package' has been an extra for a long time. At least 10 years. I had to pay extra in 1998 for mine. My new one doesn't have one. That's okay, I don't need one.

In the glove box of your New car should be an owner's manual. In the owners manual there will be a chapter on the care and cleaning of your new vehicle. Follow the manufacturers suggestions. My favorite option is to take the car to the hand wash and detail er, every 3 months nad just rinse and wipe it with water and shammie it dry every few weeks I pay the nice people $30.00 and they do the car in and out so nice it looks new and smells real nice still 5 yrs later. Buying a car is stressful enough. The car dealers would love to have you think that you are required to provide them with this extremely valuable information but never seem to have the documentation on hand to back their reasons. Ask them for this 'proof' in writing. If they are following the law, they will have some paperwork they can refer to. Unless your financing, the only reason car dealers could possibly have for wanting this is for marketing purposes. The Department of Homeland Security, The Treasury Department AND the IRS do NOT require you to provide this to a CAR DEALER! Your State Attorney General is the appropriate entity to talk to. They oversee the car dealer/auto industry. Ask them this question and ask them to provide their response in writing! ;) We went through this very thing when we bought a new car last year. Paid cash, no financing. We shopped around at several dealerships who ALL insisted we were going to have to provide our SS# in order to complete the sale. They gave us the same BS about Homeland security needing this, blah, blah. Oddly enough, they were unable to provide any documentation to back this up. (We all know that car dealers/salesman are as honest as Eagle scouts, hmm?!) In any case, we told them we had no intentions of giving up this kind of sensitive information to a company that was NOT issuing us credit/financing, or was NOT a government entity. We said we would provide this info to the BMV (bureau of motor vehicles) instead. (If you have a drivers license on file in the state where you are purchasing, then the BMV already has your SS# on file.) They still insisted on having this so rather than argue, we decided to avoid the hassle completely and have our corporation purchase the car instead. The owner of the dealership was so aggravated that he wasn't able to snag our private, personal info that he refused to send us service agreements or ANY follow-up regarding the maintenance of our brand new car. Big deal. In the long run its going to hurt them more than us. They lost our service business, any future business, as well as the word of mouth 'advertising' we are sharing with anyone who wants to listen. We also contacted the car maker to let them know how we were treated. Scott, I just took a look at the website for the dealership where I bought my car. The dealership has two Fleet Managers. The one who sold me my car in 2013 is still there, as is the other one who was there at the time. The General Manager and two Sales Managers are the same. The Service Department Manager has changed, but many of the Service Consultants are the same. I don't know where you get your car serviced, but one thing you could do is find a service consultant who has been there for a while, and talk to him/her to find out which sales person they would recommend. The service consultant that I deal with when I take my car in has been there since 1989, and I trust him. Of course, I don't expect to ever buy another car. If I did, I'd want to upgrade the model that I currently have, and the model I'd go to starts at over $72,000 so I think I'll just hang with what I've got. :-) I think it is best to NOT mention trading in your current car when negotiating a price for a new(er) car. A dealer will NEVER give you the best deal on a trade-in because they will have to detail the car and sell it at a profit so they will always low-ball you. You're better off doing a private sale. But, if you really must trade-in the car to save some money on the new car, negotiate the price on the new car first, then ask how much they'll give you for your trade-in. Do you have Microsoft Excel? I ask because before I bought my car I created a spreadsheet that I used to see what the differences would be for financing different amounts at different percentage rates. I've plugged in new numbers for you -- taking wild guesses because I don't know how much you would spend or what percentage rate you would get on a loan. But, this shows two different amounts financed -- $35,000 and $20,000, both with the same three different loan rates -- 1.9%, 4%, and 10%. All are amortized over a 5-year period. You could do something like this in advance of your negotiations, to have a better idea of what different monthly payments would do to your loan. Creating the spreadsheet is really easy. In column A, write exactly what I've got. In column B, you enter formulas on lines 7 through 12. If you're familiar with Excel, you will know that you can then just do a copy/paste of the column B formulas to as many more columns as you think you'll need. Or, you can manually enter the formulas in each column, making sure to change the column designation to the correct one for each column. The formulas for column B are (and I will indicate the appropriate line number first): 7 =PMT((B4/12),B8,-B3) 8 =B5*12 9 =SUM(B7*12) 10 =SUM(B3) 11 =SUM(B12-B10) 12 =B9*B5 (The line numbers are bolded, and all of the formulas begin with the "equal" symbol. This forum doesn't allow showing more than one "space." There are NO spaces in the formulas.) So, you can't just plug in a new monthly payment amount if the salesman says "ok, let's say we make your payment $25 per month." You'd need to mess with the amount financed, and/or annual interest rate, and/or duration of loan. The monthly payment amount shows up automatically as a result of the formula based on the amounts entered on lines 3, 4, and 5. But if you've messed around with the spreadsheet before you go to the dealership, you'll have a good idea what the different monthly payment amounts will represent.

