new cabinets, old oak floors

I have been reading the posts here for awhile and I'm so impressed with the knowledge and excellent taste everyone shares. I'm doing a complete renovation of my 1988 kitchen which has solid oak floors and cabinets. I will definitely keep the floors, but not the cabinets. I don't want white or cream colored cabinets. What are my options for cabinets with golden oak floors? I have not decided on the counter top surface yet. Thanks everyone, Happy New Year!

Seriously? You can put any color you want with light wood floors. Wood is pretty much of a neutral. Like asking what goes with white. I put dark stained maple with my white oak. Painted cabinets go fine. Go with light stained cabinets and refinish the floors with a darker stain for contrast. Can you really think of anything that CANT go with it? I can't off the top of my head.

You're right! Thanks for the information. I'm just starting this project and guess I'm a little nervous about making mistakes.

"Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?" This is tuff to do. When we do a repair in an old Vancouver Home I often use some Shellac first and then top coat with Polyurethane. The shellac gives me the aged look or yellowing and the two seam to work well together. Some times we tint the top coat a little. Judgement calls since sunlight and time will yellow the top coat so making it look right now might make it look wrong in a year.....

Finishing New and Old Oak Floors - SO CONFUSED

We just finished a master bedroom/bath renovation, and as part of it we installed about 300 square feet of new red oak flooring in the bedroom and walk-in closet. We did the installation ourselves, but hired out the sanding and finishing using the Bona dust containment system and Bona Traffic finish (one coat of stain and two coats of satin finish). The flooring has only been finished for a few months, so I can't comment on long-term wear, but I highly recommend the containment system and the waterborn finish. The containment system is a huge shop-vac type vacuum that arrives in its own trailer, and then they ran hoses from the sanding equipment to the trailer. I was in the house that day, and there was very little dust (I vacuumed the room out, but didn't have to completely clean the rest of the house) and the smell was not overwhelming, and completely disappeared in a day or two. We could walk on the floor the next day, and could have moved furniture back in soon after that (but we still had the rest of the project to finish, which just recently happened). ive seen a couple threads from people re: painting their oak cabinets. "snookums" mentioned getting new doors in a paint grade poplar. Im wondering if this can be done but keep the oak front boxes. will the oak grain on the old boxes be very noticible? thanx L.

For me, the bigger issue is that you went with a different width ... Also no need to send to lab. There is an easy testing kit, you just take some wood shavings off the floor and put a few drops on it. Red and white oak react differently to the drops. Did any of the floor specialists do that easy test? That was the first thing our wood floor guy did when we added wood floors to match the existing ones in a 10 year old house. They were red oak and the match was perfect when refinished.

I agree with Sue, some contrast is the way I like it - dark cabinets/medium to light floor or dark stained floor/lighter cabinet. I just remodeled our 1989 kitchen, same as yours honey oak floor and honey oak cabinets. We saved our floor, but got new cabinets. Just posted some pictures in a thread a few minutes ago, you might want to check them out to see if you like the color palette. Good luck and most of all have fun!

As long as you go for a contrast between the floors and the cabinets, you can use anything. I have white oak floors, unstained, with dark stained red oak cabinets. I love the contrast!

I suggest once you pick a cab company bring home samples of different stained cabs and see what works well. I also agree with contrast.

I can think of something that does not go with it sue ct, and that is golden oak cabinets, too. I know because I had that combination. Try to get a wood with a different graining pattern and/or color stain, preferably both.

LOL, your right David, unless you like a monotone look. It would look fine though, as I mentioned, if she just stained the oak floor a little darker to maintain some contrast. That is the nice thing about wood, it is versatile, refinishable, and you can change just about anything about it except the grain, including color and gloss. Someone else posted a while back actually asking what colors went with white cabinets! Just goes to show you how nervous people get about committing to kitchen design decisions. Not only expensive, but it seems so permanent. But eventually you just have to pick something and go for it.
