Book recommendation...Ann of Green Gables

My 8 year old DGD has read one of these books (an easy version??), and wants more of the set, or of that series that's geared for her reading level. She's in 2nd grade, and is struggling to read, so I want to encourage it. I don't want one that's too hard, and can't tell when I look it up in Amazon. She likes it when there are a few pictures, and larger print. Any suggestions?

I read them all as a child. Fantastic books. The entire series is, if I remember, on the same level.
Those old series were so good. Has she tried a Bobbsey Twins book? They are all available on Amazon, and identified as age 9-12 level (frankly, I think they're more like 8-10).

Also try little house on the prairie. Both my girls read those really early.

Casey - Thank you for the enthusiastic recommendation of Little Women. I will certainly read it, and perhaps read it to my granddaughters. They love being read to, even though they are 9 and are avid readers on their own. And I guessed that you had probably visited PEI and Green Gables, being almost next door to you! Pam - I will be sure to get the unabridged version of Little Women and also get An Old Fashioned Girl. You reminded me again about the filmed version of Anne of Green Gables - I will have to watch them, as I don't think I have ever seen all the episodes. I agree, the actors are so very suitable to their roles! Rhizo - my mother's name was Ann, so clearly my grandmother had never read about Anne and the importance of the 'e' LOL !

Terrific leftontheinside. Ok soapbox moment: If schools brought back the arts in schools instead of only teaching to tests, we might all be more visually educated. Ok off of my soapbox now. ;) Again I highly recommend the book I mentioned above. It helped me tremendously when I was designing my home, even though much of it I knew already. Then after reading the book, start visually looking at all homes in your neighborhood and on the internet to see which ones truly work and which ones are just visual messes. BTW: Here is one of the very first elevations that was given to me by my draftsman. The bottom is what I have now and I am hoping to make one or two more changes as per advice. That will depend on if it can be done or not. However, notice how the first one is again a mish mosh. I said craftsman and the draftsman threw every craftsman idea onto the house, except he didn't do true craftsman. He did what I call "builder craftsman". Our front door did have to move to the other street (I'm on a corner) because of zoning, but overall you can still see how just about everything changed and became more simple to give it more harmony.

Sara - good question on the pollen vs nectar. I taught 2nd grade for decades and never had a child who didn't LOVE the Junie B. Jones books.

I still have my Bobbsey Twins books from when I was a child...and did I ever love those! When I reread parts of them as an adult, however, I immediately picked up on the inescapable presence of racism.

Sophie has the original set, but I'm pretty sure she has an easier version, or a condensed version as well. I'm sending her to check....

Okay, she's back, and she brought two. :) She has one that's a "Great Illustrated Classic". It says on the back cover, "In a specially adapted version by Eliza Gatewood Warren". It's hardcover, has 14 chapters, has large print, and has a black and white picture on every other page. I'm flipping through, and I'm thinking it might still be difficult for your grand-daughter if she's struggling to read.

The second is a "Troll Illustrated Classic". It's "Retold by Joanne Mattern" and "Illustrated by Renee Graef". It's a thin paperback, but there's still quite a bit of writing to it. I think it would be appropriate. There are colour pictures on every page. It seems to be easier reading.

I THINK the first one I mentioned is simply condensed, whereas the second is rewritten at an easier reading level. I could scan a page of each to give you a sample, if you'd like....

Oh, I'm just re-reading your post. I'm not sure if what your granddaughter already read was the original story or another in the series.... Both that I told you about are adaptations of the original.

By all means get the "Little House Books" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We had a chapter from Little Houuse in the big woods in one of our readers and Mom would read it to me thereafter I got all the books from the library and now still own them.

When I saw the title of this thread, I just could not let it pass! It's A n n with an e! :) Don't forget the e. I love that scene in the video with Anne telling the teacher how to spell her name.

I agree with Junie B. Jones books. They are up to date with what going on in a childs lifes today. Here is a website for 2nd graders
