One of my doggies was killed today

One of my dogs escaped out of the dog lot today and was chasing cars.
My wife saw her laying in the ditch across the road, already gone.
Sophie was a very sweet dog, I called her "my little princess."
We got her as a small puppy. Our other dog, Homer, raised her.
Those two romped and played and romped and played.
He was protective of her and would be so mad when she would get out of the lot.
It's a big dog lot; 6500 square feet. There is plenty of room to run and play.

Cindy is upset. Later on when the shock wears off I will probably be upset, too.
Homer is wondering around the house. I think he is looking for Sophie.
Burial will be tomorrow afternoon somewhere in the yard.

Thanks for the replies Auteck. The light green color is a combination of two things. First, believe it or not, almost everything you see is new growth. I got two inches in just nine days. The established Rye is under all of that hairy light green. I cut very low.. 5/8ths regularly, and took it down to 3/8ths before aerifying. Second, when I put the seed down, I sprayed for Pythium to prevent seed damp-off. I use a spray-tracking dye that is light green, and it is masking the dark green of the established lawn a little. My yearly overseeding is probably more like a yearly renovation. I core aerify the bejeezus out of it leaving more holes than soil, and frankly, probably not a whole lot of previous season turf survives. I'll post an update pic in a couple of weeks when it's dark, short, and striped appropriately! @SoccerDad. The cultivar is Lesco Low-Mow Double Eagle TTPR. Irrigation is 1.5 inches weekly without fail. Fertilization is every 30 days (except during deep summer) with 24-0-11. Bayer Aliette is sprayed every 14 days from June 1st through November to combat Pythium Blight. Daconil is sprayed every 14 days offset from the Aliette to prevent Brown Patch, and all other disease. Mowing is every other day (in season) at 5/8ths with a 27" Tru-Cut reel mower.

I guess I'll never really know since I didn't see the entire croaking process. I doubt it was lack of water since we've been in this blasted drought and I'm very diligent about watering everything. Fungus - a really possibility. A few other things got the ugly black spots after the cold snap, but I saw those and treated promptly. I tend to pay a bit more attention to the smaller plants, so I notice odd things. I really wish I would have examined those dropped leaves. Even though they were dried up, I probably would have seen the fungus rings if that's what the problem was. Stacy - How true. Even though I don't like killing plants I didn't have any period of mourning with the demise of this one. Don't get me wrong. When this one bloomed, I couldn't get enough of those flowers. The fragrance, flower shape and color was simply gorgeous. It was a large plant however and I was always a bit resentful of the amount of space it took up in the winter - prime growing space too since it needed so much light. I just couldn't make the decision to trade it away or give it away. Now I don't. I guess everything works out in the end. K

I LOVE Australian Shepherds (and Border Collies), but I would never get either one because of their high activity needs. I know myself, and I wouldn't be able to work with a high energy dog enough. As others have said, if you want a dog that is not high energy, an Aussie is NOT the dog for you. Just because what you saw was a smaller version, does not mean they have any less energy or will be any less destructive without the proper amount of activity and training. The Aussie (as he is lovingly nicknamed) is a very active dog that needs a great deal of exercise on a daily basis to prevent him from become bored or frustrated and developing destructive habits. Because of their high energy level, combined with high intelligence, Aussies need to be given a "job" to perform, be it shepherding the children, herding livestock or competing in dog events. One of the most frequent reasons Aussies are turned over to rescue groups is because their owners didn't realize how much energy the breed has, and weren't willing to channel that energy through training. Aussies are also quite demanding of their owners' time and attention and want to be constantly with them, following them from room to room in the house, and going along in the car or truck on errands. They can be highly territorial and protective of their masters' possessions, which can cause serious difficulties unless controlled with proper training.

Happy Birthday to your guys, too! What kind of dog is Monty Man? Great Dane? We are having a gathering on Saturday. Neighbors who all walk their doggies with us will come go swimming and the doggies will be there, too. We are still trying to get Amos and Andi in the pool on their own. Amos wants to, will pick up his ball from the water and will swat at it with his front paws but puts the brakes on when it comes to going all the way in. I'm hoping when the other Labs go in, he will want to join them.

