There was a discussion on The View the other day about wearing them. Only Barbara Walters said she did, although she went bare-legged that day. I rarely wear a dress--and then it's under protest--but are they really outdated?

No, no, no, but I probably still have a drawful of them. I have one pair of heels and 2 "court" dresses for when I have to make an appearance in court. Both dresses are purposefully long enough to wear knee high stockings with.

Insecticides and fungicides may be dangerous in different ways. That does not necessarly mean that one is less toxic than the other (in the long run). Some pesticide problems may not show up for many years and in a way unexpected such that that "route" was never tested for. The following recent research scientific paper is just one example of "the unexected/not tested". Title: Combined exposure to endocrine disrupting pesticides impairs parturition, causes pup mortality and affects sexual differentiation in rats Authors: P. R. Jacobsen, S. Christiansen, J. Boberg, C. Nellemann and U. Hass Authors affiliation: Department of Toxicology and Risk Assessment, National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, Søborg, Denmark Published in: International Journal of Andrology, volume 33, pages 434��"442, (2010). ABSTRACT: "Risk assessment is currently based on the no observed adverse effect levels (NOAELs) for single compounds. Humans are exposed to a mixture of chemicals and recent studies in our laboratory have shown that combined exposure to endocrine disrupters can cause adverse effects on male sexual development, even though the doses of the single compounds are below their individual NOAELs for anti-androgenic effects. Consequently, we have initiated a large project where the purpose is to study mixture effects of endocrine disrupting pesticides at low doses. In the initial range-finding mixture studies, rats were gavaged during gestation and lactation with five doses of a mixture of the fungicides procymidone, mancozeb, epoxyconazole, tebuconazole and prochloraz. The mixture ratio was chosen according to the doses of each individual pesticide that produced no observable effects on pregnancy length and pup survival in our laboratory and the dose levels used ranged from 25 to 100% of this mixture. All dose levels caused increased gestation length and dose levels above 25% caused impaired parturition leading to markedly decreased number of live born offspring and high pup perinatal mortality. The sexual differentiation of the pups was affected at 25% and higher as anogenital distance was affected in both male and female offspring at birth and the male offspring exhibited malformations of the genital tubercle, increased nipple retention, and decreased prostate and epididymis weights at pup day 13. The results show that doses of endocrine disrupting pesticides, which appear to induce no effects on gestation length, parturition and pup mortality when judged on their own, induced marked adverse effects on these endpoints in concert with other pesticides. In addition, the sexual differentiation of the offspring was affected. This as well as the predictability of the combination effects based on dose-additivity modelling will be studied further in a large dose-response study." -------------------------------------------- The first part of the INTRODUCTION SECTION of the full paper may be of interest: "Animal laboratory experiments have shown that in utero exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including some pesticides can cause adverse effects on male reproductive development (Foster, 2006; Gray et al., 2006; Hass et al., 2007; Metzdorff et al., 2007; Christiansen et al., 2008). Individual pesticides alone have so far not been shown to contribute to adverse human effects at relevant exposure levels. However, some studies indicate increased prevalence of cryptorchidism and decreased penile length in sons of women working as gardeners or Many EDCs have been found as mixtures in humans (Blount et al., 2000; Swan et al., 2005), including children (Brock et al., 2002; Swan et al., 2005; Main et al., 2006). Damgaard et al. (2006) observed an association between congenital cryptorchidism and the levels of certain organochlorine pesticides in mothers’ milk (Damgaard et al., 2006). Earlier, Pierik et al. (2004) identified paternal exposures to pesticides and smoking as factors associated with these congenital malformations. These initial observations in epidemiological studies points in the same direction as laboratory experiments with oestrogenic or anti-androgenic chemicals in which substantial mixture effects occurred even though each individual chemical was present at low, ineffective doses (Rajapakse et al., 2002; Silva et al., 2002; Hass et al., 2007; Metzdorff et al., 2007; Christiansen et al., 2008, 2009). Some pesticides such as vinclozolin and procymidone antagonize competitively the androgen receptor (AR) binding of androgens and affect mainly the reproductive development in male offspring (Kelce et al., 1997; Ostby et al., 1999). Other pesticides such as mancozeb and propineb act mainly via disruption of the thyroid hormones and are mainly suspected to disrupt brain development (Hurley, 1998; Hass & Axelstad, Personal Communication). Our detailed research on prochloraz, combined with studies on other azole fungicides such as tebuconazole and epoxyconazole, indicates that these pesticides have the ability to react through several endocrine disrupting mechanisms, and to induce various endocrine disrupting effects (Vinggaard et al., 2005a,b; Taxvig et al., 2007). We have shown that prochloraz induced anti-androgenic effects in rats in vivo in a Hershberger test as well as in a developmental toxicity study (Vinggaard et al., 2002, 2005a). In addition, our studies show that prochloraz increases gestation length and indicate that prochloraz may also affect thyroid hormone levels and cause effects on the sexually dimorphic development of the brain (Vinggaard et al., 2002, 2005a). Both tebuconazole and epoxyconazole increase gestation length and pup mortality and furthermore, these pesticides virilise female pups, and affect steroid hormone levels in foetuses and ⁄ or dams (Taxvig et al., 2007)."