I am going to be blunt, and you will probably all hate me, but we do have freedom of speech here. This thread to me just seems so dated. Dealerships are "woke" to the idea that women make most of the car decisions, women do more internet research than men, women are buying cars with their own money not their husband's, and that having a sales experience that uses intimidation and pressure tactics hasn't worked for years. My friend is a saleswoman at a Honda dealership, and I have sent friends to her. Her role is to go over all the various options of the different models and see what the customer prefers. Yes she of course wants to close the deal, but car manufacturers realized years ago that the hard sell doesn't close the deal nearly as well as the reasoned, educational sell. Think of when you go in a department store, and the salesperson is hovering; you just want to leave. Same with cars, and the dealerships realized this years ago. They also realized years ago that a pleasant purchasing experience can mean the customer will come back for repairs (where the big profit is) and for their next car, and will refer their friends as well. For all these reasons, the intimidation sell is over, and has been for a long time. The purchase price has a little leeway, but since you can find prices all over the country on the internet, there's not much hard bargaining there. There is more negotiating--if you want it--over the trade-in (a more subjective evaluation than the purchase price of a car), and extras like winter mats and free oil changes. But the era of pushy salesman, and pressure tactics is over, as should be the era of the nervous woman with fluttering hands who'd rather do anything than buy a car at the scary dealership, and needs a man to accompany her. To the OP - feel your power. You are the purchaser of a car and the dealerships want your business. Walk in there knowing you are a powerful intelligent woman about to spend your money how you would like to spend it on the car you want. We are almost in 2019 at this point.

My DH uses an ashtray in the cup holder too. Works just as well. His has a "lid" so that you don't have to smell it if one is not smoking. Got it at Walmart in the auto dept.

Congrats on the new car. And yes, why would you want to smoke it your new car? I would lop off someone's head if they lit up in my Passat !!

Congrats! Nissan has a nice line up of cars.

My 2001 Car has 2 cigerette lighters for phone charger. Those lighters aren't just for cigerettes. I charge my flashlight on it too.

OK, now's our chance to get on samkaren's case about the (phew!) smoking. Maybe we could appeal to her on the basis of a car being worth much less at trade-in time because it stinks. (Even if the more important point is her health and the health of those around her.)

It's "your" car, "you" paid for it and you can do in it whatever you want and that's how I feel about our vehicles. I hope it gives you many years of good service.

Congratulations on your purchase! Enjoy your new car! I personally object to smoking in my car and my home. Hey, it's mine! I use my car ash tray to hold odd coins I get in change. DH regularly raids my coin tray.

Congratulations! Post a picture when you get it--it sounds really pretty.

One question: Will the "clunker" bill help you? I don't think it has passed yet, but it might be worth checking into.

Personally ... just like I don't expect smokers to fuss at me because I don't allow smoking in my truck, I don't fuss at smokers for smoking in their own vehicle. Doesn't make sense to me ...

35 MPG would make me giddy with joy! My car gets 24-30 MPG depending.

I made the mistake of test driving a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid a couple of weeks ago and man oh man do I want that car now! It's fabulous.

I always hated the non or ex-smokers that wouldn't let you smoke anywhere....I always took my own car so I could smoke.I quit smoking right now,but I swear I will NEVER be one of those ex-smokers that always annoyed me! LOL! It's my home,my car and if I choose to let someone smoke in them,that's up to me.Anyone is welcome to smoke here....

Enjoy! I just bought a new car too. I went to Carsense and the experience was wonderful. There is no negotiating, the price is the price. But we researched and looked around for a long time before we went there and the price was the best we could find. The car is a 2008 with only 7,000 miles on it and I got it for like half price and they gave me $2,000 for my 10 year old convertible (sebring). Of course I bought sebring convertible. It is absolutely beautiful - stone white with a black cloth roof. And the best of all they gave me a 3.9% intereste rate, so my payments are really low. I also purchased a bumper to bumper 6 year warranty. I love the car so far.

Thanks everyone. We are hoping to pick it up tonight but we will definately have it by the weekend.

I won't smoke in it right away...LOVE the new car smell!!!!

I am also one of those who doesn't smoke in other peoples cars or homes unless they say it's okay. I'm a courteous smoker and I always take others feelings into consideration.
