Awww.. it's actually very cute! More suited as a mural in a child's bedroom than a garage door though IMO. Is this in a subdivision?

neighbor has painted garage door bright red!

well, a quick look at my state's licensing info says that a permanent place of business that's not a residence is required. I'm not seeing a lookup feature, but they also have a sense of humor: "The process for obtaining an automobile dealer's license in New Mexico may seem as complicated as the Manhattan Project. You may even be tempted to camp out in front of the National Laboratory in Los Alamos in the hope that some brainy scientist will give you the secrets to break down the complicated code that seems to surround the licensing process." 3 a year? try 3 a week. Should I go out of my way to get this neighbor in trouble? Don't live right next to them. This post was edited by Violet.West on Sun, Sep 14, 14 at 19:22

No Warranty if you paint aluminum garage doors???
Q
Comments (4)
Most all products for exterior comes with paint and color specifications. Windows, entry doors, garage doors, columns, fret work, shutters, you name it, if it's a quality product and it's 'paintable' it probably has color specs to go with. No one ever talks about color specs, tho. Sometimes those specs are separate documentation and sometimes they are woven into the fine print of product warranties. Using the right kind of paint is important, but often the warranty voiding business has to do with using the wrong colors. It's all about LRV, light reflectance values. Google it for more information. In a nutshell, *most* warranties state you can not paint exterior products with colors that are darker than the original factory finish. The product was not engineered to withstand the energy, heat accumulation resulting from a darker paint color. You have to stay within the same value range (lightness/darkness) or lighter of the original factory applied color or risk voiding the warranty.

Paint & Primer Recommendations for Metal Garage Door
Q

We had a garage door to paint that was powder coated aluminum. The BM guys recommended priming with Stix which we did and then put the finish coat on it....so far so good. Only thing is the stix does dry really quickly so I had to paint it not in the sun and on a fairly cool and humid day for best results.

Are most wood garage doors (carriage) made w/ some manufactured panel?
Q

I SAY I want wood doors, but ... Can anyone convince me one way or the other about aluminum? I think I can get one in aluminum for about $500 cheaper. My requirements are - 1) Paint ANY color I want (even if that means black some years down in the future; it's south facing), and not have to jump through hoops to paint it thus negating any upfront cost savings 2) smooth, don't like the look of the fake wood grain, and the aluminum one is smooth 3) durability (not expecting kids to be playing ball against the surface, nor would I really expect anyone to accidentally hit it with their car (you'd have to be really blind that there's not a garage door in front of you), but what if someone bumps up against it? Is it going to show all that immediately? (course, it'd only be me that notices it, just like I happen to now notice that there are a couple of dents in the gutters; maybe them getting cleaned off and painted will make the obviousness of them go away?) Of course, not having to deal with wood rot would be nice... I'm not totally concerned about having to get an extra heavy duty garage door opener or springs. Its only a single car width. OK, so as I look at the picture of the aluminum one (it's Martin Door, Pinnacle), and I drove by and looked at one installed, I realize what I didn't like about it was that the back "panels" that are the vertical looking part seem to really stand out as separate pieces from panel to panel (panel used here to mean the 3 or 4 separate horizontal pieces that go up and down the roller track), rather than having the look of almost a one piece solid door from way back before garage door openers and tracks were invented. It's like they bow out towards the middle of the panel. :-(

Yes, Lydia. I was following some signs for a garage sale.
This is in a subdivision. Odd for a garage door! lol

I think it is unique and I love different. My HOA president would go nuts if he saw that on my garage door. That would add to my loving it. LOL

I must be living in the boonies. I've never seen anything painted on a garage door.

Wow. Love it. I saw one of Marilyn Monroe when I was in Provincetown, but you'd expect it there, not in a subdivision. Wish I had some artistic talent or I might try that myself.

Kat, have you ever noticed that house off to the right when you are headed North on I-5 between downtown and the U District that has a huge black and white painting of Bettie Page on the side of it? You can see it from the freeway. Not what I'd paint on the side of my house, but I think it's pretty neat.

There's a mural painted on a garage door in my city. It's attached to an old, though lovely, apartment complex from the 1920ties. Quite colorful---been there for several years.

My feeling on HOA's is that the only "Good" Homeowners' Association is a "Dead" Homeowners'Association.

Years ago, an associate of mine painted his garage door. It showed a road stretching off into the distance as an extension of hi driveway. The roadside bordered with an occasional evergreen and wild flowers. It was very sticking.

Yep, you guessed it. One night, a drunk drove up his drivewayand tried to continue his trip on the painted roadway - Crash. He drove through the door and smashed into a car parked inside. The garaged car was hit with enough force to drive it to the back wall of the garage and damaged that too.

After repairs, the garage owner redecorated his door, but chose a much different scene.

I like it. Maybe an odd couple (in a good way) live there hence the elephant in love with the giraffe. I'm thinking there is some hidden meaning to the owners.

I don't like it, it looks like the little elephant is dying or something. Would be much cuter if they were up and playing with eachother!

I like the premise, but not the actual painting.
It's distorted.....the poor elephant looks sick or deflated, as mentioned. The trunk goes to a point, and the giraffe's muzzle is too short and round.

Maybe it was done by the homeowner or a member of the family and that's why it's a little less-than-accurate.

I agree with Arkansas girl. I think it looks a little creepy. I have never seen a mural on a garage door....that I can think of, anyway.