So sorry. We had one female Westie who would NOT be trained to come when called. Once she got out the door, we would only waste our time trying to get her back until she was good and ready (hungry). She ran across a busy street behind our house one time too many. We've only had males except for Rosie.

When you are ready to adopt another dog, let me encourage you to look at your local animal shelter. I went to ours with a friend in January or February one year. I was amazed at all the pure bred, adult dogs that they had. These dogs looked healthy and well-cared for. I asked one of the employees why there were so many nice dogs there. She told me that it happens every Christmas. People bring their family dog to the shelter and give it up so that they can buy a new puppy for Christmas. I was flabbergasted. So do check out your local animal shelter. There might be a lovely and loving dog there looking for someone to love.

So sorry. She was very cute. What a terrible accident. I am hurting too. My kitty died on Christmas while napping under the Christmas tree. We knew he was quite sick and wanted to be in familiar surroundings. I still cry every day,

If dogs could only understand the danger of the street and cars. Our dog often does not come when called and recently ran across a busy street in the dark. We finally caught him, but both my husband and I were practically shaking.

I'm so sorry you lost your beautiful dog and know how it hurts.

SheilaJoyce, your message broke my heart. I see dogs and cats on Kijiji all the time. It's amazing how many sudden "allergies" there are, and other reasons for throwing their pet to the curb. I want to bring them ALL home!

I am sorry to hear of this - hopefully, you can figure out how he escaped and get it fixed. My beautiful Border Collie died the day after Memorial Day, 2013 - we are still heart-broken.

I have a Dachshund who went missing for four hours over a year ago. I was sure he was killed on our busy main street and side street plus alley. Thankfully he was found trying to climb a tree after a squirrel. Now he is never let loose in the yard, because he always finds a way to escape the fenced in yard. He's always tethered. Has no street sense and on walks would chase motorcycles if not on a leash.

I feel so sorry for you. It's not your fault. It is what it is. This often happens thru no fault of the owners.

My heart is breaking for you. Sophie was a beautiful girl. I, too, have a pound pup that I've never been able to train to come. She is a beautiful standard poodle who has escaped several times and I was always terrified she would have the same fate. She has been very lucky.

I totally concur with what Sheilajoyce said. When you are ready for a new companion for Homer give the pound a try. There are so many beautiful and sweet dogs available. I adopted the sweetest little bichon/poodle mix as my 3rd dog in October and I love her to pieces. Best wishes to you and your family, and give Homer a hug for me!

I have been doing ok with this. Homer barked and called her all night last night. He ran all over the lot looking for her everywhere. He came in at 6 this morning and searched the house. Then he went back out.
Cindy has never had a dog before Homer and she got really attached. Homer was dropped at our house as a big puppy. He moved onto our front porch and wouldn't leave. It was in the spring time so we had the windows open and he could hears us watching TV and talking. Cindy tried to take him a bowl of water but he growled at her. A few days later Homer got under the window and was whining. Cindy wanted to try again so this time she took him a big pan of leftover spaghetti. Homer loved it. When he finished that pan he picked it up and brought it back to Cindy for more. He has been ours ever since.
We decided that Homer needed a companion so we went to the shelter and got one. But the one we picked turned out to be dangerous so we had to take her back. She was a loving dog but she had to be the only dog.
Then we found a dog like Sophie but a little older thru PetFinder. We went to meet someone about the dog but with the time difference (we're on central time, Chattanooga is on Eastern) we missed each other. But while we were at the meet up spot, a car came in and stopped and put out a sign advertising free puppies. We looked at them and picked Sophie. She turned out to be a perfect companion for Homer.
Except she wouldn't stay in the dog lot. No matter what we did she managed to escape. She wouldn't go far. She always stayed near Homer.
Sophie was with us for 3 and a half years. She looked much the same grown up.
It rained pretty good all day today so burial will be tomorrow.

She was a pretty pup.

Such lucky dogs to have such a big area to run in. Too bad she liked cars. We had a car chasing dog years ago.
