It may not be as bad as you think, but usually before they garnish wages, you are usually notified by letters ahead of time. But then the person doing the audit, (did they do an audit), may be a new hot shot kid who wants to make a statement. You might want to get a attorney specializing in dealing with IRS. Ask your CPA or Edward jones for a recomendation. Just get copies of your stuff, keep the original, and yes there is a 800# from IRS you can call for advice. Remember--keep a journal of information --who you talked to, full name and title and badge # if any, time of day, date, office address, phone # etc. Document everything. Sending you calming hugs

Thanks marie.....Of course I can't find what I need here at the house thank goodness the EJ does and my tax lady....The CPA I hired is good....has a great rep. Yes we got the letter to garnish the wages this is the soonest I could get into this certain CPA...I will ask about a Tax Lawyer etc...when I go back...I also know a smart one he is a friend so he will get me in even if after hours....so that would be great...it is just scary dealing with the IRS I have alwayas said just give them what they want but i know I paid the taxes....I mean the state of OK isn't after me...we get a refund every year from them...maybe they are just behind??? Nope no audit no nothing just all of a sudden letter from the IRS saying I owe this...the one thing we can file if I do owe is Innconet (sp) spouse...since this was done before we were married...so that may buy us some time....if it wwas just a little amount....then we would just pay but they kept last years refund 10k and want us to pay another 10k....and interst is accruing daily.....if they are wrong bet I don't get no interest on the money they took on our refund LOL Stacy

I can't offer advice, but it sounds like your "people" will get it straightened out.

Yes, the IRS strikes fear, but you will win.

You should have gotten a 1099 from EJ for the amount withdrawn and showing the amount withheld for FWT. This should have shown on your tax return as income with the increased amount paid in for taxes over and above anything from regular earnings. If your tax person did not do this, you would have had more taxes paid in than owed (usually) and would have gotten a larger than usual tax refund and do in fact need to repay a refund made in error.

Check your tax areturn. If it was claimed properly you will find this on page one of your 1040 on line 15B. If it's there then you reported properly and shouldn't have a problem.

Your tax preparer should be going to any meetings you have with the IRS to explain anything in question.

I have to laugh....last year, the IRS scared us to death with a similar letter to our daughter who was in college. They demanded more the $650. immediately OR ELSE! She had filed her own taxes for the very first time and didn't include the proceeds from the sale of some stock her grandma gave her at birth to help fund her education. When we went to the IRS office to figure things out, she ended up owing only $26.00, not the hundreds they were demanding.

So keep your chin up - it will probably be OK!!

DS got a letter once there was a mix up on his taxes, this was about 4 years ago and they were talking about 2 years before that...he had to file in two states cause had income from both and an accountant did the filing! Scared him when he got a letter and the accountant was able to settle it all with no problems! Hoping its that easy for you!

One thing you need to check on is whether the place that withheld the taxes PAID them to the IRS. How many times have the little people gotten screwed by non-payment of others.

Jokes aside, look over your copy of your tax forms. I'm betting that tax withheld by Ed Jones was NOT entered on your tax statement - merely an oversight. (Your tax preparer may not have had the information.) If so, this can be cleared up quickly at your meeting with the IRS. You will need to show documentation that taxes, and the amount, were withheld when you made the withdrawal. The IRS may ask you to file an amended tax statement, but let's hope that can be handled during your visit.

If you have documentation from Edward Jones re the amount withdrawn and the portion of it paid to you and the portion paid to the IRS, it should get settled quickly and with minimal hassle.

If Edward Jones took it from your account but neglected to forward it to the IRS ... hope that you have documnetation from them of how much went where.

If they didn't pay it ... they may be in some hot water ... so they may try some covering of their rear end.

oh believe me they watch everybody.......my hubby and I own 2 construction businesses,we hear all the time,we have an accountant and still theres problems,when mailman comes to the door with a registered kletter,oh my,but weve had registered letter for 6.00 we owed IRS,probably cost more to mail the letter,youll just have to pay it with penaltys.
and those people they pick to check them out.. they do,we got it 2 times now.Theygo thru EVERYTHING...

Talked to the IRS and got all my stuff faxed to the CPA....I will go back in monday and we will go from their...You guys are so right about the worrying part...I am choosing not too....The CPA said if we end up oweing the money then he will get probaby be able to get the penatlies taken off and not garhish the wages just work with the IRS and he said we could just have them take our return this year or get a letter from Brians boss that instead of garnishing the wages we can pay them in full in Dec. when we get our bonus....will let you all knnow after I go back to the CPA monday.....Stacy
