Kitchen Remodel - Need Help With Granite Counter Color

Hi everybody-We're in the 'home stretch' of our kitchen remodel, and are having a hard time deciding on a color for our granite countertops. We have "Painted Linen" (creamy/off white) wall cabinets, "Tea Leaf" green cabinets for the island, and a hammered copper farmhouse sink. Floors are a faux-slate tile called "Sedona Slate Cedar". Photo is attached.

We initially thought a goldish-copper granite might work. However, after bringing back a few samples from the granite yard, those colors seem too similar to the floor. We're now thinking possibly going darker (a dark brown with a consistent pattern).

Any suggestions/feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi. I'm getting a new granite countertop myself--it will be installed on Tuesday! So I have been doing lots and lots of looking at granite-- both in person (went to lots of warehouses) and in magazines. The trend is definitely toward lighter stone countertops, judging by what I see in the the magazines. (Carrera marble is also getting more popular in those designer kitchens, for some inexplicable reason. Marble is not practical in a kitchen, so many people are trying to imitate that look with certain granites, like white river. ) This trend toward lighter granite was verified by several granite sales people at the warehouses and fabricators I spoke with. Of course, this may be a regional thing. I live in Maryland, near D.C. , where everyone and his brother, it seems, is getting granite! Have you thought about checking out a lighter stone, like a cream or white? (such as Bianco romano, white shivakashi, Colonial Cream, white river, among others.)I am getting Harvest Cream, which is similiar to Colonial cream. It has a white or off-white background with lots of golden accents that pick up the color of my cabinets, and grey/black and taupe accents and a light sprinkling of garnet(burgandy) in there too. My cabinets are honey-spice maple (installed 10 years ago with a formica countertop). We did some minor remodeling that called for a new countertop--so I was so glad I didn't spend the big bucks for the corian that was so popular back then, and that I had an excuse to now get granite! I'm not sure how dark your "autumn" cabinets are, but you should try to have some contrast. If your cabinets are dark or medium dark, I think that a very light granite would provide a great contrast with your cabinets and darker floor, but that is just my personal opinion. Are you going for a traditional or contemporary look? Black tends to look "modern". If you do want a very dark countertop, I would think that a very dark brown would look better than black with your mocha floors(which I assume is a very dark brown.) You probably already have thought of this, but when you go to the granite warehouses to select your slab, bring a cabinet door and piece of your flooring to see how it all looks together. Another thing to consider is what you want on your backsplash. If you want a very "busy" stone or tile, then you should select a granite that would not look too busy, so the darker colors would work well for that, usually. I am going to go with a tumbled white travertine backsplash. If I went with anything busier, it would "fight" with my granite. Hope this helps. Hope this helps.

for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. They are probably not super cheap, but it would be worth it for me. http://www.miusartmosaics.com/arabesque-lantern-beacon-copper-tile-in these would also work. the site is here: maybe they have them in stock.http://www.westsidetile.com/arabesque-tiles/ i like this one too. notice the copper faucet. beautiful w/the glass mosaic. if you got the cream countertop, this would look amazing w/your floors. this last one is a copper colored slate/quartzite.

Sorry TCB - just realized you are the OP :) - and just re read that you plan to change the hardware....are you doing this everywhere in the home? Will the ORB be on all door hardware throughout the home? I'd strongly suggest focusing on the tile (white with matching grout or subtlety darker grout like a bone white). Then do the hardware and select paint LAST. Thank you for the paint tone pictures with your floor - could you retake the shots with the paint samples propped vertically against the wall by the tile floor. Look at all samples as you will see them in real life because the light hits them different so anything vertical (like paint) should be evaluated vertically.

it's not horrible. but I agree, the rough edge should have been done better to blend w/the other piece. I also think they could have done a better job matching up the pieces. 100% they should have informed you where they were going to cut and how the ends would look against one another. Most reputable fabricators will show the client and have them sign off before they cut, just for this reason. you have a lot going in there from what I can see. a very busy backsplash, red/brown cabinets and a blue/gray wall color? and bright white outlets. you can buy colored outlets/plates that would blend in w/the tile. or get the wood one and paint it yourself to match the tile color. when shown against everything else you have happening in that space, the seaming really isn't that noticeable.

You might consider Tropic (Tropical?) Brown. It's darker brown with crystal type flecks for highlight. It's a fairly consistent pattern, nonporous to the point that it almost can't be sealed. It's also fairly common - don't know if that would be a factor for you? We just got it - love the look. It might work well for you as well - ?

Is Tropic brown lighter than Antique brown? I really liked the latter, but don't recall seeing Tropic anywhere.

I don't know - never heard of Antique brown. Tropical Brown looks like, umm, milk chocolate - the overall tone, I mean. It has little flecks of darker brown and black, along with the flecks of crystal..It has no movement to speak of - very consistent pattern. It has no drama, other than simply being there and looking nice! It is readily available, which is partly why it is not a high cost stone (can't remember what cost group it's in)...I think it's called "Tropical Brown", btw - I may have misspoken earlier.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far--keep them coming! I think we're leaning towards the 'brown' granites (versus golden) right now...but will make another trip to the granite yard to look at options in the next week.

If you are looking for consistency, you might want to do the countertop in a solid color countertop (which would leave out grainite with all of its variations). IMO when you have a patterned floor, you will never be happy with a countertop that also has a pattern.

By the way, I think your floor is gorgeousl.

Things are looking great!

If you are willing to consider other colors, look for Costa Smerelda. It is a lighter green with movement. It would go great with linen, dark green and copper. Since it is a different color than the floors, you won't get the clashing you get when the pattern size and color are similar. But, it might be a lot of green.

We have a patterned floor - I guess it'd be considered patterned, anyway. It's a brown toned tile, a bit similar to the floor in the first picture in this thread. Our cabinets are kind of interesting - rustic hickory, which has a fair amount of contrast with the dark toned knots, the lighter straight grained wood, and all. The tropical brown helps to tie it together...I think I would have been afraid of something solid colored - every crumb would be visible! I'm a good housekeeper, but I'm going to obsess enough as it is, keeping that granite perfectly clean!

Maybe I have no sense of design. I don't know. At least nothing in our new kitchen clashes horribly, does it??? :-P