Wow Christina77! I applaud your resolve and determination. Your protagonists were attacking from all sides in their futile attempt to sway you to the dark-side (the erroneous belief that hose w/open-toed shoes looks tacky), but you wouldn't budge. I tip my hat to you. I am a man and I do not claim to speak for all men, however I do know of a good number of men who share my opinion. I believe that open-toed shoes with sheer sandalfoot pantyhose is sexy as long as you have a good pedicure going on and you aren't wearing any cheap (i.e. saggy, cheap looking) pantyhose or reinforced toe pantyhose. In fact, once you are spotted wearing them you and the other young ladies who also opted to wear pantyhose with open-toed shoes, I dare say that you became the center of attention just as you said and the men (and some ladies) probably couldn't take their eyes off of you. The pantyhose haters are indeed entitled to their respective opinions and I wouldn't recommend you waste a moment of your time trying to persuade them to see things otherwise. It seems there are two camps: (1) those who love pantyhose, and (2) those vehemently opposed. I bet you looked elegant and stunning. Stay true to yourself and don't change for anyone!

Oldgardener, I have worn closed toed shoes for years, and I found these at a great clearance price so I went for them. I would love to wear them to work which is why I asked. Amyfiddler, Like I said in the original post, we ARE allowed to wear peep toes, but they have to be worn with nylons or tights. Trust me, some of the rules are pretty contradictory, but I didn't write them so I just have to follow them! AmyGibby, why would I post the question if I didn't want some feedback? And I DID try the dancers tights and they work just fine.

Thank you. :) You're probably right eld. I overthink things sometimes. I always have to remind myself to just stop planning and do at some point. I bought a colourful coverup yesterday and will look for a high necked sleeveless swim top to go under my tankini. Hopefully I won't have your problem daisychain, with riding up, as mine isn't tightly fitted. We have confronted BIL at various times and the usual remorse and empty promises occur. Hopeless cause I'm afraid. It would be nice if no alcohol were in the summer mix, but that isn't fair to all those who can handle it. I will try the deadpan stare and walk away though, thanks for that suggestion! He might not see it through his alcohol haze and probably will still think he's hilarious. He's pretty thickheaded. People used to laugh with him, which I found astonishing, but not so much anymore.

Yes, yes, yes! I wear business suits to work and will rarely, if ever, come to the office without pantyhose. Do not like the flip-flop shoe look with no hose that many women wear now.

They're saying no one wears them any more. Guess they went the way of nylons, garters and girdles! (Not to mention 45's, cassettes, coke bottles, etc!).

When I have to wear stockings, I wear the ones with the high thigh elastic tops.
Very comfortable.

Barbara Walters compared how hose enhance your legs like a sheer nightie is more sexy than being naked. I see the point--sort of. I'm going to a wedding (in the dreaded dress) and think I'll skip the pantyhose since it's on July 4th and will be so hot. But somehow, I just don't feel really dressed without them. I do slather on the fake tan stuff so I don't look like Snow White! Guess my age is showing--AGAIN!

I don't wear a dress/skirt very often but always wear them when I do. I can't stand the barefoot look with nice shoes & a nice dress. Sorry, JMHO. I know it's popular, and cooler, to go without nylons, but my feet don't look that great without something to cover them up. :-)

I don't but only because I haven't been wearing skirts or dresses. I don't think I could physically wrangle myself into a pair of nylons right now, at 9 months pg.

I find it ludicrous though that they're going 'out of style'. That's like make-up going out of style. Sure, some women can get away with no make-up but most look better with a little bit. Most legs look better with some coverage. I can see why the young chicks would be going without them but my pale, sometimes stubbly, legs wouldn't be caught dead in a skirt or dress and no hose.

Nonononononononononononono!!! We were talking about this the other day. I hate pantyhose and try noever to wear them. I swear, they must have been invented and designed by a man in order to torture women. The only time I'll wear hose is to a dressy event, and then it's thigh-highs. They're pretty and comfortable, and I think they are much sexier than pantyhose. So does DH ;o)

I don't wear pantyhose and I don't wear a bra, especially in summer. I'm very liberated and comfortable.

I think the term pantyhose is used loosely to mean any type of stocking, knee or thigh high also.

My legs used to be those long shapely legs that go up to... but now with veins bulging and basal cell carsinoma scars, I definitely wear stockings, thigh highs, whatever.

I can't imagine not wearing anything between my sweaty feet and my shoe.

Hmmm, but I respectfully disagree. The definition of pantyhose is found in the following (and I'm laughing my butt of because it seems it was invented by a man!) ~

Allen Gant Senior invented pantyhose. In 1959, Glen Raven Mills of North Carolina introduced pantyhose -- underpants and stockings all in one garment. With the addition of an opaque nylon top, panthose eliminated the need for multiple "foundation" garments. In 1965, Glen Raven Mills developed a seamless pantyhose version that coincided with the introduction of the miniskirt. Allen Grant Senior is a descendant of John Gant, who founded the textile mill in 1902.

