guess he was enjoying the sun :o)

Maybe the copperhead ate them. They also eat other snakes. :)

I really don't think so Marilyn, the king snakes were about 5 to 6 feet long. The copperhead was less than
3 feet. I surely hope not. Maybe they were taking a siesta.

Oh my!

How proud you must be

I think I would have had a heart attack!

I'm glad you didn't step on it, copperhead bites make humans really, really sick. Our pets tolerate them much better than we do, but I still don't want them getting bitten. Consequently, we also kill poisonous snakes that get close to the house and pets. We had a copperhead right next to our back deck and a pygmy rattler in our drive. Beeswax has been bitten twice and one of other cats at least once, maybe twice. Watching their paws swell up to about 8 times normal size is scarier than heck. If it was a neck bite, it would probably suffocate them. So, yeah- poisonous near the house means it's going to die. And this is the weather they come out in, too- hot, hot, hot.

YOU GO GIRL!! The only good copperhead is a DEAD copperhead..

Yikes!!!

A cooperhead would have me running for my dh too. Poisonous snakes are not welcome around here either! My girls and I run around barefoot so much, that would have me looking for the whole slinky family. Thankfully we don't have many snakes near our house.
I'm glad you didn't step on it. Hope your king snakes get to business.

I'm lucky I live in New York State. We have an occssional garter snake, that's all. I know there are absolutely no poisonous snakes here. Too many streets, construction, etc. I read once that an occasional Rattler is seen high up in the Adirondack mountains, which is part of the Appalachian Chain. But I never go there. If I want to commune with nature, I head for a local park or beach. And I remember my friend Sue lived in Corpus Christi Texas for a year. She recalls finding a Rattler outside her home, She simply got a hoe and chopped off its head.

I am certainly not a fan of snakes, especially "bad" snakes, Yikes.....A week ago, we had a Diamond Back Rattler on our back patio and a neighbor(Mr. Macho, as we call him) came over and shot it....My daughter told me there is a way of telling if a snake is poisoness by looking at the eyes and seeing which way the slits go....Now who in the world is going to get that close????Silly girl!

But, I agree, copperheads or any bad snakes, don't belong on porches, patios or any where near humans.....

Yikes - I would be running North still.

No snakes - not now - not ever. There are
few things that I absolutely DETEST - snakes are #1
on that list.

And, yes, I know all the good they do - but they
can do it in someone else's backyard. They don't
invite me to their house - I don't invite them to
mine. LOL

jannie, I hope you continue to be snake free in your area of NY, but there are plenty of venomous snakes throughout the state. At least a couple of different kinds of rattlesnakes live in NYS, as well as copperheads. With such vast forested areas, you can count on lotsa snakes.

Irishdancermom, if you still live in PA, as your member page states, your snake wasn't a diamondback....which is strictly a southern animal. One snake that is VERY commonly mistaken for a rattler is the non-venomous hog nose snake. It's coloring and (fake) aggressive behavior fool a heck of a lot of people. Really, even a knowledgeable person would have to take a good second look to make sure. They even rattle their tails like a rattle snake, lol.

I look for every stick I see on the ground to start moving...I really am scared now. The copperhead family has got to be around somewhere. With the heat we are having they are looking for a cool place to rest. Hope they find it in our woods and stay away from our home!!!
