they spread but do not climb on their own. they do not have any tendrins or means of attaching themselves. that vine can become a noxious weed in the far south so if you are in zones 8B or warmer be careful it will take over and be hard to eradicate lol ~ liz

And the blossoms will fall off into your pond. Lots of blossoms if it is the kind of potato vine I am thinking of.

You might consider a type of ivy vine instead. Or some type of floating plant. Check with either the pet store, or garden store. Or google pond plants. Do you have snail, slugs etc? They like moist places too. So do small water snakes.

My sweet potato vines grow like crazy but they never bloom and they have not ever climbed a trellis, they grow huge potatoes every year tho!

My black one blooms. It has lavender blooms that looks sort of like a morning glory. They mound but they don't climb.
I'd try a mandevilla.

I try to always plant one of the tricolor Sweet Potato vines, 'Ipomoea batatas'. It's green with white and purple markings. It looks great with my dark purple petunias (another plant I have to grow each year in honor of my Great-Grandmother Betty.

However, it doesn't vine "up;" it trails down. I always put it in my large 24" planter, near the edge. It spreads around the pot and trails all the way to the ground. With petunias around it, and something tall on a trellis above it, it can be quite spectacular!

I'm going to "harvest" the potato roots this fall and see if I can overwinter them in the basement for next year's plantings.

Thank you all. I don't think it will spread too much because this is in the north and i'll have to take it in for the winter or just toss it out.

I live in MN, and believe me that plant will get too big for that pot and the location.

It's beautiful right now, but is a fast grower. When it gets too big you can move it to a place where it can spread out. I love the bright colors of those plants.