Umm, if I were to wear those thigh high thingies, there would be a 'hose- line' ..... Sometimes I get hoseline with pantyhose because the stocking part is so different from the panty part.... any body else with me here? If they made the elastic part maybe - say 5 inches wider or so it might work......

The elastic on thigh-high hose is about 3-4 inches wide...a band of elasticized lace.

I wouldn't wear a dress without wearing panty hose...even a dressy dress in the summer...I think getting all dressed up and no hose is tacky...

I don't wear pantyhose except for costumes because I don't wear dresses. But if I did I would wear them. Most women don't have the legs to go bare. Tanned,young legs in a summer dress are fine. Pale stumps peeking out from under a dressy dress are skanky. Legs in hose are sexy.

I've always liked panty hose. They sort of smoothed everything out under clothes. I don't understand women who say they are uncomfortable but will squeeze themselves into "body smoothers" (girdles really) and stuff their feet into high heels two sizes too small. LOL

I wear hose daily. Skirts, slacks, jeans, shorts. It's rare for me not to wear them at home, too, as they prevent leg ache. IMO, skirts or dress shoes without hose is tacky. I know that's the 'style', but not for me. I don't find panty
hose to be all that uncomfortable.

I'm sure a lot of you remember garter belts &/or garters??? Mmmm - which was the great torture...one of those or the 'modern' panty hose? Give me seamless panty hose ANY day over a garter belt and hose w/seams.

Absolutely! I don't feel 'dressed' without them. In the heat of summer I don't but that is because I usually wear capris or cropped slacks. But if I need business, cocktail or formal attire I have hose on. Only the young, firm or those in tremendous shape don't benefit from hose. My legs need them!

Panty hose make my legs itch. If I must wear dressy shoes I wear dress pants and knee highs. I've never tried thigh highs before, but after reading about them here I might give them a try.

I have a bunch of pantyhose which I need to cut up for tomato ties. I'ts been 20 years since I wore them!

There has been no need to get dressed up for more than 20 years, so all the clothes that required hose of some sort have gone away. Any shoes that require hose only need knee-highs, and I have a bunch of them too...some even have the elastic intact!

I really don't like to expose my legs and feet to too much scrutiny, stockings or not, because of spider veins, toenail fungus, and other uglies. Heavy "control" hose will mask a lot of misfortunes, but they are uncomfortable. And I would have to buy some new ones. Heaven forfend!

I seldom wear dresses or skirts anymore. When I do, I like the ones that are almost ankle-length because I find them easier to deal with. With those, I would probably go without hose during the summer. With shorter dresses or skirts or for a formal occasion or certain business occasions, I do wear hose. I think my lily-white legs look better with them.

I'm with Jannie. No pantyhose, no bra...and no underwear of any kind. Well, I suppose if I got dressed up, I'd wear them but they would look silly with rubber clogs (Crocs) and that's the only kind of shoes I wear. ;)

I always wear panty hose with skirts and dresses, no bare legs for me and this is to church or anywhere I need to dress up. If I am wearing pants I just wear knee highs, have to have hose on my feet. Might be old fashioned but I still like the look.

Only when I get dressed up, which isn't very often! Knee highs with slacks, when I wear them. Usually it's jeans or shorts, so it's socks or sneaker socks. I used to love the thigh highs, but can't find any that fit properly now.

I don't like the bare-legged look, even on long, thin, young, tan legs. I sure don't get the look with sandals in the middle of winter in the north! Surely pantyhose and shoes can't be as uncomfortable as bare legs and feet in winter. And bare legs and feet take an awful lot of maintenance to be presentable. Not for me!

It's not that I'm stuffy or anything, and I don't pincurl my hair or wear a girdle, but gosh...

If I wear a dress other than a casual sundress or denim skirt, I do wear some sort of hose, panty or otherwise. I always wear hose under dress pants, too. I don't like the bare-legged look, especially for business.

When I'm in court, though, it's exactly like the WSJ article - all the older women (me included) wear hose of some sort under skirts and pants, and mostly all of the younger women have bare legs. Many of them look pretty, but they also look under-dressed and unprofessional to my older eyes.

I don't get the thing about pantyhose being uncomfortable, either, except on the really hot, hazy days in the middle of summer. I can't stand the feeling of bare feet in dress shoes. My feet just sweat and stick or rub.

I'll try the thigh highs. We're going to my niece's wedding and I have to wear a dress. Even with the self-tanning stuff, it just doesn't seem dressed to me without hose. I just wondered how far out of the loop I was. But glad to hear both sides.

I haven't worn them in years but I never get dressed up either. As a matter of fact I don't own a dress or skirt. I do have to wear compression hose and I hate them. I am a barefoot kind of gal and find hose of any kind restricting and uncomfortable.

I wore a pair 2 years ago to a funeral, and that's been it. It's a wonder we didn't trip and fall putting those things on.
